Abandoned Places - The Salton Sea thru a child's eyes
Back in January, we conducted our second SoCal Abandoned trip. The target for this trip was the Salton Sea and the abandoned resorts and communities around the north and east side of the water. While I've been woefully slow in processing and posting my images, I have uploaded my son's photos from in and around the North Shore Yacht Club and the Bombay Beach ruins. Did I mention, Chris is 8?

My photos will start coming out this week from that trip

Indeed he does. What kind of camera is he using?

His sister gave him her old Kodak 5.1 M-pixel EasyShare digital camera at Yule. It's got a good zoom and nice clarity (when he remembers to clean the lens :).

The Kodak EasyShare's are pretty decent... my daughter (just turned 12) has one, though she has a bad habit of leaving it in the worst places (usually on the floor). I need to get her a bag to store/carry it in so maybe she will remember to take it along and use it more often.

He's gotten very very good at keeping it in the belt case that I'd gotten to got with it. The camera is now also attached to a long lanyard so he doesn't drop it (much). His only problem is occassionally forgetting to have me download it or failing to get fresh batteries.

The buried slide is great. It took a second to register, and then, damn! Good shot, Chris.

Heh heh heh, he got to photograph it then play on it. I'm always pleased with the unusual perspectives he sees.

:) The good thing is that the area didn't smell too much of dead fish. The Salton is well known for large fish kills and horribly smells.

Oh I like the smell of dead fish, don't ask. I'm weird. . . Fish markets are my favorite.

I'm trying to keep in interested and keep it fun for him. I'm certainly hoping he'll stay interested and excited about his photography. His sister was shooting that day as well, but she posts her photos just to her Deviant Art account.

The playground and the fish! Very disturbing clarity with the fish (what is going on there anyhow?).... only until this year have I come to learn about the Salton Sea after seeing some pictures in this group (am canadian eh)

It is quite a thing to see the sand eating up a playground you can still imagine children playing in.

It looks as though someone had caught the fish and was getting ready to carry them out (string through the eyes / heads), then changed their minds. There's a large number of migrant encampments in the hills overlooking the Salton. My guess is someone interupted the fisherman or they were told the fish were contaminated.

The playground there was very surreal in how good a shape it was in versus nearly being buried.

Sadly, no we didn't make it thru there. It was a 3.5 hour drive for me to swing thru LA, pick up one person and then get to the meet-up site. We spent close to 5 hours in the three areas we explored and photographed. Given that, we kinda ran out of time and even more importantly daylight.
