Writer's Block: I Love Lucy [15 Oct 2008|10:47pm]

ashlite
[ music | Family Guy ]

I Love Lucy premiered today in 1951, and has been on the air ever since. Although Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s marriage didn’t last off the air, Lucy and Ricky are one of the great couples in television history. Who is your favorite TV couple?

View other answers

Okay, instead of simply bringing my embarrassing anime and relationshipping obsessions into this, I choose the two couples from the two TV shows that started those obsessions in the first place.

First runner up: The canon couple Serena and Darien from Sailor Moon (well, I'll only count them as my favourite couple for the first two seasons), the show that brought me to anime.  I loved those two and the way their relationship developed in the first season.  The episode that still stands out the most for me is the one in which they revealed their identities to each other*.  (And yeah, Uranus and Neptune were cooler as a canon couple and they were also very important and influential to me, but I didn't actually see them on TV until years later, so.)

But the real winner is non-canon: Tai and Matt from Digimon!!!!!  I consider that pairing my first love. <333333  That show got me hooked on shipping and fandom in general, namely yaoi and yuri--and there's a whole story behind it that I've been wanting to write out almost since the time it happened, which I'm still saving for another time.

Ahh, sweet nostalgia.  Those old days made me.  By the way, I'm purposefully using the dub names because that's what I watched.

Honourable mention goes to Cosmo and Wanda from Fairly Odd Parents.

*I still remember the song that played at the sad moment at the end of the episode, one of the many great insert songs on the cassette I still own:

There will come a day
Someday far away
In your arms I'll stay
My only love
You've reached the deepest part.
Of the secret in my heart
I've known it from the start
My only love

I could go on about how great the DiC dub was compared to other Americanized dubs nowadays, but I've already rambled too much. ^^;;;;;;

Graduate Information Session at Simmons....... [15 Oct 2008|08:59pm]

I have a lot to think about tonight. I went to a graduate information session at Simmons College. I wound up getting slightly lost. I walked around Wheelock College and the Longwood Medical area for at least twenty minutes, trying not to panic as I tried to figure out where the hell I was and where I had to go. I finally found a Wheelock College campus map, and figured out where I had to go from there. Thank the universe for campus maps! I finally found the Simmons College campus after another roughly ten minutes of walking, and found the right building straight off.

The woman who spoke to those of us interested in the Children’s Literature program is the Director of the graduate program in Children’s Literature and an Associate Dean of the Simmons College of Arts and Sciences. She is also an associate professor of English. Her name is Cathryn Mercier, and from the sound of things, she will also be one of my professors if I get into the program.

Applying to graduate school is a Big Decision. Professor Johnson got back to me earlier this evening, and he agreed to write me a recommendation for Emerson College, which makes me happy. ^_^ So that takes care of my final recommendation form for Emerson.

*sigh*

All I can say is that I will be absolutely thrilled when the presidential election is over and done with. :-/ I can't believe that there are only 20 (twenty) days left before the election.

tip for the mid-week! [14 Oct 2008|12:40pm]

a suggestion came from the tip for the week that I steal them from viz as a tip for the week, but do my own as tip for the mid-week. so here goes...

Tip for the Mid-week!

blokes who can't be arsed to tidy their bedrooms but still want to get laid!
go out and find yourself an art student, when she gets back to your pad and sees your love nest she'll instantly be impressed at the artistic mess you have made and assume it's some kind of statement. she'll probably suggest you try for the turner prize, strip naked and ravage you on the spot and finally ask for a cup with mold growing in it to take home to place in her living room as 'conversational piece'!

trying to think of something this morning has been hard work, everything I could think of involved sex.....typical bloke I guess :op

For some reason I thought that the last presidential debate was tomorrow night. Instead, it is tonight at 9pm. :) I shall be watching.

In related news, I am officially registered to vote in Massachusetts. I received my paper confirmation in the mail yesterday from the Boston Election Department. This makes me happy. :)

Books meme [15 Oct 2008|10:51am]

blur_kiwi

Again stolen shamelessly, this time from[info]meathiel , to whom I am very grateful.

Hardback or paperback?
Usually paperback, though there are some books I just have to buy as soon as they come out, so that makes them hardback.

Amazon or bookshop?
Both. Amazon is really good for getting things that aren't easy to find in the shops, but I love bookshops and find it very difficult to resist.

Bookmark or dog-ear?
Bookmark always

Keep, throw away or sell?
Keep. My bookshelves are overburdened and groaning but I can't really ever part with any of them.

Keep bookjacket or throw it away?
Keep it, it's part of the book.

Read with bookjacket or without?
Read with bookjacket. I know that some people have a problem with them, but I don't, so I keep them on where they belong.

Short story or novel?
Novel, short story, travelogue, biography - bring it on.

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Harry Potter. I've never read any of the Lemony Snicket books, perhaps I should.

Stop reading when you're tired or after finishing a chapter?
Usually when I'm tired.

“The night was cold and stormy” or “Once upon a time”?
"The night was cold and stormy" but sometimes “Once upon a time” is also good.

Buy or borrow?
Buy

New or used?
New, though sometimes there are books I can only get second-hand.

Deciding what you buy: bestseller list, reviews, recommendations...?
It's usually when a new book comes out by an author I read regularly. I don't tend to go by reviews because I rarely agree with the people who write them. Recommendations work well too, and it's always great to receive a book as a gift.

Closed end or Cliffhanger?
It really doesn't matter.

Do you read in the morning, at noon or at night?
At night and in the bath, normally. It's when I have most time to read.

Odd volume or series?
I can do both quite happily.

Fave series?
I love Terry Pratchett's discworld novels, and his other stuff as well come to that.

Fave book of the ones you read last year?
I think my favourite from the past year has to be Nation by Terry Pratchett. It says a lot of the things I think.

What book are you currently reading?
'Boudica' by Vanessa Collingridge...and...'Pies and Prejudice' by Stuart Maconie. (Yes, I'm one of those people!)

Fave book of all time?
I think, if I was shoved up against a wall and asked that question, I would probably say 'The Lord of the Rings' (I read it just about every year) but there are so many more I would like to include that, perhaps, I don't really have a real favourite.

Fave authors?
JRR Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, Tim Moore, Edgar Allen Poe, Tony Hawks, Stephen Fry, Spike Milligan, Joe Bennett.

Pandemonium owns my soul......... [14 Oct 2008|11:16pm]

callmetothejedi
[ mood | calm ]

The time tonight at the workshop just flew by! It did not seem like we were there for two hours, even though we were. Craig spent a few minutes at the beginning of class talking about how to Develop Ideas Into Stories, and then we jumped into critiquing the pieces that we all to submit for this class. We only got through five of them (out of a total of twelve), so we will have plenty to talk about next time. I was thinking about skipping next week's workshop so that I could go to an orientation session for Rosie's Place, but I am not going to now because we didn't get to discuss my superpower piece tonight in class, and I really want to hear what everyone else has to say about what I wrote. We also have another short assignment due next week, and I already have ideas for what I want to write about.

In any event, Rosie's Place will be holding another orientation session in November and one in December, so I have two more chances to start volunteering there before 2008 ends. I just hope that I also have a full time job by the time this year ends.

Tomorrow, I am meeting Ben at 8am for a workout, and then I have an interview at Boylston Staffing at 2pm, and then I am going to a graduate open house at Simmons at 5:30pm.

So that's my Wednesday in a nutshell. I don't have definite plans for Thursday or Friday yet (wish that I did), but on Saturday I will be spending the day at the Reading Public Library in Reading, MA getting all oriented to be a volunteer with Horizons for Homeless Children.

I took the cat to the vet today. Everyone marvled about how I bought her in on a leash and she sat politely and calmly next to me, without any issue at all. "Oh, she's so calm", several people said. Yes, that's my cat. Some dogs came over to sniff her and all she did was hiss when one got in her face too far. She did a lot of peering around, and it was clear she was unsure where she was and what was up, but she was really incredibly behaved.

At the end of the appointment, she got some anti-biotics and on the bottle they wrote "Squeek".

...

I'm sorry, but "squeak" has never been spelled with two Es. It's not in the dictionary with two Es, and I'm not sure why they assumed it was two Es, either. This assumes me.
