When Sephiroth was seventeen, his mother brought home a man she'd met, Hojo. This was their second date and should have been a nice, family-type dinner but instead the evening ended with Jenova and her son chained to her bed. Hojo then proceeded to spend two days performing various "experiments" on Jenova, demonstrating how, while he was indeed a doctor as he'd claimed, he was quite insane and homicidal. By the end of the second day she was barely alive but still begging him to stop as he vivisected her, ending with him decapitating her, slowly, with a scalpel. While Sephiroth was rescued and Hojo was apprehended, the trauma of being forced to experience his mother's murder caused Sephiroth to develop Multiple Personality Disorder to try to cope. His fundamental personality was hidden away and he presented himself as one of three brothers: Kadaj for anger and aggression, Yazoo for intelligence and depression, and Loz for possessive grief. Sephiroth is completely unaware of this happening, and does not know the brothers exist; his own mind has been sleeping since the brothers exhibited themselves.

All the wind comes down through here, no trees or rocks or hill sides to divert or buffer it. The planes, he's heard, are the safest from monsters, from ambush, because you can see anything coming, but at night, people wandering off to relieve themselves or to think their own thoughts.... He doesn't know where to go. As he steps he's avoiding hands, fingers, arms, legs. As he steps, he's getting closer to the voice yelling for everyone to get nice and close, aye. Soon enough he's standing right at the fire, center of the blanket of people, and that voice gains a face and limbs and it's Saur.
