About:Variable star astronomy is a fascinating area of study that amateur astronomers can participate in with very modest equipment. Certain stars vary in brightness - they shine with a differing amount of light - and this can be detected. Some pulsate on their own, some grow dimmer when a dim companion comes in front of them, others explosively go up in brightness and then fade down.

Amateur astronomers have been responsible for re-tasking major astronomical satellites such as the Hubble Space Telescope when their observations have indicated something unusual and important going on.

This community is for both the members of the American Association of Variable Star Observers, and others interested in variable star astronomy, to post questions, observations, and reports within the umbrella of the LJ community.

This LJ community is not officially affiliated with the AAVSO and nothing is either express or implied. Your mileage may vary. Offer not valid where prohibited by law. This is the World Wide Web...
