"Kelly" Part 16

OK, so who the fuck is Kelly?

That's what you're all thinking, and my tail is firmly between my legs. But let me just qualify here: everything happens for a reason. My time away from our little aquarium buddies here at ACT-I-VATE was neither without intent nor effect; once you get below the cut you'll see. I've been learning some tricks on the SHOOTING WAR grind that are gonna cross-pollinate "Kelly" in some interesting ways. After all, ACT-I-VATE is our public laboratory/gymnasium by design, ain't it? As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts, peoples.

A quick handshake and kiss for those of you stepping onto the "Kelly" Express for the first time (ACT-I-VATE's been spreading like mono at summer camp lately): "Kelly" is my love, my heart, the pure joy reason that I do comics. I am glad you've found it at last and hope you stick around for the ride. Here's a refreshing mint in case you're confused.

And before you click, before you drop back into this little world you've missed nowhere near as much as I have, let me quickly inform you that there are only two more online episodes left of SHOOTING WAR standing in between us and a more manageable schedule, the penultimate chapter hitting the web this Wednesday. After that, the new-and-continuing adventures of frazzled warblogger Jimmy Burns will be available IN PRINT in a big sexy hardcover coming Fall 2007 from Warner Books. To keep up with that kinda news of mine, check [info]dangoldman or dangoldmandotnet on the regular or on the RSS.

On behalf of Max, Kelly, and that little minx Theresa, thanks for coming back to us. We missed you soooooo much. We're gonna do this weekly again soon enough, I promise. Along with some really hot new work as well (wink wink)

--------love------> d!

I don't know how much sympathy I can feel for Max with that...ringtone. Aack! Now it's going through my head endlessly!

Is it my imagination, or is he about to get fiiiiired?

Forget the ringtone, it's that SHIRT that's gonna scar my brain...

Welcome back, btw.

That boss is a total time-Nazi. Which is appropriate given the swastika on the clock. What a great idea for a new character: TIME-NAZI. Someone asks what time it is, like because they're running late or whatever, and he pops out of nowhere in full SS regalia and bondage mask and goes: "It's NAZI TIME, bitch!" and then slugs the guy. And it's up to slacker superhero CAPTAIN 4:20 to stop him with his magic bong, which maybe he stole from Kelly.

That idea's free, I won't even charge you for it.

That's exactly what "Kelly" needs, Dougan... NAZI-BATTLING SUPERHEROES. You're a genius!!!

I'm going to scrap the next two acts completely and do Max+Kelly as a Captain American & Bucky nostalgic hero+sidekick riff, send them off to Normandy to battle those dirty Ratzis.

Actually, I'm very proud of the personally apocalyptic battles fought in "Kelly" already... and having a blast puppeteering the battles just around the corner.

is captain 4:20 a reference to hitler's birthday?

Is April 20 Hitler's b-day? I was referring to 4:20 as the universal stoner code for smoking up.

it is that too. also hitler's birthday and the anniversary of the columbine shootings.

Goldman, are you getting all this? ;)

how could I miss it? I'm personally emailed about every damn comment...

interesting synchronized ideas, but unless you're Don DeLillo or Philip Roth, still within that zone of shock value that I am trying to incinerate and genetically reengineer in comics.

there are other writers that butter their bread with these details, but I'm not one of them...

just you wait and see where "Kelly" is going, my darlings.

Damn, I miss this strip. Beautiful rendering and spot on script, bro-san. I love how it goes B&W at the end there. I have real troubles having Max's back what with his fashion, lunch, and ringtone choices but I can certainly empathize with his dilemma. And the Nazi tropes are killer.

Kelly? How did you make me come to miss a freak like Kelly?

Thanks, papa. It was like coming home again after a long trip to Fallujah...

I promise to squeeze more frequent Kelly's out of my dwindling and precious draw-hours; the story's about to take some real cool turns and it's burns inside me to keep it moving.

Thanks, dollink. Switching gears abruptly is something I'm going to have to get used to... it was a little bumpier at first, but then suddenly it was like I'd never been away.

Glad to make you happy too, sugar-pickle.

A lot of visual information going on in this one! Nice to have an update.

I wasn't sure about the photo backgrounds at first, but then I thought it emphasizes that he isn't at one with the city (yet?).

it can mean whatever you need it to mean, but it's just supposed to be pretty.

"Kelly" makes me so happy because it lets me make something beautiful out of something ugly.

Thanks P... it's been cooking for awhile and I aim to keep them flowing more regularly as the online SHOOTING WAR grind comes to a close.

Also, I'm creating a totally new comic that's coming to A-I-V soon as an extra special treat.
