I'm really serious. I wish I could think to draw like that. The comic feels like it's moving down the fire escape, step by step. I love the way you have the man's shoes stepping down on top of the main panel, then the man's face speaking on his cell on top of the shoes. It makes it look like an edgy situation, but the dude has everything under control.

How did you think to do that? Do you notice the scenery around you while you were on top of a building and think "this would make a good comics page"?

Poop, I got some details wrong. I suck at memory. Anyway, the sentiment's the same.

actually that particular building with the fire escapes was a 3d model i built in Bryce3d...which took forever and a day, but it allowed me to position the 'camera' whereever I thought i could get the best angle for the shot, as well as keep continuity throughout the other shots with the building...
although the model was just a big blocky grey thing with no real windows or texture, so i inked and colored it to match the rest of the pages...
it was a curious and useful experiment...the comicbook version of "hollywood magic"...:)

Ah! Still a lot of work, but it pays off. I'm in animation school working with Maya myself, and it's challenging.

I'd love to know my way around Maya, if only for the water and atmosphere effects...really a sweet program

your process fascinates the shit out of me; i've played some with sketchup but that's the extent of my 3D capabilities so far. i'd love to learn more about incorporating some models into my process; any advice for a novice?

oh also? the way you USE your process to squeeze gorgeous storytelling... that's the stuff. your chops are MEGADETH, Dimitt.

"any advice"...I no longer have Bryce on my computer, and i've been miss'n it recently...my system took a big dump on me several months ago and i wound up losing the work files that contained the models for those buildings as well as Edward's house ( which was a huge loss )...
still, i'm going to install Bryce again and recreate some more buildings and put together a tutorial 'walk-through' for you...might be a few weeks though.
I often think to start more 'walk-throughs', but to really visually describe all of the steps in a way that's clearly helpful is a bit daunting...and then there's also that tenuous "movie magic" quailty that I try to keep behind the wizard's curtain as well...heh
still, i try to put one together during one of these next particularly difficult pages and share it with you.

four years, that's totally camping.
that word is as addictive as crack but is as sexxxy as cocaine, which is still as addictive as crack.

:) you know, I honestly hadn't considered it being a sexy word...heh...that might'a altered the entire plot if i had.
yeah, it'll be roughly another 40 pages yet before you find out...:)

it's not sexy, it's seXXXy. which leaves room for that kinky shit that's too risky for even the japanese.
page 40! you mean drocklebearies are not the bumpy-bleedy things on that dude's skin!?
damn, not it's like i know when the big score is coming in, and everything else is just to tide me over and built the addiction.
you sir are a master of your craft. you've managed to make a word of your own devising very compelling.

"it's seXXXy. which leaves room for that kinky shit that's too risky for even the japanese."...*grin*...there's a tag-line to beat all tag-lines! :)
just for that, I'll give you a tiny partial hint...a 50% hint...heh
Drockleberries are to the Bumpy-Bleedy things, what Urinary Tract Infection & Sudden Blindness is to Viagra :)

if only i had access to the S.A.T.s, i would make that a question.

thanks for the hint. now i have more pointed questions. like
are drockleberries sexual?
are drockleberries what you get when old dudes try to sustain an unnatural erection?
and
wtf: drockleberries!?

Your characters are beautiful (yes, especially those) and your storytelling crisp. I like how the dark, serious tone is counter-balanced by the vibrant colors.

it’s odd...for reasons that weren’t entirely planned, the colors throughout much of this story have been what one might expect from a more cartooned kind’a storytelling...not sure what to chalk that up to aside from being so incredibly inspired by all manner of the art and storytelling from those “FLIGHT” books, that had a big impact on me shortly before I dove into this thing...I hope it shows, as time goes on, that I’ve been slowly trying to improve upon it, rather than try to distance myself from it...still...heh...we all have those nights when we think, “shit, have I really learned anything?” :)
