I'm a little ahead of the game, as you know, Kev, but that doesn't stop me from appreciating how gorgeous your work on this is, and the writing as well. From those ghostly reflections to her world-weary high-school eyes... just fantastic.
nice. I was hoping this would be a furries kind of thing about a talking fish and his jellyfish friend as they avoid the hammerhead shark guy who's a bully. But this will do.
Grabbed me right off with a quotation...“Nausea” was the first book I inherited from my brother, and I ain’t been the same since...heh nice job bro...bring the gritty goods :)
Hook, line, and sinker. You've GOT me, Kevin. Great start! Awesome use of two-color, and the staging is pitch perfect. I don't even know if I "like" these people and I need to know more!
nice opening quote. i love satre. it's a nice set up and you deivered. i held my beathe while reading this and watching the background for creepy clues. it's all quite lovely, really. i'm so looking forward to more.
Kevin - Jeff Kilpatrick here. I have a livejournal but never use it. That's some nice inks and colors? Do you live in Fishtown? Are you from here?
Scott Derby, another Philly Cartoonist Society member, and I started a book back in 2002 that was originally called "Fishtown", then changed to "Fishtown Chronicles". Then all these outsiders started to move to my neighborhood, and the area became way too well known to name the book after it. So Derby changed the name of the book to "Wonderful". We did some shorts in different anthologies that took place in an urban setting much like Fishtown. There were a lot of bar stories and 4AM "Tom Waitsish" stuff (Tom Waits rulez, by the way).
After so many yuppies and artists moved here, the idea just got played out in my mind. I scrapped my stories, because I didn't the idea of people stereotyping my neighborhood. And I definitely didn't want to be the one pushing that stereotype. I felt too many people worked too hard to sustain the neighborhood.
However, I do a "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" type cartoon in the local papers and I also staple them up as fliers in the neighborhood. The project is called "Sketches of Fishtown". I wanted to highlight all the good things about Fishtown (local neighbors, businesses, history, etc.) I wanted the new folks coming in to tread lightly and realize this was a longstanding family neighborhood. I also wanted the longtime neighbors to stay here and appreciate all the new benefits that a wealthier neighborhood has (like cops who actually patrol the streets to lessen the drug activity). We never had that before because it was all working class and poor people before this new real estate boom. Now we live in a much safer, less tough environment. It's nice to breathe a little easier.
Anyways, if you wanna check out those Sketches of Fishtown cartoons, you can see them on my meathaus.com page. They're in the dropdown menu at the bottom:
Also, if you live in Fishtown, drop me an email: phillytoon@yahoo.com. We can grab a beer and a whiskey. I LOVE beer and whiskey (unfortunately, I do fit the mold of a Fistown drunkard).
since i'm too lazy to read thru the comments that have already been posted, i may duplicate something... looks fuckin tight. looking forward to more. ~j!, also understands catholic school

The only "drug" I did in the school bathroom was cough syrup and it ended up with me being a shirtless, screaming, puking mess, before the final bell. I saved heroin for... um... nevermind. Haha, uh...
Great beginning. It all works and makes me want more, as in the whole thing right now in front of me. Glad to have you on board!!!
