I'm doing soem research into abortion and was wondering if you could offer me your views. I'm very sorry
if anyone finds this offensive or inappropriate, I think it fits in with the community guidelines, if it doesn't
I can only apologise and delete the post.
If you have time, please could you fill this questionaire out?

What religion are you?

Are you pro life or pro choice?

Why are you pro life/ pro choice?

What has influenced your views on the topic?

What do you think of the law in GB? (women are permitted to have an abortion upto 24 weeks in pregnancy unless in special medical cases when later terminations are permitted)

If you became pregnant (or you got you girlfriend pregnant) would abortion be an option to consider and how would you feel?

In you opinion, is it better to have a disabled/ disfigured etc. child with a syndrome recognised in pregnancy or to have an abortion?

In your opinion, is it better to have an unwanted child or an abortion?

Have you any other comments to offer?

Thank you very much.

Hi! I just joined as I was asked to post the following story about a woman being refused the morning-after pill by a pharmacist on moral grounds. I was really shocked to hear about it, as I thought this sort of thing only happened in the States.

I was also pointed to another couple of stories along similar lines, both in the UK, that I hadn't heard of before:

Interesting article on legal attacks by pro-lifers in this country in the context of 'saviour siblings'.

"The combined effect of these challenges is that the law regulating reproductive medicine seems to be consistently under attack from pro-life groups and individuals and far less frequently challenged by those who believe it insufficiently permissive or liberal. "

Hello all. Not posted before but have visited.

Im 19 and went through my medical termination on the 25th of March. I have had time to adjust but am still a little sad about it. My main concern now is that I am still yet to have a period since. As much as im sure I can't be pregnant again, it has got to the stage where I am considering it for piece of mind.

Does anybody who has been through this have any advice on what I can expect? Namely, when it is I can expect to have another period.

Party leaders on abortion [03 May 2005|08:32am]

[ mood | contemplative ]

As well as the small amounts of information that we've been able to get from the mainstream media two womens magazines got the views of the party leaders on female issues. Putting all the information together it's clear that both Charles Kennedy and Michael Howard are very much in favour of reducing the upper limit on abortion, although Michael Howard gives the impression that he would like to go much lower than 20 weeks for the new limit. Tony Blair gives a vague and non-commital response by saying that he doesn't think that abortion is an election issue but he goes on to say that there is a debate on the topic because of scientific and medical advances in recent years. Personally, I read that as saying that he too would support reducing the upper limit, the only difference is that he's not going on record telling us how low he would like to see it go. It makes it difficult to know who to vote for doesn't it?

Right, well - results of the commenting poll are in, & a big part of me is sad to say that...

10 voted to disable anonymous commenting
3 voted to keep it

So, I guess I'll head over to the settings & disable the feature. I held off in the hopes there was a way to screen the anonymous comments which meant only I saw them, but unfortunately the only way to do this meant that the author of the post would also be able to see them, which kind of defeats the purpose. Its a shame that one idiot caused enough damage for this to have to happen. I will say for future reference though, that you can make your entries friends only (meaning only community members can read them) if you wish to keep your situation a little more private.

My story [14 Apr 2005|02:37pm]

Hey everyone. I've just joined this community and thought I'd share the story of my abortion.

I had a medical termination about 2 years ago. I had no doubt that it was what I wanted, as soon as I found out I was pregnant aged 19 I freaked out and knew straight away that I wanted to have an abortion. My body, my choice. The medical termination procedure involved me taking 2 pills and I had to go to the hospital three times, once for my initial appointment, then for taking the first pill, then for the second pill and actual abortion. I can't remember everything all he exact details but here is my story. Hopefully it might be of help to someone.

My story )

Sorry this is a bit of a ramble. If you have any questions about the procedure or my own experience I'll be happy to try and answer them.

I recently discovered a site called Women's Health. I took a peep and thought it was very good. They not only deal with abortion but here is their mission statement:

Women's Health provides health information on gynaecological health issues such as heavy bleeding, fibroids, hysterectomy, the menopause and HRT, pelvic inflammatory disease and ovarian problems.

Women's Health is a national voluntary organisation and is independent of the NHS and private companies. Our services include a helpline and a series of health information booklets, many of which you can find on this website. We also provide a reference library and a self help support network.

We support and promote every woman's right to make her own informed choices about her health.

This is their publication on unplanned pregnancy and abortion care

It's pretty comprehensive, and includes information in obtaining an abortion on the NHS, and also gives links to Marie Stopes and BPAS. It also gives information on chlamydia screening, and rhesus information. Also included is aftercare advice, and doesn't provide links to any anti-choice organisations.

The website also includes information on:

* Cervical smear screening

* Heavy bleeding

* Vulval pain and discomfort

The organisation also lists a helpline on: 0845 125 5254 Monday-Friday 9:30 am - 1:30 pm. They make a point that all their calls are answered by women.

Thumbs up from me, maybe we could include it in the user info along with other useful links that people find along then way?

For pretty much the first time ever since I started this community over a year ago, its been brought to my attention that some pathetic "person" has left an anonymous comment insulting someone who posted here.

Now, I have never disabled this feature as I felt that it was best to give those too scared/upset/etc to share their situation or ask for help in any form but anonymously a way to do that.

This community is very open & welcoming, & I guess that is the reason that no one has ever needed to use that option, & it saddens me that one mindless idiot who was too cowardly & ashamed of their opinion that they had to do this is making some people feel unsafe in this community.

I can't make the decision to disable the option or not by myself, so I'm putting it to a poll:

Hi again.

I wanted to find out how long after an abortion a person should expect to wait to start a period again?

My abortion was on 28th Jan, I bled afterwards for approximately 3-4 weeks, and since then, nothing. I thought that my normal period would have started by now? I am just a little concerned. Any advice would be apprecieted.

Thanks.

Durex tries to trace fake condoms
Boxes of fake condoms have been discovered in UK pharmacies and shops leading to a major product re-call.

The bogus condoms - which are 10 times more unreliable than the international standard - have appeared in fake Durex packaging.

Thousands of the "convincing" counterfeits were first discovered in the Republic of Ireland and reported by the Irish Medicines Board.

Three complaints were made in England about empty foil packets and the remaining condoms in these boxes were tested and found to be fake.

Durex launched a nationwide appeal to track down the risky prophylactics.

Chris Bunniss, marketing director of Durex, said it was thought that the condoms had come from China.

"They are a very good match," he said. "The condoms are sub-standard but the packaging is very convincing. We believe they originated in China and whoever is doing this is ripping us off."

The counterfeit condoms were tested and found to have more holes than the international standard allows. "This means they won't do what a condom should - guard against sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy," said Mr Bunniss.

Certain batches of Durex condoms have been re-called including Durex Extra Safe 12 pack batch number 20602503 and Durex Fetherlite 12 pack batch number VR3073C.

One way of spotting the fakes is the poor printing quality on the boxes. The letter "C" at the end of the serial number looks like an "E" or an Euro sign. On the condom foil itself, the batch number is printed as VR3073 followed by a "U".

Political Views [17 Mar 2005|12:29pm]

seemiddieshrink
Someone was asking about political party's abortion views? This is just what I heard on the news, I don't have any linkage to share & its a bit thin, but to give you a general idea:

- Conservative's Michael Howard wants the limit brought down to 20 weeks
- Labour's Tony Blair does not see abortion as a political issue, but as a moral one, so does not hold a party view. Pretty good for a staunch Catholic, methinks.

They didn't mention LibDems...which is a pity as they're my party of choice & I'd like to be sure I'm not voting for a party who want to lessen our choice. Does anyone have anything more concrete?

Hey, I'm a new member and I have a question about escorting at clinics.

I know there are many opportunities to escort at clinics in the US since there are more protesters over there. I was wondering if there are any organisations or clinics who need volunteer escorts in Glasgow. Do Brook Advisory Centres use volunteer escorts? Thanks!

Hi..:)

I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of the Conserative Parties views on Abortion.

Like an idiot, I went to Channel Five's website and posted a question to Michael Howard about abortion, and since channel 5 called me up asking me about my question I realised that I know very little about that Parties views... and if I want to get on and ASK that question, I should know more...

Any ideas? Links to websites? Anything like that?

Thank you

Christian Voice have a website (yes, the same Christian Voice that are going to start targeting British abortion clinics) (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1501029,00.html)

One of their gems include:

The Hindu religion is not of God but is a manifestation of Satan

Anyway, I think some of us should let them know what a good job they're doing - phone call, email, letter with newspaper cuttings soaked in goats blood, whatever :D

Hi again [26 Feb 2005|12:28pm]

absinthecity
[ mood | stressed ]

Not been around here much as I've been feeling a lot better with regards to "it", and it can be a bit like opening old wounds, but I just wanted to ask a question or two about work issues/how much/what you told colleagues etc.

I'm lucky enough to have a boss who I'm quite close to so I told him more or less exactly what was up with me. I don't really know who else at work found out or what they knew - I did tell one or two less close colleagues that I'd had a miscarriage as it seemed easier at the time, although now I feel a bit daft for that and worry that it confused matters.

Anyway, my actual colleagues aren't a big problem - the real issue is other client-level people I was dealing with around that time. I'm a journalist, so deal with a lot of random people who I'm writing about. One of these in particular has been causing me a lot of grief lately, because just before I found out I was pregnant I had promised to write an article about her. This was possibly a big deal for her - I don't know - but it was never going to be a major feature and I didn't feel it was worth pursuing when I had (a) the stress of the pregnancy going on and (b) two other jobs to juggle. It was very low priority.

But now this woman is bombarding me with text messages and emails saying "what happened?" and I've so far responded by explaining I got ill after we met and that I've since been taken off that title. Despite this she does not seem to have got the message and continues to send me messages that make me feel really guilty.

What would you guys suggest? This is partly a work balance issue, as the crisis did make me realise I had taken on too much and because I was so busy with three roles, was not really "insured" against any potential life traumas.

Should I just tell this woman what happened, that I was and still am very stressed, and don't need this? Is an abortion generally considered enough of a stress factor to mess with work like this? I'm scared of looking like a slacker, and it also doesn't help that this woman has just had a baby and I know she's very much of the "don't let it get in the way of your work" school of thought. Help!?

Ok, wrong paper! The Times instead:

Radical Christians to target abortion clinics
By Laura Peek and James Doran in New York

A MILITANT evangelical Christian group plans to target pregnant women and medical staff at abortion clinics as it steps up its campaign against what it calls a tidal wave of filth, The Times has learnt.
An MP will make a written statement to the House of Commons next week calling on the Home Secretary to investigate the activities of Christian Voice, which shot to prominence with its campaign against Jerry Springer — The Opera. Adopting the tactics of American fundamentalist Christians, the group pickets buildings and posts the home addresses and phone numbers of its targets on the internet.

Last week, a cancer charity turned down a £3,000 donation from the show after Christian Voice threatened to picket its clinics if it accepted “tainted” money from the show.

Abortions in Britain have reached a record level. In 2003, the total number of abortions was 181,600, compared with 175,900 in 2002, a rise of 3.2 per cent. The number of girls aged 14 and under having abortions is above 1,000 a year.

The group, led by Stephen Green, gained notoriety when it circulated the home addresses and telephone numbers of senior BBC figures when the musical was screened on BBC Two last month. Some people on the list received calls threatening them with bloodshed.

Mr Green, 53, told The Times last night that his next target is abortion clinics. “The taking of innocent blood brings judgment on our land and cries to Heaven for vengeance,” he said. “The presence of abortion centres in our towns is iniquitous. They should be shut down. It would not take much: just a few prayer vigils outside clinics.”

John Cryer, the Labour MP for Hornchurch, is composing a written statement to the House calling for Charles Clarke to investigate Christian Voice. “They will be targeting women who are already in a vulnerable state, nervous and afraid with all sorts of problems, and making their lives even worse,” he said.

During questions on Commons business last week, Mr Cryer described members of Christian Voice as fundamentalist thugs for “strong-arming” the small cancer charity Maggie’s Centres into refusing a donation from Jerry Springer.

Abortion clinics said last night that they feared a rise in US-style anti-abortion tactics and are being especially vigilant. Marie Stopes said that small groups of protesters already picket some of its clinics, blocking pregnant women as they attempt to enter and thrusting leaflets into their hands. “They stand outside with posters and rosary beads,” a spokesman said. “Members of staff sometimes have to escort the women into the clinics.”

In America clinics have been firebombed and since 1991 three doctors and four members of clinic staff have been murdered. Neal Horsley, the American anti-abortionist, who posted photographs of murdered abortion doctors on the web with a red line through their faces, told The Times that he has links with groups in Britain, but refused to name them.

Mr Horsley, a convicted marijuana dealer, former member of the US Air force and Presbyterian minister, believes that the Ten Commandments justify murder to prevent the death of unborn children. “I wouldn’t do it myself, but if I was on a jury in a trial of someone who had killed one of these doctors I would acquit him,” he said.

Photographs of women visiting abortion clinics have been posted on American websites, which label them as homicidal mothers who must be held up for the world to see.

Mainstream Christian groups distanced themselves from Christian Voice, which also lobbies against homosexuality and is preparing to launch a campaign against sex education in schools. Mr Green, the author of a virulently anti-gay book called The Sexual Dead End, said: “Homosexuality is a pathology, an emotional or psychological disorder. It is a very sad thing but it is something you can get over.

“It was a bad day when they let homosexuals in the Armed Forces. People there do not want to be objects of sexual attention from blokes they are sharing a trench or tent with.”

He added: “It was an even worse day when they let women on the front line. They should be in the home. The man should be the leader in the family and the woman should be the daughter or wife under the authority of her father and then her husband.”

Mr Green is married, has four grown-up children and lives on a smallholding in Carmarthen, South Wales. He claims that Hindus are wicked and Said: “We would like to reach out to Muslims and tell them they cannot find salvation in a dead Prophet.”

He converted to Christianity when he married his wife, Caroline, in 1981, and set up Christian Voice in 1994, but became a full-time activist 15 months ago. Mr Green told The Times that he is not sure why he feels so strongly: “Perhaps the Lord thinks I have got a certain gift. With all the hate mail I have been getting, I am obviously rattling Satan’s cage.”

Great, just great.

The Guardian (26/2/2005) [25 Feb 2005|11:05pm]

[ mood | determined ]

I wasn't really paying too much attention to the news this evening, but they were doing a run down of tomorrow's papers, and it mentioned something in The Guardian about Christian groups targeting UK abortion clinics. I'll be buying the paper tomorrow, and will link or copy the article up on here, but it might be of interest to people here.

On a slightly more amusing note, our clinic was shut today because of staff training. No one (including our postman!) mentioned that to the two protesters outside. They must have thought their 'Abortion kills babies' sign was having some effect as no one was coming in! After trying to withstand the snow, they upped and left pretty quickly.

Also, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a 'naming and shaming' of centres in the UK which pretend to give impartial abortion advice but actually turn out to be anti-choice groups. I'm going to have a trawl through the yellow pages at the weekend to get some names and numbers, and then will call the places up - they usually give themselves away pretty quickly with statements such as 'have you considered adoption' and 'many women suffer severe depression after their abortion'. We could always put it in as a FAQ/memories section, and pass on the link to discussion forums etc if anyone is looking for abortion support.

:)
