Bardic Spell Poems

Okay, so it's probably no big surprise that I am Dorky McNerdpants, and thus play D&D once a week with a bunch of friends (and it's house-ruled 2nd edition Dungeons and Dragons, to boot!).

One of my characters is a Celtic-flavored bard by the Name of Daffyd ApOwen, and one quirk I gave him are the fact that along with whatever requirment he has for casting spells, he has to end it with some sort of poem.

So...

Armor: "Gather energies around me/ Magic armor doth surround me."
Burning Hands: "Heart's passion, desert sands/Inner flame brings burning hands."
Color Spray: "From my hands, I shall show/ Wonders of the sky's rainbow!"
Comprehend Languages: "With my touch, words are clear/ Whether I must read or I must here."
Enlarge: "Girth now grows with but a word/Magic can be its own reward/"
Reduce (reversed form of Enlarge): "Larger creature, now ye ken/The diff'rence 'tween mice and men."
Featherfall: "Gentle winds, heed my call!/Gift me with a feather's fall!"
Hypnotism: "Trust in me I suggest/ That you heed my one request."
Light: "Glowing softly, captured day/Sliver o'Sun, light our way."
Magic Missile: "Mage's missile shall do harm/ All in sight should take alarm!"
Message: "Bear my words upon this gust/of wind to whom that i must trust."
Read Magic: "Open my mind that I might see/ Reveal thy secrets unto me."
Sheild Magic: "Magic Missile, do no harm/Mages now should be alarmed!"
Sleep: "Close your eyes and dream deep/Now 'tis time to go to sleep"
Ventriloquism: "Magic's weaves, place my voice/ In a location of my choice."

Now for second level spells, I figured that instead of just doing the rhyming line again, or adding more lines, a spell could just have a one line evocative image, like so:

Blur: "'Tis neither here, nor there/ but everywhere."
Continual Light: "And thus! The Sun opens its unblinking eye!"
Detect Invisible: "Lo! The Weave's hand parts the Unseen's veil!"
Detect Evil: "Hark! Evil's shroud is ripped away!"
Flaming Sphere: "Doom in fire's what I desire!"
Knock: "No matter the lock, my will is the key!"
Leomund's Trap: "Wand'ring fingers, prying eyes/Rogues'll get a nasty surprise!"
Magic Mouth: "Speak when magic deems others should be spoken to."
Melf's Acid Arrow: "Sizzle, bubble, bowstring and trouble!"
Pyrotechnics: "Snake of smoke, coil about me."
Web: "What a tangled Mythal Weave..."

Now, while this character will not be able to cast 8th level spells for quite some time, I figured that the second-highest level of spells in the PLayer's Handbook needed an awesome for to go with it: Haiku!

I only have one written so far, though.

Binding:
"The Mythal weaves ties that bind/
Mine bind further still/
An unbreakable circle."

Ninth level spels are the highest level available in the player's handbook, so what sort of epic form should be used for these spells?

Limericks, DUH!

Wish:
"I'm finally of magickal skill
Enough to bend it to my will.
Of the Mythal I ask
This one humble task:
Make the following wish be fulfilled."

Astral Spell:
"When body and soul're combined,
the complete person's intertwined.
Separate 'em, you're dead,
but with an astral thread,
and this spell, well, you're totally fine."

I'm preparing this adventure where the party in my group are going to this ancient, abandoned temple to the god of fire. It's in a volcano, in fact. Has anyone ever run a game in such an environment? Any advice on it? Like...how much damage would lava do? Would it cause heat damage if you were too close to it? Maybe suffocation rules if the air is full or ash?

Any experience in DMing or playing in such an environment would be greatly appreciated, whether it's advice on rules or suggestions for cool ideas to implement to make the game more exciting. Thanks.

When I first started looking into online gaming I had a really hard time finding places that actually had games going on. There were a few places that liked to talk about gaming but I wanted to play.

Shameless plug/

I have a game board called Castle Valiant

I started it after a couple of the game boards I frequented were having trouble staying up and running. All the games were on hold and some of them died off. I also wanted to provide a place to host games so people had other options available to them if they couldn't scare up a face-to-face game in their area or if some other board goes down or gets hacked games could still be played. So, Castle Valiant was created.

It's all about the games. Play by email (PBEM), Play by message board (PBMB). The game pacing is slower than table top but it has the advantage of giving you the time to craft your responses or plots.

AD&D, D&D, D20, Planescape, White Wolf, Star Wars, Birthright or something else are all welcome. I'm a 1st and 2nd edition AD&D fan myself.

Join up and help launch Castle Valiant. Start your games today. Don't be shy, come on in. Joining is free, playing is free, no subscription fees, no charges and no credit checks.
It's a new board and more members will offer more opportunities.
Newbies and old timers are welcome.

/Shameless plug

Howdy from Texas.
I have been a AD&D player for many years, and my family are players as well. Our games are hosted saturday nights at my home, usually with a pot-luck.
We have 3 current house DM's. Myself, and my Mama G being the two main and 3 DM's in training. One being my step daughter.
This last weekened was our Olivian campaign which found the Furyans tracking a necromancer back to his keep. Then laying a small seige against it with frontal assult. The game went well, no pc deaths but the battle was blood and mudy due to a 'rock to mud' spell.
The best role play quote of the game....from the Furyan capt Harvester to the furyan shamaness Alya. "I've smelled pretty from the day you started traveling with us. I want it for the rest of my life." as close to a Furyan pick up line if I ever heard one.

speaking of

The Furyan
An adaptation to AD&D
By Kenneth Haun
Genocide. It’s a word used to inspire fear, revulsion, and respect in over a hundred languages. Talked about and it causes revulsion. Threatened and it will cause fear. Perform it and you earn the respect of worlds.
But Genocide isn’t clean, and by ‘clean’ imperfect, and like any work of art an imperfection can kill.
The Furyans where a race that never spoke or threatened Genocide on any race, but don’t be mislead they where not peaceful in any way. Ultimately they where victims of Genocide.
The History of Furya is one filled with strife and conflict. A beautiful jewel of a world on which lived and traveled a race seemed breed and born for conflict. Their society was egalitarian, with individuals and families banding together to manage both political and judiciary descions. They had no set government, military or guardians. They needed none. Furyans where born with the natural instincts to fight and survive! A young Furyan had all the instinctual knowledge and physical skill to defend him or herself from vicious animals to armed orcs. They where a hardy, strong and defiant people, but they also carried a rich culture. Men and woman shared many of the same duties from labor in he fields, food preparation, teaching and the care of young. There was no ‘coming of age’ ceremony or challenge for a young Furyan. The day you carried a weapon was the day you where an adult. Ultimately it may have been these instincts that doomed the world of Furya. For centuries they lived, wandering the land of their world, growing, fighting, and dying. Giving thanks only to the earth they walked, family, friends and most importantly their own strength. Both strength of arms and will. When the race reached a certain point in their history and grew to the first time large enough to build a city, their strength drew the attention of primordial gods. There is no mention to how it happened, but what is known by some rare scholars is that the Furyans rejected whatever deity tried to claim them. How this happened is uncertain, many suspect a spell jamming group made contact and tried to force their beliefs to the Furyan people. The attempt went badly, and the result was suddenly catastrophic. The world became a tapestry of war and bloodshed. Across the globe portals to the negative plane opened and undead poured forth like ants. This host of hungry evil covered the globe in a matter of days, reducing the world to a graveyard.
The Furyans never surrendered though; stop the slaughter with a single prayer. They where defiant to the end. But Genocide is never clean, and mistakes often happen. Or in this case a hand moves to hide or shield, not all deities demand to be called a name. It was one such power that hid small pockets of Furyans’ deep within the earth in suspended animation till the undead scourge had passed. Still others had been smuggled off world, as slaves or slated for the gladiatorial arenas of far off worlds. Those few watched, weeping in their minds, but dried eyed as their world darkened and turned gray with ash. Years later those few hidden deep underground awoke and journeyed to the surface only to discover a landscape of graves and skeletal corpses. It took time but eventually most of them left their world, all but a select few, following their instincts to survive.
The typical Furyan wears dark, utilitarian clothing, and though has no qualms wearing more fashionable or colorful decoration will rarely do so. Or only for short times. Hair color ranges from dark brown, black, stone gray, deep red or bright red. Eye coloration ranges from Hazel, brown, green, blue, light red and crimson. Most are of average human height and weight. Furyans have longer life spans than some;
Starting Age Maximum Age Range
Base Age Variable (Base+Variable)
15 1d6 125+3d20
Furyan characters gain a +1 to strength at character creation, and gain a +1 to total hit points per level. Also the Furyan gains a +1 to hit bonus with a weapon of choice. (swords, daggers, maces, ect..). They also gain a +1 to saving throws versus Heat, cold and poisons. When the Furyan is alone and is not wearing metal armor, he gains a bonus to surprise opponents. The opponent suffers a –4 penalty, a –2 if the Furyan has to open a door or other such activity.
Furyan pcs must be either true neutral or neutral good, in some rare cases they may also be Lawful neutral. They may Multi-class for 2 classes only tending towards fighter/thief combos. Furyans may not be Paladins or clerics/druids, though they maybe Shamans. They have a base movement of 12, and the normal human detect noise 10%. Furyans however make better use of their olfactory senses than most and gain a +1 to surprise rolls where attackers may have an obvious odor.
For their strengths the Furyans have some strong flaws, one of which being their belief system. A Furyan bows to no one, only 2-3 exceptions maybe made ever in a character career. This causes a –3 to Nobility reaction checks of other races.
Because of their ‘lack of faith’ or refusal to accept ‘divinity’ they, like some races with Uncontrolled Magic Resistance roll a save against any healing/ helpful clerical spell over 3rd level. If the save succeeds the spell affects the Furyan as normal as for the moment they accept the aid of the divine. Failure means the spell has no effect. The exception to this is a Shamans healing, as it comes from accestrial spirits, which the Furyan does believe in. This disadvantage also extends to clerical magical items, or other ‘holy’ magical items and even holy water/oil.
The Furyans have a natural racial enemy and hatred of that foe. This hatred is born from the emotional death cry for vengance of their race. A Furyan who sees and undead, from zombie to vampire must attack that target as soon as possible. This urge is so powerful that it requires a save versus paralysis to resist. This can cause some large tactical issues during combat as Furyans will ‘break ranks’ to attack that target.
Furyans also share one disadvantage of dwarves. They tend to carry a grudge. A Furyan will actively seek out and confront an individual or group which has wronged either himself or people. This can once again lead to certain ‘tactical’ errors. Example being walking into enemy territory to confront the killer of a friend. Unlike dwarves who can often see the ‘big picture’ of this action the Furyan can tend to be abit more narrow minded. (Though a wisdom check maybe made to ‘rethink’ the action.)
Furyans may not take the following disadvantages; fanatacism, irritating personality or any phobia.
Furyans loose –10% of all experience gained.

BB and happy gaming

Ok, i have an interesting dilema. One of my players is a Cavalier, he is actually based on the 1st edition Cavalier, from Unearthed Arcana, however for the purposes of this query he follows the same rules as the 2nd Ed one from the fighters handbook. A couple of games back the group came under attack from a large group of manscorpians, outnumbered and the other two fighters down the Cavalier holds the doorway on his own, as he begins to lose ground and take wounds he slams the door and holds it shut. Now according to the rules for his class he is not allowed to run from a fight, however the player has since justified his actions, claiming that running from the fight was the best way to save the rest of the group who he feels he is responsible for... what do you guys recon? Should he have been penalised for his actions or even rewarded?

Often it will say go to monster manual page such and such.

Phase one is complete, I have gone thorough the main monster listings in the 3.5 monster manual and page by page then noted the page number in the 2nd ed monster manual where the same monster exists.

Phase two is typing this bit up.

Phase three is filling in the gaps that are left where there is not an identical monster, either by finding something very similar that goes by another name or by doing a direct backwards conversion.

Greetings all,

Just happened to scroll through the listings of communities and this one caught my eye.

It's been much too long since I've gamed, but I've been pretty active on the game system design end of the spectrum as of late. I've been a DM for over 16 years now and an avid fan of table top RPGing for pretty much as long. My first exposure to the genre was with the original D&D game back in 1990, after which I moved into AD&D 2nd ed. in 1991. It's been a pretty wonderful love-affair since.

I've written a number of expansion rules sets for the 2nd ed. for my groups over the years. They've collectively become known as "The House Rules" or the "2.5 edition." We all had a good laugh when 3rd ed. came out...

But, anyway, thought I'd introduce myself.

Have a great day and pleasure meeting you.

The question however i have is did second edition ever publish stronghold building rules and prices? I obviously have the first edition dmg which lists the prices for a piecemeal castle and i have the castle guide winging its way to me from the beloved ebay (may arrive tomorrow) however i thought i would ask if anyone knows where abouts such rules may be found? (I probably have the book but cant remember reading such rules.) Thanks in advance guys.

Hi. I was pretty stoked to see that AD&D is still a thriving property someplace. I've got a little of the 3E stuff, but I'm not nearly as enamored with it as a lot of folks, for a host of reasons. I don't think it's a bad system, necessarily, but in the 25 years I've DM'ed ( I was only a player on three occasions in that time ), I guess I've gotten so used to 'old school' that I'm reluctant to fork over more money to keep up with the new edition.

Anyways, I tend to be pretty reserved when it comes to dialoguing online, which is why my journal is written in roman a'clef. But I figured I ought to introduce myself, at least, and see if I can learn a thing or two or maybe put in my two cents worth now and again.

Cheers.

Hi everyone. I'm new to this group, although certainly not new to AD&D 2nd edition. I DM a world of my own creation, and I wanted to get some outside opinions on a couple issues that have arisen in the course of the game.

1. One of my players wants to retire his elf bladesinger character and replace it with a fighter/mage/thief, using the Sha'ir kit (from Al-Qadim) for the mage class. I never even heard of the Sha'ir kit until he brought it up to me, so I wanted to look at their abilities before I approved of it. After looking it over, I decided to let him have it, although I still have some concerns about how it will affect gameplay. My biggest concern is that (if I did the calculations correctly) an 8th level sha'ir could have access to 8th level wizard spells, which an ordinary wizard would not be able to get until 16th level! My friend pointed out that while this is true, there are a lot of restrictions to balance that out, including: being required see the spell first before he can request it, the low chance of receiving a higher level spell, the long period of time needed to obtain it, and the short period of time in which he would have to use it. I'm hoping that these restrictions are enough to balance out their ability to obtain an incredibly wide selection of spells without memorization. Has anyone else played with a sha'ir in their campaign, and if so, how did it affect your game? Did they seem too powerful to you?

2. My players and I have disagreed before about how the thief ability to hide in shadows works. In the 2nd edition players handbook, it says: "A thief can hide this way only when no one is looking at him; he remains hidden only as long as he remains virtually motionless....The DM rolls the dice and keeps the result secret, but the thief always thinks he is hidden." My players have interpretted that to mean that while the thief himself/herself does not know if the hide in shadows attempt succeeded, the other characters can look at the thief and tell him/her if it's working, thus allowing the thief to keep rolling again until successful. I think this is wrong because simply knowing that the thief is there trying to hide in shadows would make the other characters unable to judge how obvious it would be to someone who did not know. And, it terms of game balance, it makes the thief ability somewhat meaningless since the thief can simply try again and again until successful. What do the rest of you think?

Hi everyone!

So i am fairly new to DnD, and really new to DM'ing. But my friend who got me into DnD wanted me to try my hand at DM'ing.

My campaign right now has 2 PC's. My friend who has been playing twice as long as i have, and another friend who just started playing about a week ago. So i feel a somewhat unbalanced campaign on the horizon. The real problem is that my experienced friend, i feel, is taking advantage of my good nature, questioning every decision i make, asking for all this stuff and then justifying it because of his history.

whereas, my friend who just started is completely ok with have a rather mediocre character to start off with and is just trying to get his bearings.
I have recently read in the DMG that there are several different kinds of players, those that RP to RP and those that RP to win. They don't care so much about the RP as they do about "Winning" and being "powerful"
I am becoming increasingly frustrated with how my experienced friend keeps dealing with this character and I am almost ready to scrap the character and the campaign and start new.

Any ideas? Should i start a new campaign? if so how should i start it so that both characters are balanced? If you think i should continue how should i make this more balanced so that everyone can be content with the results?

- A confused DM

Recently in my current campaign, one of my players came across their long lost sister--and realized, to her horror, that the sister is one of the main agents of the Big Bad.

Ever had this happen to your own character? It's actually something I've done before--in a previous campaign, we had this guy run into his long lost brother, who was on the side of evil.

It can be fun (if not overdone), because it creates a dilemma. You can't just kill your own sibling--or can you?

The first such incident occured in a naval game. The PC in question was a swashbuckler type. His older step-brother was a mage who ran into some pirates and lost his hand, as a result. He then disappeared.

The swashbuckler found out his brother had replaced his hand with a poisoned claw and was calling himself "The Wyvern." He had teamed up with a young pirate lass who was hoping to one day become the next big threat on the seas. The two brothers had a dramatic fight, in which the PC won and took the mage prisoner. They then began the long process of trying to reform him--not an easy task, when the captain (another PC) was only interested in bringing him in and seeing him hang from the gallows.

The current incident is as follows: The party is a group of good rebels fighting off an evil empire. They were assigned to take out the five "Agents" of the local Overlord. It turns out that one of these Agents is in fact the party mage's sister, who supposedly killed their parents and ran off years ago.

The party mage wants nothing more to reform her, but time will tell if that will be possible or not. Next session we have, I guess we'll find out.

So what about you guys? Have any tales about your character running into a long, lost evil sibling? Was the sib slain, or reformed?

Do tell.

Hey all i just joined this community thingy a little bit ago. I mainly joined because I have been playing/role playing 2 edition D&D for going on 3 years now. My Friend got me interested in it when we met at work. I found out he has been DMing off and on with his other friends for quite a long time. Long enough where he had created 2 worlds on his own. One world they went through an end of the world campaign and destroyed it in an epic battle. But I digress.
So we started gaming with a small group him me and another couple of friends of ours at his apartment. I created my very first character, a halfelf ninga-ranger. (yeah yeah i may not be allowed in some campaigns but o well) anyway He turned out to be my all time favorite character, sure I have created numerous ones since him but he was by far the best.

Last night while gaming He ended up dying in an epic battle for what he believed in. I had just gotten him to level 10/10. He was on a quest to bring back his god who had been killed by the god of death 2 years ealier. On his quest to bring the god back he had to do a favor for a phonix in order to have the gods mortal body ressurected. Upon having the mortal body ressurected I came upon the problem of convincing him that he in fact was the god of justice, and that he had died some 1200 years ago. It took me a while but I finally had him convinced and was about to give him his power back to him when BAM the god of death shows up again with his High priest(one of my old traveling compainions) and another High priest of another god who used to follow my god of justice.

There was no way in hell i was going to allow them to kill him again without kiling me first so I started out the battle with a lightning bolt to the second priest taking half his hit point with that shot. Then the high priest of death gets behind me somehow and teleports me as high as possible somewhere up in the stratesphere, lucky for me I had a ring of feather fall other wise I would have died right then and there.
The guy I had just gotten ressurected ended up taking out the priest I had wounded in the first place which left the priest of death and him.
Well he put up a good fight but ended up getting killed. Right about then I got teleported back to the chamber. In one of the best battles I have been a part of in the whole time of gaming me character and the priest of death faced off he rolled a critical and another hit on me I was lucky enough to block the critical, unfortunatly it ended up breaking my godly weapon which in turn blew up the weapon and the so wicked crystals above us. All in all the explosion vaparized me, the high priest of death and 5 square miles of land in all directions from us.

All in all even if I didnt succeed in bringing back the god of justice at least I didnt go out without taking the other guy with me lol

Great times role playing
