Abandoned city on Japan island.
Gunkanjima-island is formally called as "Hashima island", which places takashima-cho, Nagasaki prefecture. It was only small reef, but it had developed for mining coal since 1870's. Its population was 5,000 at peak, and they built many high apartment. Thus it looked like a warship, so we call this island "Gunkanjima"(warship island). However it was closed at 1974, and it changed ruins now.

I have a feeling I've posted this here already, but it's worth mentioning again I suppose - I received this in an email from Nagasaki City Hall last year:

Thank for your email regarding Gunkanjima.

Currently we do not give permission to people to take photos/films of Gunkanjima. However, work is underway to make a pier and designated walking route on the island by mid 2008 when the public will be allowed to visit.

We have given permission to ferry companies to run tours from April 2008 to the island but this is very much still in the making and the finer details still need to be determined.

The cost of tours, which will include transport to Gunkanjima, will be set by the ferry companies.

I can't wait for the endless rows of vending machines and the newest Hello Kitty Gunkanjima cellphone accessories.

I have always wondered why travel here was forbidden. Deserting it seems so odd to me, even with the decline of the coal mines.
