Cherry Knowle (Sunderland Asylum) and St. Mary's (Gateshead Asylum) - UK - March '08.

This was only one of the buildings. We walked around for over an hour, as there were so many different outhouses and places to explore.

I liked the strange lozenge-shaped windows. It's not something I think I've seen before.

Inside, the wallpaper was peeling and showered the floor like confetti.

Close up, it looked even stranger.

I'm not sure that sticker was originally part of the furniture.

Blue after blue after blue, and a hole where the roof had fallen in.

Towards some outhouses, this was on the ground. I really wanted to cover the 'Ve' so it said 'Danger Reversing' but I thought that would be cheating.

On the way, we found a chapel. The door was locked, but we walked around the outside. I thought the windows were beautiful, and the stone almost looked like steel.

Damn padlocks. I don't believe in criminal damage, so we moved onto the next building.

A single room made up what looked like it used to be an office. This was here, and I like finding things like this. It makes you wonder if it was left deliberately, or for a reason, if someone felt strongly about her, or whether it was to mark the date the room was abandoned.

Some garages were next to the office. Aside from the broken wood and litter, there was one solitary sign of any human life, a single blue cup on a shelf, thick with inches of dust.

My favourite part of the garages. If I could have stolen this, I might have done. The cupboards were bare, alas.

This was attached to the wall on the outside of the building. I can only deduce that it was a pump or gauge of some sort. I thought it was strangely pretty.

A stairwell leading down to a cellar, You can't tell, but the black expanse at the bottom is actually water. The cellar appeared to be totally flooded, but another door could be seen at the bottom of the stairs. I'd wanted to go down it anyway, the water seemed to be very deep, so it was left well alone.

The mortuary. I imagine these tables were for storing the bodies prior to, or post autopsy, as there was an extractor fan in the room. This was destined never to come out amazingly, as the room was very small and it was PITCH BLACK (and creepy) so I was relying on a flash. Even now, I'm trying not to wonder what the stain is. :/

I first saw this through a keyhole, as the door into the room it was in was locked. Then I went outside, and found that the window into said room was smashed in and you could see totally inside that way. Thus, autopsy table.

Another of the autopsy table. They're not the best, as I was taking these leaning through a window as opposed to being in the room itself, but I like the colours, the white, the silver, and the blue of the far window, and the ivy snaking up it.

This was the staff social club. I took this through a pane of dusty, cobwebbed glass, because the doorway was nailed shut and we couldn't get in. There's no camera trickery on this, but the effect was altogether bizarre. The sunlight was SO strong at the back of the building, and I didn't realise the rays would come through in the way they did. I think it was a combination of the light, the dust in the air, and the glass I took it through, but the whole effect is rather surreal, and the plants in the back almost seem to be glowing. That said, I do like the picture, even if digital camera noise doesn't do it many favours. It's the loneliest chair in the world. Emo-tear. :(

On the floor of the social club. Who were they? Where are they now? It made me think.

An imposing tower loomed over the site. I believe it's a water tower, but I'm not sure.

A gazebo in the middle of nowhere. It seems like everything in this place was blue.

Broken legs?

Who sat here last? What did they talk about? Did they even know they where they were? The seats faced the forest, and you couldn't really see the horizon. Walking around this place did have an affect on me, emotionally.

Who broke this? How? What small piece of conscience led them to stand it up, straight and tall, rather than leave it lying? I found it kinda beautiful.

The metal arch above the main entrance. It was getting late by this point, so we decided to call it a day.

The wind was insanely strong, and the curtains were flinging themselves out of windows.

Obligatory black and white shot.

More curtains.

Glass.

An abandoned file, on a windowledge. I didn't place the leaves, either. They were just there, as if it was waiting to be photographed.

The vandalism at Cherry Knowle is horrendous. I don't think there's one window that isn't like this.

Dials. No idea what these were for, but I liked how they looked.

Bulb. Practically the only light in the entire place we found that wasn't smashed.

Gate of ribbons. Not sure how they expect that to stop people, but...

Inside an outdoor generator room.

The entrance to (I believe) the Admin block.

"Do not despair, trust in God"

I can't say enough about how much I love these photos. Particularly the shot of the chapel, the staff social room, and pretty much every exterior vertical shot of the buildings. Fabulous.

Thank you so much. ♥ This was my first explore (as proved by my wearing totally inappropriate clothing, and getting covered in mud, asbestos dust, grass stains, and scratched to hell by thorns) but I was pleased with the way a lot of these came out. :)

I'm hoping to get inside both the buildings next time, and I'll post some more shots, if I do.

these photos are just so incredible, thanks SO MUCH for sharing them!

that autopsy table sends shivers down my spine...

and the shot of the chapel reminds me so much of The Vannacutt Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane (the asylum in House on Haunted Hill)

Excellent images! I have recently done some exploring in both asylums... although we didn't get past the morgue in St.Marys unfortunatly. I adore Cherry Knowle :]

Thank you. :) Have you posted pictures anywhere? I'm always curious to see anyone else's.

I think we got lucky (as much as vandalism is lucky) with the morgue, as someone had kicked the door in to the main building where the room with the three tables were, so we could just walk straight in. The room with the autopsy table in, as I said, just had the window completely missing, so I just poked my head through it. They'll probably board that up soon, which is a shame, since it's the only way to see that room, since the door to it is locked tight. It's definitely worth going back to, I think, as I felt like I didn't get to explore as much as I would have liked.

I want to go back to CK, too, if only to get inside this time. I couldn't find a way at all, apart from climbing through one window, but it was about eight feet off the ground and I didn't fancy my chances. :(

Ah that's cool :] I have very few images as I was modelling for the photographers the majourity of the time...

I might post a few when I get home later, I'm in college at the moment.

Take care

Amazing shots of a stunning place. I have made the trip twice from the west coast. It is worth the drive. Did you not bump into security? There was a big guy with a front tooth missing when I got caught. He looked like he could quite easily crush your windpipe out of your throat, was pretty cool to us though. I never found the Morgue yet!

At Cherry Knowle, we got accosted by security, but it was a rather laughable experience. We were outside, chatting to an old guy walking his dog, and the guard came up in his bright yellow jacket, with an air of self-importance, and honestly, I could have squashed him by sitting on him. He was TINY, really skinny build and diminutive stature. He told us it was private land and that we knew we shouldn't be here, we said we were leaving, and he just left. He didn't bother us again after that.

If you meant St. Mary's, I have no IDEA what happened, or how we got so lucky. We went in from round the back, so avoiding walking past the security house, but despite the signs everywhere, we walked freely all around the grounds, and never saw a SOUL. It was about 3-5 in the afternoon on a Saturday, and I don't know if they just weren't patrolling, we got lucky, or the Gods of Urban Exploration were smiling on us, but we walked completely freely about the place, across wide open grassland (i.e. if someone had looked around the corner, we would have been obviously seen - we certainly weren't skulking around) and we didn't see a single person. It was all the more eerie for that, but obviously perfect for taking pictures.

We have plans to go back early in the morning, as we found a way inside (just ran out of time) and hopefully we'll be as lucky again next time. As for the morgue, we got really lucky with that, as kids had kicked the door in, and the window to the room with the autopsy table was completely smashed so you could just climb in. I didn't, as I'm not that dexterous, but it would have been entirely possible. I would definitely recommend going back. There's not as much inside St. Mary's as other explores - most of the fixtures are completely stripped, and some might say it was boring - but I found it more beautiful, oddly, than places like Cherry Knowle. It might have been a personal thing, but I absolutely loved it, so I'd definitely recommend taking a trip up, if you can be as randomly lucky with security as we were. :)

This reminds me of the video game "Sanitarium" and I don't say that simply just because it is what it is - something about the way you edited them reminds me of the game.
I adore these, however. They're so surreal. So haunting.

Wonderful photos, even if some were by fluke, the colours (all that blue and red) and light really capture the old building with grace.

Your commentary totally makes this. The autopsy table you saw through the window is creepy... it looks like it has a drainage system for the body juices to go down! :(

Thank you so much for that. I appreciate you saying that my rambling wasn't totally wasted! (I know a lot of people just want to see pictures and not hear my inane twittering, so it's nice to hear. :D)

The morgue was my favourite part! (That sounds totally wrong, but... oh well.) I loved the place before we found it, and just felt so lucky to come across something so coldly beautiful (IMO) and something not many people to get to see. The fact it hadn't been vandalised amazed (and pleased) me.

As for the drain, it's partially for that, and partially for when the body is washed. There was a shower of sorts, on a long metal pipe, that could be positioned above the table. So I think the drain is mainly for water, but I imagine it's seen its fair share of icky stuff, too. Then again, I'm the kid who wanted to be a pathologist at school, though, so perhaps that's why I wasn't creeped out by it!

Thank you so much for the comment. I know a lot of people don't like people talking about their shots, and prefer to just take their own thoughts from the image, but it's nice to know my rambling wasn't entirely wasted. :)

I'm the same with the people-in-pictures thing. I don't feel it adds to the image much, and the building and objects were so lovely/oddly poignant, I like letting them speak for themselves.

Thanks again. ♥

Haha, that's so weird. I have a bit of a compulsive picking problem - skin, fabric - and I didn't want to even start pulling at the walls, partly for the vandalism, and partly because I pulled one tiny bit (and it made the most satisfying crack when the paint came off) and I had to stop otherwise I would have been there forever!
