boat trips from Honolulu on a sail-type-boat?

Hi everybody.. My sister will be visiting in September, and she wants to take a short cruise on a boat that "actually has sails"... So not a power yacht or anything. Probably the smaller the better. Does anybody know of any little cruises like this that we could do? We would like a less than 2 hours trip, leaving from Honolulu, and (of course!) cheap (IE under $50, which i understand is probably not possible) We're flexible on length of trip, location (we can drive anywhere), and price (a little), so ANY ideas or suggestions of where to look would be great.

Thanks so much!!! :)

Kaua'i - Zodiac Rentals

Name: Cat
Age: 36
Location: Seattle, WA
Interests, Please: Travel, snorkeling, swimming
Have you been to Hawai'i? (if applicable): Yes --to Kaua'i
What do you like about Hawai'i? Everything! Especially the natural beauty.
What do you dislike about Hawai'i? Nothing!

I hope it is okay to ask a question about activities to do in Kaua'i.

The last time I was there (~10 years ago), I kayak'd the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto and it was beautiful. But, I'm older and less fit than I was back then, and I'm not really up for a five hour kayaking trip.

Does anyone know if you can rent a Zodiac boat and take that instead? I've done some web searches but haven't had much luck yet!

Any other general recommendations are welcome --restaurants, activities, etc.

Mahalo!

Hi! Cell phone service carrier question

Name: remix, a.k.a. remix79
Age: 28
Location: Portland, Oregon
Interests, Please: playing guitar and harmonica, hackeysack, board gaming, interactive fiction, reading, cycling...

Have you been to Hawai'i? (if applicable): Not yet.

What do you like about Hawai'i? Don't know yet. I'm coming there for business. Hopefully I will get some time off to explore a bit.

What do you dislike about Hawai'i? Um, vog? I'll know once I smell/see it.

I'm joining because I have a question and was unable to find the answer by browsing the journal or using LJ Seek.

How is the cell phone service in Hawai'i? I will be spending time around the Pearl Harbor memorial area and am wondering which carrier is best. Does Tracphone work well? Does the service vary from island to island or is it pretty even across the board?

Thank you. :)

Kamehameha Children's Chorus songs?

Aloha everyone! Lauena here. I was just wondering if anyone knew where to download songs from the Kamehameha children’s chorus? The chorus that sung “He Mel No Lilo” and “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” from Lilo and Stitch as well as “I Will Always Love you” in Lilo and Stitch 2? I really like their music and want to hear more of it. And if all anyone knows of is more CD’s from them, I’d be satisfied with the titles for those too. I already have a CD of Mark’s music and it is incredible! I LOVE it and it really helps if I have writer’s block.
Mahalo in advance for any ko kua anyone can give me.
Aloha for now!

Hello!

My name is Kelly and I'm a 23 year old Americorps member. My brother and his fiancee are getting married in Maui on October 15th (this fall!). It's all very last minute because of visa issues (his girlfriend is Indonesian) and I'm currently researching cheap hotels or even youth hostels near the northwest part of the island.

Given that I'm a paid volunteer, the $1000 flight from Boston will be enough of a problem. The other part is that his wedding is on a Wednesday so the family will likely be staying for most of that week (and with a flight that expensive, we might as well make a trip out of it!) Can anyone suggest cheap lodging options? If necessary, we can stay a little ways out and possibly rent a car (I'm not sure if that would be an option for me since I won't be 25 yet). Thanks!

All of the outdoorsy activities, snorkeling, body boarding, hiking, waterfalls... nature!! THe people were SO nice most everywhere we went, it was just an amazing experience. My husband wants to move there, and if we didn't have kids, I'd be up for dropping everything for a move RIGHT NOW!! At any rate, we're planning a month or two trip in two years with our five kids (as it will take us that long to save up) We plan on exploring via the internet and communities like this one to get mroe ideas of the best way to go and explore the island next time. W e're not really into the typical touristy thing and LOVED the mroe secluded places we found on the Big Island.

What do you dislike about Hawai'i? The plan ride from here:( And the vog was frusttrating on some days because I really wanted more VIEW of the gorgeous countryside... it was still a wodnerful trip, though!

Hawaiian singing - male falsetto

When I was in Hawaii a few years ago, my hotel had a hawaiian singer singing beautiful haunting melodies; very strange sounding to me. He was singing in falsetto, I believe. Can anyone tell me what that type of singing is called, or point me to an artist they think it could be? I would love to hear it again. Here is a link to a music site where there seems to be a great selection of hawaiian music, with sound clips. But I can't seem to locate this type of music.
Thanks.

Pegge Hopper info

This is probably a longshot, but I can't find info anywhere else, so...

I have a Pegge Hopper print, looks like it's on linen, and I'm trying to find some info about it (title, date produced, etc). Her website has little to no information about her past works . I'm guessing it's from the early 80s. Anybody know where I can find some information about her older pieces? Maybe a catalog of some sort? I can't find anything on the net.
Thanks!

mahalo hawaii rabies quarantine

just want to let everyone know that the staff of the hawaii rabies quarantine facility ROCKS.
they have been so helpful in my journey on getting my animals to our future home. when i have been unclear about things regarding the brochure- they have answered my questions. when i have been stressed about the process, they have calmed me down.
they are so nice!
why this came about? i was unclear about some things since we are on a delay in our move ( we were suppose to leave in jan) and the dogs rabies shots are due again. i was stressed about having to redo the process all over again, however found out if i get the shots NOW before they are due they still qualify for direct release. YES! i am a happy mommy!

edit:
http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/info
information to ship your cats and dogs- downloadable brochure

http://hawaii.gov/hdoa
general information

government Auctions

Hi, just wanted to introduce myself. Have been lurking for a few weeks, but this is my first post.
I live in HI.
I love the weather and the mix of different cultures.
I hate the high cost of living.
This might be a long shot, but I wanted to know if anyone knew when the next government auction on Oahu would be, or how to find that information? While watching the 10pm news on Sat, there was a story about an auction that happens twice a year. And the next one is in May, but they didn't say when. Any help would be appreciated.

Some questions about Kauai

Aloha. I grew up on the Big Island and then spent the rest of time on Oahu. I've never been to the other islands - I'll make it there one day. So these questions are actually from a friend of a friend that is coming to Kauai. Anyones assistance would be so lovely.!
Mahalo!

"I am taking my vacation in Hawaii this year. Kauai to be exact. So here are my questions... Should I rent a car? What are the transportation options like? Bus, cab? What about the weather, I saw a show on the travel channel that said they have all different climates. I thought it was sunny warm. We are going the last week in April into May. What are the must see or do things on Kauai? What are tourist traps to be avoided? Do you have a favorite restaurant?"

Taking a trip to Hawai'i

Name: Susan

Age: 33

Location: St. Cloud, MN

Interests, Please: Warm sun, no snow. That's my main interest of late.

Have you been to Hawai'i? (if applicable): No, never!

What do you like about Hawai'i? It's warm, it's beautiful, the culture, lots of Buddha statues and tiki dudes, flowers, whales, Hawaiian cows, flowers, and um, everything really.

What do you dislike about Hawai'i? That I'm not there right now! It's 12 below zero here. Plus, I'm not looking forward to the 10 hour plane ride.

I'm taking a trip to Hawaii soon, as you can see, and I am super-excited about it! I'm going with some friends and family, and we'll be visiting Oahu and Maui for a week. We're cramming as much stuff as possible into our trip, while still leaving some free time to explore things on our own. I thought maybe I could post some of our plans here and get some tips or opinions from the locals or those that have been there/done that. I'm cool with a certain level of cheesy tourist stuff, but I would like to explore the history and culture of Hawaii. The "real" Hawaii, if you will.

Here's the itinerary, from what I understand it (I didn't do all the planning). First, we're going to Oahu after two (hopefully only two, and on time) long flights. We're staying in this hotel in Waikiki. On the second day we're going on a tour of Pearl Harbor. We'll be spending the next day at the Polynesian Cultural Center. I'm curious about that one - is it really a cultural center, or is it more of a corny tourist thing? We're taking the bus or cabs on Oahu, so I'm hoping those are easy to figure out.

After that we're flying to Maui. In Maui, we'll be staying at Kaanapali Beach Hotel and renting a van. Then we're taking a boat to go whale watching. We're also going to the Old Lahaina Luau, taking a helicoptor tour, and seeing 'Ulalena, which is some sort of Hawaiian Cirque du Soleil thing, I guess.

We're going to be staying near the Jodo Mission in Maui, where the big Buddha statue is. The giant banyan tree is in the neighborhood too.

Two things that restrict my travel somewhat is that I use a wheelchair, and I'm a vegetarian. So, recommending surfing or steakhouses isn't going to help me, but if you have anything to recommend with that in mind, I welcome your suggestions. Thanks!

Name: nikki

Age: 36

Location: Boulder, CO

Interests, Please: stay-at-home-mother, previously in medical school, knitting, dogs, twins

Have you been to Hawai'i? (if applicable): yes, once, on vacation, around 1993, to Maui

What do you like about Hawai'i? weather, sense of community, general nice attitude of locals

What do you dislike about Hawai'i? not sure. see below.

Hello all. I just joined for a very specific reason. We're considering moving to Hawai'i, but there are some things we're not getting information about, as it's difficult to weed through the massive volume of information on the web. We want to talk to people from the islands.

In reading past posts, I've seen many "moving there soon" posts, but not one of them was from a family with children, and everyone wants to move to the beach. We have twin toddlers and really want to move to Kula, on Maui. Do any of you have information about Kula?? Anyone from there??

One of our concerns is that being farther away, and a requisite plane trip from relatives, we're not sure if they'll visit as often as they do now. Do any of you have relatives on the mainland? What are your experiences with visitation of said relatives?

I understand that some Hawai'ians (sp?) are concerned with mainlanders with money moving in and changing the economic landscape of Hawai'i. I grew up in a tourist town, here in Colorado, and I totally relate to the concept of not caring much for tourists and people moving in and calling themselves "locals". How can we move to Hawai'i and not be one of those "foreigners"? I want to learn the language, and the information provided by the mod will definitely help with that. Is there anything else we can do to ease our transition and acceptance by locals? Am I just being too weird about it?

We have twins and I am the President of our local twins club. I have only found one twins club in Hawai'i, and it's on O'ahu. Is it difficult to get back and forth to the other islands for a simple 2-3 hour meeting? I'm not sure it would be worth it to start a new club on Maui, seeing that Hawai'i has the lowest incidence of twinning in the US. So I would just need to get over to O'ahu on a regular basis. Anyone else here have twins in Hawai'i??

Ok, I guess that's it for now. Any help is much appreciated and I thank you in advance for anything you can tell me.
