using new media in your job search
I wanted to share an article I recently read on TalentZoo titled Heads up Grads by Paul Marobella, managing director of Wirestone Chicago. In this article, Marobella outlines “5 ideas that can help college graduates in this recession.” 1.) If you don’t have the desired work experience, leverage what you know. If this means talking about the hours a day you spend on Facebook, go for it. Companies are looking to expand into social networking and they will need Facebook savvy employees. 2.) Utilize the social networks you belong too and join the ones you don’t. Use sites like LinkedIn to expand your network, but do it with a purpose. Don’t just add someone and expect to get a job, ask to set up informational interviews – if they want to help you, they will. 3.) Get well read and conversant on the top industry trends. Marobella recommends creating a Google Reader and subscribing to top industry blogs to stay abreast on trends. Also take this time to read academic books on your career field, it will give you something meaningful to discuss in interviews. 4.) Incorporate social media into your job search. Marobella recommends creating a Social Media Resume. I personally have adopted this technique and created a personal YouTube Channel to share video cover letters and work I’ve done. While I wish I could say this helped me land the job of my dreams, I can say that the feedback I have received has been overwhelmingly positive. It is a definite opportunity to differentiate yourself from the rest of the applicant pool. 5.) Blog it out. Chris Perry, MBA 2009, just wrote about the benefits of blogging in Brand building for Mason and for you. Marobella would agree with Chris. Blogging about your career field is a way for recruiters and managers to see your passion and writing skills. You can’t expect recruiters to read every article you write, but with the right promotion in your cover letters, they will be able to see this passion through a quick skim. No doubt the environment we are faced with calls for a little creativity and a lot of resilience. But taking some of this advice could help you stand out from the rest of the MBA’s from those, “other schools”. Happy hunting. JSE | | Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 | 5:11 pm [prosiac_je]

Breaking into Planning
Hello. I'm new to the community and wanted to introduce myself. I'm a newly minted MBA from the College of William and Mary pursuing a career in Strategic Planning. Apparently, there is a recession and ad agencies have been cutting back??? Who knew. But I would love to hear if anyone has any thoughts about the best way to break into the ad world in this current environment. I found an interesting article today on TalentZoo.com titled - Heads Up Grads and was happy to see that I was on par with his suggestions. One thing I have been using is YouTube for creating and managing my own brand ( My YouTube Channel) I am also looking to build and expand my network so if you are an account planner and willing to chat for 10-15 minutes send me a message, I would love to talk with you. Please, feel free to add and follow me on LJ or any other social network sites: LiveJournalTwitterLinkedIn YouTube I would love to hear any and all advice. Thanks and look forward to interacting with everyone in the future. jse Current Music: Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars | | Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 | 11:55 am [kfpoore]

Looking for Freelance Web Developers
The company I work for is currently looking to redo its website. Unfortunately, I'm not too super keen on web development. I am looking to work with a web developer to redo our site. I'm looking for either a freelancer or an [online] interactive agency (specializing in only that, nothing else). If any of you have dealt with someone that you would recommend (ethically and creatively), please let me know.Personally, I'm looking for someone who can do professional development on wordpress cms (who can customize the shell, not just design templates). Below are two examples. Brains on Fire PrincipalsWe will more than likely create the design. We just need someone to implement and provide usability feedback. You can reply here or email me at kris[at]idgroup.us Thanks! | | Monday, February 2nd, 2009 | 9:33 am [ideasmith]

Super bowl ads sucked this year... only one was good, because only one I could relate to. there was too much CGI, too many that left me thinking "huh" and too many that just were dumb. Here is an example of the only one I actually enjoyed | | Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 | 3:28 pm [worldbimperial]

Entry level agency job hunting in NYC
Howdy, all. I'm looking for an entry level position in brand marketing, traffic or whatever else can get my foot in the door at an agency. I prefer account to creative, but will happily work both, including paid and unpaid internships. So, I ask all of you - (1) Aside from trolling Craiglist, is signing up at the web pages of the various new york majors really worth it? Temp agencies, etc? What is the most time effective and gets the most bang for the buck? (2) I went to school for an MBA in media management while continuing with my bank operations job, and am just completing my first internship. Is the MBA intimidating to those who hire, thinking that I may demand more than a typical entry level? I usually try to make clear in my cover letters that I'm looking for an entry level position and that commiserate pay is fine, I'm just looking for that elusive "2 years agency experience" that all the jobs seem to want. I really want to work in brand marketing and strategy. (3) Are there any free resources where I can post up PDFs of adobe work I've done? I'd rather not have to pay for or go through the hassle of setting up my own site (hello dreamweaver!) It doesn't seem that Photobucket or Flickr will take uploads of anything except JPGs and related formats, and I'd like to be able to throw up at least PDFs. (4) Does age discrimination play a factor? I'm switching careers and 41. Are they looking for fresh scrubbed 20 somethings, or am I being paranoid? (5) Are there any agencies or firms that deal with MBAs who focus on media or marketing? An MBA recruitment firm that deals with MBAs whom want to have a career in marketing would be ideal. Thanks, any commentary appreciated. CB | | Friday, June 27th, 2008 | 4:36 pm [art_huiart]

sexy greenwash in new mainstreamed corporate ads you watch a rather foxy and very persuasive french scientist lady tell you how exxon mobil are at the forefront of alternative energy research. when actually they just bought up the ideas and are keeping them well under wraps. at $130 for a barrel of oil they'd be letting down their shareholders if they did anything else. money certainly does talk. Best logo? I know we do more then just talk about TV spots, advertisement is branding... (Excerpt from a guy named David Airey) When it comes to seeing a logo that makes you wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that?”, what exactly is it about the design that gives you that impression? There are four critical elements that can be seen in every great logo design: 1. It must be describable 2. It must be memorable 3. It must be effective without colour 4. It must be scalable i.e. effective when just an inch in size So what logos have you seen that make you go, Hmmm that is good. I like the Northwest Airlines logo. If you look at it there is an N, an implied W, and its Arrow faces Northwest, Brilliant! I'll admit it, I didn't watch the Superbowl. Anything interesting that went on there could be found within minutes on the internet. Joining in the effort to garner a little more community involvement: This one actually aired during the 'bowl. I like commercials that make me stop and go "what the %#$&? rewind that!" I couldn't find Youtube links, but there's also a new Axe commercial where a young guy is in his apt. alone, when suddenly! his girl throws a shoe up to his window to get him to let her into his apartment building. Realizing he hasn't showered and isn't springtime fresh, he uses Axe body spray, and then proceeds to SLAM his face against the tiled bathroom wall, effectively "cracking" the funk off himself. But the time his lady makes it upstairs, he's managed to peel off the stank and is at the top of his scent game. | 10:59 am [ideasmith]

Super Bowl has come and gone, and yet this community has remained silent. This was our chance to have our voices heard. Lets sound off, lets make some noise. I saw a commercial the other day... horrible. It tried too hard to be all of the following adjectives; funny, cool, outhere, hip, outrages. it was however just gross. Whats your take on it. | | Friday, February 1st, 2008 | 8:19 am [philmosophy]

Please Join Me
Hey everyone. I am currently in a philosophy & film class. I created this live-journal account so that I can create an on-going project documenting what I learn, my observations, and other such things. It can get pretty interesting. I'll go into topics such as art, philosophy, propaganda, mass consumerism, films, photography, self-identity, and a lot of other stuff. I would love for all of you to contribute, as well. Add me as a friend and I'll add you back. I might add a few of you now. I want to know what you guys have to say about my thoughts on my journal. You can disagree, you can hate me, think I'm delusional, contradict me, find contradictions in what I say, agree with me, anything. Anything would be great. Please consider it. Thanks a lot. | | Thursday, January 31st, 2008 | 8:17 pm [princess_raa]

Magazine writers!
Good evening, How are you? I need your talents! Me and a friend have a vision: to start up a fashion magazine for young, intelligent woman. Are you sick of all those celeb mags with skinny Brigette-Bardot-on-crack looking LA celebs and giving you tips on how to get back your cheating man etc etc...we want a mag for intelligent, confident, ambitious women...who wouldn't want that chetaing man back!! It is targeted for a multi-cultural audience, and we want fashion news from different cities around the world, like Moscow, Tokyo, Dubai, Jamaica, Zimbabwe, Mumbai, London etc... Do any of you think you could contribute about any cities' style?...or about relationships...politics? - basically issues that affect the real women of today If you think you could contribute in any way to this monthly magazine I would greatly appreciate it It would be great to hear from you Many thanks in advance, Peaches Saira | 11:50 am [coridan]

Looking for NYC area pro bono opportunities
I'm going to school at the NYU SCPS for a cert in marketing, and I want to get hands on experience in marketing and advertising campaign creation. As such, I am willing to work for free in order to get some good stuff under my belt. Can any of you folks direct me to a clearing house site of NYC charities? I'd love to work on ad copy, strategy and other aspects of a marketing campaign for a good cause pro bono. Cross posted to new_yorkersThanks, CB | | Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 | 10:24 pm [recrea33]

mystery buyers hmmnn. i wonder. do we take their word for it? the words cabal vs cartel spring to mind. hey, these are multi billion dollar outfits after all. i'm not sure which scenario is more depressing? like a nice family settling in to watch chicken runwhilst enjoying a i'm afraid i'm tempted to believe the latter. we didn't win the war to have someone tell us we can't eat sadly farmed chicken. they were probably watching the < a href="comedy on the other side. anyway. hugh fearnly whittingstall in tears after actually setting up his own, highly sanitized, broiler chicken shed (because, unsurprisingly, no real world chicken farm would let cameras anyway near their operations.) sat somewhat uncomfortably. and of course the unsufferably chirpy jamie oliver didn't help much knocking out a couple of quick tasty recipes for deep fried mrm balls whilst promoting the supermarkets 'slightly more than dirt cheap' chickens. he was trying to strike a happy medium i guess. as, i also guess, did the faintly socialist statements of asda and tesco reserving their right to provide the poor people with cheap meat. i'm guilty of hypocracy myself buying eggs (albeit free range organic) when the male chicks still go on the big conveyor belt to gasdom. and dairy. similar thing. eggs i can give up. dairy is a little more difficult. that makes me half the vegetarian. and twice the catfood. sharks vs whales? elephants vs lions killer whales vs humpback whales, the killer instinct... discuss. coconut milk perhaps? could possibly work? ha! vindication! pyrhhic victory is mine! nearly 2 1/2 years after i complained about this ocd inducing ad, it's finally been pulled. (after it had come to the end of its run) --------------------------------------- 'everyone knows the pseudo science claims in shampoo or anti aging creams are stupid, but this disinfectant ad really made me mr. angry from tonbridge wells:
'FACT: there are 68 more times more bacteria on your babies high chair than on your floor.'
this statement is misleading at best and purely false at worse. where is the source? panicking new mothers into being obsessively over protective is at best irresponsible and at worse downright dangerous.
yours sincerely, stuart harris'

Dear Mr Harris,
Your complaint about Dettol Disinfectant Spray Fact
Thank you for contacting us. I am sorry this advertising has caused you concern.
I should explain that the themes of advertisements are chosen by the advertisers. What we require of the broadcasters is that they ensure that the advertising they carry complies with our Advertising Code. Technical claims of this kind are checked by the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC) who are employed by broadcasters to ensure the compliance of advertising with our Code. As the statistics and facts in this advertising would have been verified by the BACC before the advert was broadcast we have no reason to doubt the veracity of the claims.
Thank you, nonetheless, for taking the trouble to raise this matter. Even when we are not taking action, it is very helpful to be aware of individual viewers’ reactions to television advertising.
Yours sincerely,
Barry Noone Broadcast Complaints Handler'
