| I'm looking for some new pizza and burger places. Particularly NY style pizza. I've already been to Giovanni's and I liked it. I believe there's a NY style pizzeria on Coors over by West Mesa H.S. Anyone been there? Any other NY style pizzerias in town? Anybody been to that new place called Slices on Central?
As for burgers, who's better; Griff's or Rex? How about that place that's home of the Wimpy burger?
Sorry, but a couple of names escape me right now.
Thanks. | comments: 6 comments or Leave a comment |
| #1 - El Pollo Real #2 - 600 Lousiana bvd SE #3 - 505-266-2305 #4 - Some Mexican/Newmexican Fare, but Specializes in Columbian foods #5 - Hours 11am-8pm M-Su
Website is kinda broken, but maybe they are working on it. http://www.elpollorealnm.com/
Service -7 Got there and we were the only ones, 7:15pm on a Thursday, The tv was blaring loudly some spanish show, we sat ad far from it as possible, Th waitress acted in experienced, but very nice, and had no problem understanding us and was fairly attentive. About 10 minuted into us being there a large family came in, and in short order asked for the tv to be turned down, she complied and we were all quick to thank her!
Pricing -9 some dishes were surprisingly cheap, the rest are just cheap! Plates were in thr $7-11 range, but there were many meal sounding optiosn that were $4 or less.
Quality -6 My dish was a little overcooked, but not badly so.
Taste - 7, Not very spicy, but it was all pretty tasty. Must go back to try their Arepas, (after Cafe Choroni, im addicted to those things!)
Cleanliness - place was freshly painted, and clean.
Decor/ambiance - odd. a few misplaced paintings, and artworks, and some photos of dishes, and a few sombraro hats.
Style - Its the only Columbian food place ive ever been to, but it reminded me of many other ethnic food places, Nice people, good focus on the foods, eager to please.
Other comments/story/review - Found out about it from the writeup in the Local-IQ, Decided to try it out, (turns out its in the same building as a previous place my mom and I tried to go to but it had closed that week, (cant recall what it was called/served then), This time it was open and well lighted, As i mentioned above the Tv was kinda a turnoff, but when they turned it off we became much more happy. I ordered the Plato Vaquero, (Chicken, sausage, 'meat' yucca, and plantain), yep "meat" not quite sure it was pretty over grilled, but it tasted like it was probably pork. Chicken was great, not surprising with Pollo being their namesake, saussage was good, and the basically tempura dipped yucca was quite good! Dad ordered the Ropa Vieja, (Shredded beef in a creole sauce rice beans and plantain), rice and beans were good texture and flavor, as was the shredded beef, was a little cold but we also sat pretty far from the kitchen.
Conclusion - Id go back! | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| Where in town has the best variety of pies? Back in ye olde days my family used to go to Heidi Pies (and, as a result, I had German chocolate pie long before I had German chocolate cake), and when they went squish we could still get pie from Marie Calendar's, but I think they've all closed up, too.
Specifically, I'm looking for chocolate meringue pie, but somewhere with a wide variety of pies would be good in case I want some other sort of pie at some other time.
The best variety we've been able to find is at Village Inn, but their pies certainly pale in comparison to Heidi's and Marie Calendar's. | comments: 5 comments or Leave a comment |
| i find your restaurants terribly disappointing. i challenge you to change my mind on the subject. after living in santa fe, san francisco, and new york my standards are rather high.
please inform me of restaurants worth checking out.
things i am interested in finding:
a good new mexican restaurant. given that we are in new mexico, this shouldn't be all that difficult. but my previous attempts have failed me. i've found a few places with decent red chile. but everywhere i've tried is lacking in the green department. i keep hearing recommendations for places that only serve breakfast and lunch...but i work nights, so waking up and eating before 3 is a rare thing for me. the alibi's reviews are useless...they seem to think atmosphere and margaritas are more important factors in a review than the actual food.
any good ethnic cuisines. the more obscure, the better. i like trying new things.
good reasonably priced places. i've had decent food at a lot of the high end restaurants, but cant afford to go to any of them on a regular basis.
a good italian place...preferably somewhere that carries beef carpaccio (other than scalo, because theirs isn't all that good).
much appreciation in advance...my taste buds are depending on you.
sincerely, verablue | comments: 31 comments or Leave a comment |
| Is there a steakhouse that serves USDA prime cuts of steak? I don't just mean prime rib, I mean a place where ALL the cuts are prime, like at a Morton's or some place similar. Anyone been to the Tumbleweed Steakhouse? It's like, WAY west on Central, barely in ABQ! If so, what was it like? Or, hey, what's your favorite place to have a steak once in a while?
Thanks.

Service - 9, just the one guy, (Carlos), His english is ok, but he has a strong accent, sometimes a little hard to understand, but very nice!
Pricing - 7, they are about normal for moderately upscale, individual areperas are only about $4.50 but takes 2 for a decent lunch)
Quality - 9 ive been there twice, everything is full of flavor and really well put together
Taste - 9 Wow is a word i would use for it, its my new favorite place near work, unfortunately they sell out on lots of foods by 1pm when i usually get a lunch, and they close by 3
Cleanliness - 9 place is nearly spotless. not bad at all for a stripmall place facing a very busy street.
Decor/ambiance - he is attempting to depict a curb side cafe inside his little shop, could have stood to have better AC today, so it felt a little muggy, but then the rains came!
Style - pretty unique here, much like pupusas their signature food is the arepas, which are little flat corn breads sliced open and filled with tasty things, (i had black bean and white cheese in one, and chicken and green chile in the other, both were very tasty!
Previous time I was there he was out of alot of things, so i just had a chicken sandwich, which was very tasty!
Conclusion - yum!
They also have wifi, | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| Just got back froma lunch run back to Pepper's Ole' Fashion BBQ, (SanPedro And Copper).
previously reviewed here http://community.livejournal.com/abq_eats/57060.html
And aside from the huge family of 9 that took 15 minutes to order infornt of me in line, the experience was every bit as tasty and rewarding as last time.
Got the chicken/Brisket 2 meat combo with dirty rice and fried cabbage. The chicken portion was not as big as our first visit, diminishing the $ to lb of food value a bit, but it was just as tasty! and the dirty rice was so nice and spicy! Never had what i knew to be fried cabbage before, but all in all it was just pretty much stirfried, probably in a big skillet with spices.
brisket was also really good!
The yummy smoke scent still lingers. Yum!!!! | comments: 5 comments or Leave a comment |
| | Just passed a new Jack in the Box slated to open on the Westside!!! It is on Alameda next to Golden Corral near Sunflower Market. It said the grand opening should be on June 19th. The building looks cool. Also an Il Vincino is slated to open near Sunflower as well. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| Anyone know if the Wing Stop on Montgomery and San Pedro is open yet? Also, are any of the other locations open? There's supposed to be one on Central SE, and one on Coors NW. I checked that one out, and I believe it's supposed to be in some shopping near I-40. I check the shopping centers around Coors and Quail and didn't see anything. Help?

Service - 9, darn nice and was very willing to please
Pricing - 8 Quite good, you both get lots, and its a good deal.
Quality - 8 Ive not had better bbq for long time, not the absolute best ive ever had, but real good!
Taste - 8 Brisket, and Chicken were smoked to perfection and nice and tender. saussages were a little boring.
Cleanliness - 9 Place is new, so that may be why it was so clean, but nicely painted, has a cute side room (when you first go in it kinda looks like it just has 3 tables!)
Decor/ambiance - Nice bright paint job, cool place, nice owner!
Style - Southern BBQ
Other comments/story/review - Dad and I dropped in, Got 2 of the 2 item dinners, 2 meats, 2 sides each, I got the chicken and the sausage, Dad got the ribs and the brisket, all in all all 4 meats were cooked to perfection, The chicken was perfect, nice and juicy, but fully well done, and lots of great flavor. Got the sides of collared greens, and corn on the cob. (corn was kinda mushy, i think it was from frozen) but everything else was great! Dad got the Rice and the Okra. both were great.
Conclusion - Great little place, I fear it may not do well due to its location, traffic kinda flies through, and those little stripmalls are often overlooked. but its worth the stop.
For the time being, you can use alibi bucks to get $10 worth of food for $5 cash. so go give them a try! http://alibi.com/index.php?scn=alibibucks | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| Anyone know what happened? It never quite managed to materialize.
I have the feeling that I might have already posted here asking about this, but I've had such a strange week that I'm really not sure... | comments: 7 comments or Leave a comment |
| On Menaul where the The Middle East Bakery was (just west of San Mateo, They moved in and opened up a little shop and lunch/dinner service(they were previosuly on Cuttler over across the street from compusa.
The menu is only about 5 items long(slowly growing), but its all organic, carefully prepared, kabobs, or other dishes over flavorful rice.
They are not super cheap for lunch, but not bad for dinner ($8-10, and if you get on their mailing list they send out deals that make them a pretty good deal (they are giving me a $2 off + soda for being from the neighborhood)
Ive had their Kabob Kubideh, moist and flavorful mix of spices and lean organic ground beef, served with rice and a roasted tomato. Ive had their Shish Kabob, lean steak grille don a stick, served with tomato and rice. And ive now had the Chicken Kabob, it was kinda tangy with spices and lemon juice, cooked to perfection and served as above.
The owner is very nice, she is a bit phobic of processed or un-natural things but what the heck her paranoia is probably better for me than the kid over at Wendys!

| Wow.
I got an email from the manager at Genghis Grill today -- and it was so very sweet and polite. As we had suspected, they were really slammed. Apparently they had five unexpected groups of seven.
He even offered to treat our group of seven *again*, so that we can have a great experience.
I have to say, I'm very impressed with the promptness and appropriateness of his response. I'd like to give GG a big thumbs up for an excellent response to an unhappy customer. | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |

1400 San Pedro Dr NE Albuquerque, NM 87110 (505) 255-4740
I've driven by this neighborhood favorite more than once, and have always been intrigued by it's possibilities. The building is done in a cold-war New England style that just screams, "TRY OUR PIES!" This afternoon I found myself wanting greasy-spoon, so I decided to give CM's a try.
Ordered: The Beef Fritter (Chicken-fried Steak on a Kaiser Roll) with Potato Salad and a Coffee. Service was quick and competent. The Chicken-Fried Steak was more Fry than Steak, and the bun pushed the entire affair into carb-overload. I felt like I was eating an entire loaf of Texas toast. The Potato Salad was dry and undercooked, and became only barely palatable after mixing it with ketchup. The coffee came in an over-sized terracotta mug (See below), which didn't make up for it's "Crayon melted in hot water" taste. I've had better cups of joe at Denny's! And the deal-breaker came when I looked at the deserts, and realized there was No Pie.
Rating: 1 out of 5. If you wanna impress the grandparents with a clean comfortable restaurant, you could do worse than Christy Mae's. But you're probably better-off at IHOP.

| | I had heard great things about Nob Hill Grill so 8 of us ate there last night. It was not a pleasant dining experience. The food was tolerable. Most of us agreed it was mediocre. I ordered the steak and it wasn't fit for eating. Very tough and I couldn't even cut it. I sent it back. The service was slow and the waiter wasn't attentive. He didn't even come back to ask if we needed more drinks or how our food was. I know it is a bar but if they are going to charge the prices that they do and call themselves a high end joint, I expect better service and exceptional food. | comments: 5 comments or Leave a comment |
