I'm unreasonably excited to have been searching around and found a bunch of folks who adore the movie the way I do! I recently wrote about why, at least in part, I love it so much and thought you might be interested.

Here's the blurb given to my essay about the joys of childhood Christmas avarice, the bygone days of Lifebuoy hors d'oeuvres and how watching A Christmas Story every year makes the whole season bearable.

Hello everyone! Merry Christmas! It's your friendly community maintainer ehmondieu. I've been really busy lately so haven't had much time to be around here.

Anyway...I've been around Christmas shopping and I've seen some cool Christmas Story stuff.

I just thought I should share this, since there are probably going to be some other disappointed people this season because of it. I'd like to believe I can't be the only one.

Recently, my cable line-up has changed. From what I read, it effects people in Canada [I'm in eastern Canada myself] and some of the United States, but I'm not sure on that. I no longer receive TBS, it has been replaced with Peachtree TV. We were warned about a week before it happened, and then it just.. happened.

The first worry I had when this happened was literally 'what about my marathon!?'

So I sent Peachetree TV an email, about two weeks ago, inquiring about whether or not the marathon would be played on Peachtree TV, and just received my response about an hour ago.

I am not impressed.

This was what I got in return:

"Thank you for your correspondence. We appreciate hearing your views and welcome your suggestions.

At this time we do not have the rights to air A Christmas Story which will air on TBS beginning Christmas Eve. Our programming department does have variety in mind and will take your suggestions into consideration for future planning.

It seems that those of us who have received this change in channel [which we had no choice in, to my knowledge; but what else is new?] will not be viewing the 24 Hours A Christmas Story marathon this Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Christmas in my house isn't going to be the same this year, that's for sure. ~~I do own the DVD edition, yes, but it's just not the same; I'm sure some of you know what I mean.~~

I was thinking of making a Facebook group in support of those of us getting stiffed, making some sort of meager petition for people to sign, or.. something, but my pessimism makes me believe that it won't do any good. :\

Who knows, maybe they'll acquire the rights before Christmas comes along, and we'll get it after all, but right now it looks bleak to me.

Anyway. Just thought I'd warn people about this. Thoughts? Comments? Anybody?

Director Bob Clark, who helmed the modern holiday classic A Christmas Story and was the writer-director-producer of the Porky's films, died in a car crash with his son on the Pacific Coast Highway early Wednesday morning; he was 67. According to police reports, Clark's car was hit head-on around 2:30am by an SUV that swerved into Clark's southbound lane; Clark and his 22 year-old son, Ariel, were pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV driver, who was driving without a license, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and is to be booked for gross vehicular manslaughter. The director of the 1974 cult horror film Black Christmas as well as the 1980 Jack Lemmon drama Tribute (which nabbed Lemmon a Best Actor Oscar nomination), Clark scored a major box office success in the early '80s with the teen sex comedy Porky's, a surprise hit that he wrote, directed and produced which became the highest-grossing film of 1982 and one of the highest-grossing films ever in Canada. Clark went on to helm the sequel, Porky's II: The Next Day, a year later, but it was another 1983 film that would become his most memorable. Based on humorist Jean Shepherd's short story collection In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, A Christmas Story was the nostalgic and humorous tale of a young boy named Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) growing up in the 1940s who yearned for the ultimate Christmas gift, a Red Ryder BB gun. My friend Donald, darkraven901, posted about this in his journal and I'm passing this along on the off chance that maybe someone can help. I've known him a long time now, so I feel comfortable getting the word out.

On December 18th, his 16 year old sister ran away from home. She left a note for her mom that the town was too small for her and she was going to NYC to pursue a career in art. No one has heard from her since. She took a lot of stuff with her, though, which leads them to believe someone came and picked her up - possibly someone she knew from MySpace.

On top of this, their mother just finished chemo and radiation for colon cancer, so things were already stressful around the house.

If anyone has any information - which I realize is a long shot - please let someone know.

My mom sent me this link today! I want to go there and see the house! How many of you have your own leg lamps? I know that a few years ago, Urban Outfitters was selling big ones and also mini ones as well. This is our kind of guy! For those of you who wonder if the following link is worth it, it is. This guy bought the REAL Christmas Story house and totally transformed it back to how it was in the movie, then bought the house across the street and turned it into a store where you can buy memorablia from the movie.
