Bannack Ghost Town, Montana

This weekend my boyfriend and I travelled to the ghost towns around here. Bannack is a big, decently preserved ghost town in Montana that has an interesting history. It hit its prime in 1863 and its sheriff was also the leader of a gang of murderers and robbers (to briefly sum it up). I got some nice photos for my first post to the community. :) Enjoy.

Gunkanjima-island is formally called as "Hashima island", which places takashima-cho, Nagasaki prefecture. It was only small reef, but it had developed for mining coal since 1870's. Its population was 5,000 at peak, and they built many high apartment. Thus it looked like a warship, so we call this island "Gunkanjima"(warship island). However it was closed at 1974, and it changed ruins now.

The Exterior of the Blakely House - Ora SC

This picture set features the exterior of the Blakely House in Ora SC. Ora is a small town on the outskirts of Laurens SC. The community was a thriving farming community until an agricultural depression just prior to the Great Depression of 1929. The events of the 1930s forced many farmers to sell their land and leave for the city. The age of prosperous farmers ended and many buildings fell into disuse.

The Blakely house was once a grand house with electricity, gas heat and wonderful wood work. A set of french windows makes the now ruined building stand out from the remaining multi story farming houses in the area. This blog entry focuses on the exterior features of the house. A future blog entry will feature the equally grand and ruined interior.

All 97 pictures of the Blakely House are in this flickr set.

The area around Greer SC used to be farmland. Now an airport and car maker have made obsolete a former farm house and barn. In time the land will be cleared for industry or a new housing division... the march of progress.

All 60 pictures of this location are in this flickr set. There are more pictures of the barn and outside pictures of the house.

Clinton SC Farm House - The House

Sometimes it pays to investigate locations that seem less than promising. On 01/04 I drove to Clinton SC to photograph an abandoned two story apartment house. I was detoured and investigated a grain silo I had seen outside of Clinton for many years. The structure was clearly abandoned from both its state and the vegetation surrounding the building. A "For Sale" sign by the road announced that I could look at the house with the reason of possibly purchasing it... right! The clearly dilapidated and marginally intact structure promised some great pictures. I was right. The house has been partially salvaged with flooring both upstairs and downstairs. One of the rear rooms had completely collapsed, leaving a gapping space in the structure. The stairs were blocked with ceiling or floor debris. Fortunately a makeshift ladder provided me access to the upper floor. The partially blocked stairs were solid enough, so up I went. The upstairs revealed two front rooms without flooring. A hallway at the rear of the second floor overlooked the ruined room. A gabled closet off of the hallway revealed a small stack of beer bottles. The house had been clearly used for a bit of partying. One of the front rooms revealed that somebody had managed to live in a room with no flooring and missing windows. Plastic had been put up on the window openings and a board across the floor beams supported a sleeping platform. All and all this was an amazing property.

I did investigate the remainder of the property and found two metal silos and a large concrete silo. I will feature these and a ruined concrete structure in another blog. All 142 pictures of the location are in this flickr set.

Abandoned Farm Ancillary Buildings on SC Hwy 81

On 12/29 my mate and I stopped to view an abandoned barn on South Carolina Hwy 81 outside of Anderson. We walked the property and found the ruins of a large two-story house, now burned to the ground with only the side chimneys prominent in the invading vegetation. This blog entry focuses on the ancillary buildings that were also found. They all had echoes of the past, with present day interlopers left to ponder the relics left behind. The Bottle House had dozens of cider type bottles under the collapsed structure. Did the people drink that much cider or was there another use? The open shed had something looked like a fire pit, but there were no ashes and the construction did not make sense. These mysteries are one of the things I like about exploring and documenting abandoned locations.

All 129 pictures of the location are in this flickr set.

These were taken just slightly over a year ago, in Door County, Wisconsin. These buildings were used to house German prisoners-of-war during WWII, and were later used to house migrant workers who worked in the apple and cherry orchards. They have long since fallen into disrepair.

Aloha! Been watching this community for a while, but I didn't have anything to contribute (as I hadn't gone exploring in a while).

Anywho, this one's just a simple farm close to where I live. I apologize I couldn't get more photos of the interior of the barn - was far too dark. There was a basement, but it was really disgusting, so we passed on exploring that part of the house.

Also, I've been out of practice for a few years, so forgive the odd framing here and there.

Enjoy!

The lovely pictures posted of Mesa Verde reminded me of the pictures that my husband took while we were riding through the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument:) First, if you've never been there add it to your list of places to go. It's one of the most hauntingly beautiful places that I've ever been.

Second, to the pictures. According to what I remember of the little sign they had posted, these little house things were build by some women in the 30's who decided that this is where she wanted to live.

Hope you liked it!:)

Not very many pictures, and this is my first actual post! It's on the way to Hawks Nest State Park, which is one of the best places in West Virginia to experience nature at its finest.

The last time I went here, the water mill still had the old wheel, unfortunately this appears to have vanished now, but it still is beautiful, to me. I couldn't find a way inside though without trying to go through the water!

Portsmouth, Ohio: Part 1- The Stone Stable

This is my first post and I'm not really a photographer.

I was inspired by this community so my husband J and I decided to run out and get photos of what we thought was an old jail in downtown Portsmouth,Ohio. When we were finished, we came back home and I set the photos to my mom and according to her, what I thought was a jail wasn't a jail. It's actually an old stable for mules and horses built back in the 1800's. While we were there, we noticed a really neat old building that we sadly couldn't get into because the only entrance had recently been sealed up with cinder blocks. BUT, I found a hole to take pics through. We have no idea what the building might be, but I'll be posting photos of it in part 2 and maybe some of you can help me figure it out. Enjoy!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
The 2 buildings we looked at. The stable is in the foreground and heavily covered with vines. The second building is the super tall one in the background. To give you a point of reference, the wall that you see directly below the back of the tall building is a floodwall which stands about 20 feet high.

Site 1 - The Stone Stable )

In part 2, I'll show you the few pics I was able to get of the really tall building. Bye!!
