Lovely! i'm in Medford on the Somerville line. : ) I have hardly found anyone in the area who knows what Absinthe is, never mind actually likes it!

I brought several back with me from Germany and haven't done much more than a glass here and there. I love the stuff, but can only handle it small doses, which is pathetic. ; )

Tabu and La Fee are absolute rotgut. I have a few high-content thujone brands at home, one with a large plant actually steeping in it. I'm still learning, but it seems to be the thujone that doesn't rest well with me which is why I enjoy it slowly.
It is great stuff.

You guys do know you're supposed to dilute it with water, don't you? And that the thujone thing is a myth?

Well duh, if you take it pure. What is hyped up is the amount that's in absinthe and how much of absinthe's effect is due to the thujone (ignoring fenchone, anethol and severel other active ingredients).

I believe the story you refer to is here.

It is the manufacturers themselmes who are promoting the myth by excitedly hawking "strong" high-thujone as the best.

Read the science. There's very little thujone in properly made absinthe.

First of all, burning sugar is for dumbasses. Second, I've never paid $200 for absinthe and never would. I doubt you've ever "produced so-called "classic" absinthe with all the spices and whatnot." You steeped a bunch of herbs in Everclear along with the rest of the proles.

I'm not going to argue with you. You don't know what your talking about.

So tell us all about your encyclopedic knowledge of Thujone Klopman.

Better yet, tell us how much Thujone survives the distillation process, and how you have accurately tested absinthe for thujone content.

Anyone that steeps wormwood in alcohol and then drinks the result, knows nothing of making absinthe.

Klopman you are fool, and anyone that would listen to you would be an even bigger fool.

That you don't understand why Absinthe is distilled, speaks volumns about your idiocy.

Read copies of Bedel, Fritsch, Brevans, & Duplais on the fabrication of Liqueurs, and perhaps you will not make an even bigger ass of yourself.

Your ignorance is staggering Klopman, go do your homework little boy.

Klopman Quote:"Absinthe is a distilled spirit, Brainiac. How would there be thujone in it at all if it did "not survive" the distillation process?"

That statement shows how little you really know.

Just wondering about something. Is absinthe still illegal in the states? and if so are you guys having to get it shipped from abroad at an astronmical cost? Or am I just really behind the times...?

Good Absinthe is not cheap no matter where it's gotten. It's not legal for liquor stores to sell it here, but as I understand, it is for personal consumption.

[info]abraxas

Why yes I do.

Offered for substantially less than $200 is the François Guy at $85 including shipping. It's among my current favorites. When it was released a couple years ago, the Un Emile was considered the best absinthe available. The Lemercier "Abisinthe" Amer 72 isn't bad either (don't bother with the other Lemercier's). The Pernod is shite.

These are all beginner absinthes, though. They're inexpensive enough to try a few bottles and get a taste for how different absinthes can be. When you're ready to spend some money, head over to http://www.absintheonline.com/ and pick up a bottle of Jade Nouvelle-Orleans or Jade Suisse Verte 65. They're the best absinthes commercially available (still ony around $100 a bottle). If that's too steep for you, try the Verte de Fougerolles. Good luck, and

Cheers!

I can certainly sympathize. I have absolutely nothing productive to add to this controversy since I have marginal knowledge of absinthe in general. The most I've learned thus far was from the proprieter in an absinthe store in Germany.

I could paste all of these comments in a new post if you like and let you all have at it. >: )
