Casting Call Jul. 18th, 2008 @ 12:01 pm
[info]vampire_kitten
I am involved in putting on a performance of Mort at the Edinburgh Fringe, but one of the actors has dropped out at very short notice. I.e. this morning. Part is that of Goodie Whelper and other minor female parts. The show is going to be fabulous, on the top floor of C Main. Paul Kidby is donating his artwork for the posters, and a large chunk of money going to charity. Everyone involved with the production will have C passes, allowing them free tickets at C shows, for the duration of the festival.

We are urgently seeking someone who is

1) Female, youngish,
2) Available in Oxford a.s.a.p
3) Available in Edinburgh 25th July -> 25th August
4) Can act
5) Preferably can pay towards accomodation ~ £500 for the month, or sort their own. If you can't do this, still get in touch as the production may decide to cover cost of accomodation in order to y'know have a show.

Any recommendations of a good reference book for beginning actors/actresses? Jul. 3rd, 2008 @ 01:53 am
[info]enduring_spirit
I hope this is an appropriate post for this community. If it is not, please feel free to delete it.

I am looking for recommendations for a good, general reference book for beginning actors and actress. I have not done much acting, only a few small roles in school plays and community theatre; most of my background is in film making, scriptwriting, and set designs. And those activities are hobbies at most. My actual profession has nothing to do with the performing or visual arts. But I have become more interested in acting lately, especially given my hobbies.

While I know the best way to develop one’s acting skills is to take classes (or at least that is what I have heard), I don’t have the time or resources to make such a commitment yet. In the meantime, however, I would like to read up on and study basic techniques and other such things, so that if and when I am ready to take classes, I will be better prepared.

I hope this post makes sense, and thanks in advance for any suggestions! Take care.

Familiar with "Out of the Frying Pan" by Francis Swann??

I'm a fairly unexperienced actor and I was recently cast in "Out of the Frying Pan", a three act comedy by Francis Swann. I was cast as the cooky landlady Mrs. Garnet & truly have no idea what angle to go at the role from. I've never played a real comedic role. And even though this part is a minor role, I'd still prefer to go into the role with a good idea of how I want to play her.
So what I'm asking is that if anyone is familiar with the play and has any tips, or if anyone knows another play/film that i could watch to get a good model for the role it would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

I can't seem to find the memories section of this community so I am most likely asking something that has been asked a dozen times! But here goes.

I'm looking for a great photographer to do my headshots in Seattle Washington. My last portfolio was shot by David Hiller who is an amazing photographer but who is currently out of my price range. If there are any actors here that know someone in Seattle let me know. Thanks!

Hi all,

I auditioned for my first college play this afternoon, the first audition I have had since middle school. It was a set of two one act plays, and I had fun but did not get casted. While I'm a little bummed, I had a good time and hope to try again over the next two years.

I did do two acting camps when I was 16 and 17, but they did not require auditions and I had <12 lines in either role. Additionally, I am farrrrr more outgoing and confident now than I was at that time.

Both of the auditions [for either one-act] required us to be rather seductive, and while I was clumsy in one audition I was pretty on point in the other; I even grabbed the shirt collar on the guy I was working with :O
But it did get me wondering...how do you know if you've crossed the line into overacting? I definitely tried to base what I was doing off of the girls who were ahead of me, and they were...intense. I didn't copy them word for word, but I watched their diction, mannerisms, etc.

Also, if anyone has any general advice on how to handle future college auditions, that would be great.
Not looking to get a major role anytime soon, but I've decided I want to be in at least one play before I graduate :)

Thanks!

EDIT: I'm on good terms with one of the girls who directed a one-act, and the other director was very friendly and said she had seen me around campus before. Would it be out of line for me to approach one of them and ask for advice about other auditions? It would be totally non-aggressive, I'd let them know that I had fun and want to try again next year.

Not sure of this ot O/T or not but... Mar. 3rd, 2008 @ 10:35 pm

So, i have a screen test coming up for a film and if I get the role (which is VERY likely), I will be asked to sign a SAG contract. What are the pros and cons to this? I am kind of unsure...am I welcome to leave sag at any time?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm new and let me just say thanks for your help before I even ask my question.

Does anyone here have information about CFB Casting Agency, I know they do the majority of the casting work for 20th Century Fox television. I'm having a hard time getting in contact with anyone or anything besides an an answering machine. I just need to talk or email to a living person haha.

Thanks for the help :)

 Hello actors guild members!

I'd like to introduce myself and tell you that I'm glad to be part of this community.  Feel free to check out my LiveJournal profile and/or my web site (www.JohnSudolStudio.com) for more about the teaching and coaching I do for actors.

I recently wrote an article for BackStage West magazine called  How To Make Auditions Dynamic.  It was printed in the 11/1 issue and is now online.   I think you'll find some good tips on how to bring your auditions up to a performance level.  Here's the link:

Not compatible with games using 6axis

By darkprincealain/Polaris/Gavin/Sartana from Gurhal, Phantasy Star Universe on 11/13/2007

2out of 5

Pros: Easy to learn, Better PS Button Placemen, Good Button Placement, Balanced, Meatier than Sixaxis

Cons: Doesn't support Sixaxis

Best Uses: Online Gaming

Describe Yourself: Hardcore Gamer

How long have you owned it: One-to-three months

SixAxis functions that require lifting, shaking or moving of the controller will not work. Save for your multiplayer PS2 and PSone games. PS3 games without major SixAxis functions will work just fine as well. Love the other functions, and the placement of the PS button is in just the right location to prevent you from accidentally hitting it--something I can't say for the standard controller. Overall, some ups and downs--too bad this puppy doesn't do SixAxis.

I have worked in the entertainment industry for over 20 years and have accumulated a wealth of knowledge. When I started out, I didn't have much information and spent countless weeks, months and even years learning the ropes by trial and error. I know how valuable information and resources are to people who are starting out from scratch. So I recently decided to use some of my spare time to create a blog with Disney Channel casting notices, audition information, information on getting an agent, demo-reels, resumes, etc. There are far too many scam artists out there who take advantage of those actors who are trying to make their dreams come true. The information and casting notices I provide are totally free and legitimate. Hopefully I can save some people a few bucks and a lot of footwork.

(I have also created a sister-site Hannah Montana Auditions, and a general Acting Auditions site)

Sincerely,

Alan Baltes

» A Quick Hello
Hi there.
This is just a quick note to introduce myself.
I'm a 23 year old actress and I left my full time job in august this year to put all my efforts into my acting. I've picked up enough work so far to keep me out of trouble but I was just after any advice from my fellow actors. Anybody got any hints and tips? Insider information? Anyone know a good agent based in the midlands?

So, I need some help.

I've been reading and reading and reading plays, trying to find something I'd like to direct, something that speaks to me. I'm hoping that you all can give me some suggestions for plays or playwrights you know that perhaps would be good to check out.

This is what I'm looking for:

* Full-length production
* Minimum of 5 cast members
* Something that has obvious place for theatrical conventions (i.e. not just straightforward story. There are opportunities for theatrical elements, like stylized dialogue or movement) (e.g. the woman's role in Saucy Jack by Sharon Pollock; some elements of Caryl Churchill's work)
* Strong and in-your-face; invigorates or grabs an audience (e.g. the harsh look at relationships in Closer by Patrick Marber)

I'm open to any themes, issues, etc. Even if you know of something that really speaks to you, but doesn't necessarily stick to the things I've outlined, suggest it anyway.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

-Justen

Alright, fellow actors, I just graduated high school and college theatre is approaching.

Bad news: I have no monolouges!

Good news: I have a whole summer.

The question I have here is: What is the best resource I could use to find recent (at the most 5 years old) plays wherein I could find some good monolouges?

Trying to be fresh face, haha.

Thanks!

Hi. If my friends and I were making a little movie just for fun, would it be a good idea to put it on Youtube? I plan on getting alittle bit of exposure there. I was thinking that there might be some agents or talent scouts looking for people like me. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone! I'm sort of new here- I've browsed around for a couple of months but never posted anything. I'm your everyday, musical theatre obsessed teenage girl, who soon as some major auditioning coming up, and I need help finding a song. I'm a mezzo saprano (Belting generally.) to a high first saprano (Highest note being an E above treble. Very operetta.) I've had 7 years of private vocal lessons, but I still have a weak second saprano range. I've already tried to pick out a few songs, but I was wondering what you guys thought. If you have any songs in mind, PLEASE feel free to suggest! I need something that will show my range and that can be cut down to just at 2 or 3 minutes long.

I Dreamed a Dream- Les Miserables
On My Own- Les Miserables
One Companion- The Phantom of the Opera
Some Like You- Jekyll and Hyde
A New Life- Jekyll and Hyde
My Strongest Suit- Aida
Summertime- Porgy and Bess
Defying Gravity- Wicked (A cut, solo part.)

So, any idea's?

PS: I hoep this is allowed, if not, I'll be sure to take it down! Thanks!

Hi! I'm new to this community and I was wondering if you know of any good colleges to go to if you want to be an actor. It doesn't have to be an acting college in particular, but just a good college with good acting prgrams.
THANKS!!

» Hello!

Just really posting to introduce myself - I'm a fifteen year-old aspiring actor (and yes, you can use actor for girls), who lives in England. At the moment I am rehearsing four roles: one for a production of Hamlet I'm putting on, and three for my LAMDA examinations. So, does anyone have any suggestions for how to play the following roles:
Laertes
Mr Orange
Cecily Cardew
Guildenstern
I've got my characterisation for Guil down pretty well, but I'd really like some advice on Cecily, as she is proving extremely difficult to play.

» Baron / Brown studio?
Hello there,

I'm a college student who's currently researching acting programs. Does anybody know if the courses at the Baron/Brown Studio in Santa Monica are any good?

I've heard two interviews with Joanne Baron and pretty much agreed with her take on acting and training (based on Meisner), but... has anybody gone there and knows what the courses are actually like? How the place looks etc.?

Thanks,
Anty

PS: Oh, and my favorite play is "Long Day's Journey Into Night". Original, I know.
