"Kelly" Part 15

Forgive me father, for I have sinned. It's been 20 days since my last "Kelly" and the burden hangs heavy on my soul and causeth my testy-sack to droop in an uncomely fashion in keeping with my times. I have missed our friends Kelly and Max, and it makes me very sad to space out the frequency of installments as the pacing of the story itself begins to gain speed. I truly hope this doesn't affect the "experience" and that you're still enjoying reading "Kelly" as much as I am making it; soon enough, it'll be more regular... After all, SHOOTING WAR reaches its midpoint on Monday.

Anybody wanna FRESHEN UP before we get back into it? Beware: it's a long load with many images... but it is a graphic novel we're making here, ya heard?

A swastika moon? You reinvent the comix lexicon with every episode of KELLY.

When WILL Max catch a break? Should he? They shoot horses don't they?

Another amazing installment. Create KELLY when you can during your exemplary SHOOTING WAR stint. It's well worth the wait.

A) I saw Dino's "They shoot horses don't they?" comment, and immediately thought of the little boy at the end of Shane

B) You HAVE seen Shane, haven't you?

C) I think I was kinda looking at it as Shane representing Max's hopes and dreams of finally having found the right place, but...apparently it's time for them to move on.

I have not seen Shane BUT don't take it personal-like.
It's also the original title of "KELLY"

Thanks, pops. It's actually HARDER, I have found, to do one episode every 2-3 weeks than it is to do one a week... I wanna stay prune-regular.

Max's break is coming soon and he will be living on a cloud in the sky... but first we're gonna kick him in the nuts a few more times.

if by misdirection, you mean the tattoo... WE saw it back in Chapter 5:

the audience saw it, but dear Maxie didn't... hence the sense of danger/suspense from us and the yet-still-trust of Max.

Glad to have you here!

Maybe you need to read more comix... yknow, to build up a tolerance.

There's alot of good ones on ACT-I-VATE today; Rami's HEBI NO HADA is consistently amazing and Leland brung the earthquake-force this morning with V&V.

And then there's that OTHER comic I do every week these days; I am sure you can find info about that someplace.... :P

The whole of act_i_vate has really been pleasing me as of late. I'm still kinda taken aback by the overall quality. You usually find at least one dud in a collection, y'know? You guys, each of you, have much moxy.

Even better than a swastika moon? Swastika letter "n!" That's just great! Aside from that, I am enjoying your use of color immensely. And watching the characters develop. And reading the dialogue. And... okay, you get the idea. :-)

I will now meditate and wait patiently for the next chapter, as I must...maybe I'll go clear out those chakras that I've been meaning to...

Alternate Ending:

Thanks; it might interest you to know of that typographic-slash-swastika details came in during the last hour or so of working on the chapter.

The alternate ending of the chapter was to have Kelly asking Max what was wrong as he hastily exits the room. Max looks back at Kelly with swastikas in his eyes (this stayed in but moved) and the closing shot is Kelly-as-Adolf-Hitler, but with soft blue eyes pleading not to "shut him out" again.

Alot of my favorite bits of "Kelly" have struck in spontaneous instants.

Spontaneous inspiration is the best! And how fitting for a story featuring a most interesting and spontaneous fellow. ;-)

The alternate ending is pretty cool, but having heard it, I like the ending you went with. It grounds the reader firmly in Max's perspective, and I think you're going for Max having to learn to break out of this perspective. Am I right?

Also, it's a great cliffhanger. :-D

What *I* am trying to do over here on ACT-I-VATE is like strumming a guitar with a practice amp in the bathroom with a tape recorder and seeing what effects I can get. The story is the skeleton that grounds the experiment. God, I am such a pretentious ass.

But yeah, visual laboratory aside, I tend to write character pieces... and these two bozos will have quite a tale for you by the time the telling's told.

That doesn't sound very pretentious to me. It sounds exciting, groundbreaking, electrifying, etc. But then, I did go to art school after all...and I used to date a musician...

Character pieces are some of my favorites! Keep going! I can't wait to see how it all plays out. :-)

I was wondering when there was going to be another twist aout Kelly.

Panel number 6 is the best piece of comics art I've seen in ages. This was well worth the wait.

Thank you... that praise means alot. I hope to keep the waiting as minimal as I can (doing two different comics every week... and this is the one i do for free).

There will be more twists for all characters; I promise you this... but I can also promise you that when the book is done, you'll know our people pretty well.

Naw, she keeps me razor-sharp. RAZOR.

Did I ever tell you that *she* is the genesis of "Kelly"...? It's true.

We'd first announced our first teasers pre-launch, and I had NO IDEA what I was going to do a comic about. We were sitting around at the veggie chinese on Flatbush and I was kvetching about not being in my ideas... and she looked across the table at me, with a mock-chicken nugget in her hand and said, "why don't you tell the story of you and [ROOMMATE WHO IS BASIS OF KELLY]?" I got a big grin and she got a big kiss and the rest, they say, is comix.

It's really hard for me to see Kelly as a NAZI. Maybe he had the swastika put on his ass as a statement of contempt for NAZIs? Maybe he has "flings" with various fringe-ideas and this is a vestige of a past phase? (maybe there's a hammer-n-sickle on the other cheek, or on his scrotum, we haven't seen yet?)

I have no idea. You sure have me holding my breath waiting for future developments.

From the look of comedic utter gratitude in panel 3 to anus/swastika in panel 5 to the pure fury and gutpunch astonishment in panel 6 - all world class comic craft. Then topping those with the sophistication of message and mood of panel 8, 9, 10 - makes me feel a little sorry for panel 1. It didn't have a big job, it was just a little ol' carrier of exposition. Never had a chance.

Well, thank God for the "pacing panel."

And God bless Dan Goldman.

Also: Pastrami. Great instinct, you.

Aw shit... look at you with the pretty little LJ account. Pretty bunny boy who sez pretty poli things.

Glad you liked this one; "Kelly" is burning inside me to come out and it's often frustrating that other projects must be finished first... but this is my sweet little baby that has my eyes, my lips, my anus.

Shy little exposition-Panel 1 says thank you from its tent behind the living room drapes.
