Amateur Asian Athletes was the brainchild of founding member Shem “Jcy” Leong who coined the name late in 2004 after accidentally discovering the joy of running after swimming. Aside from a few casual events in Australia, the idea lay largely dormant until his return to Singapore.

In 2006, old friends and original members Jcy, Blackheart , Chancho and Carlos competed together for the first time as AAA at the 2006 Singapore Biathlon. This was a monumentous occasion for the quartet as it marked the birth of a team.

Spurred on by Jcy’s incessant pleas to “Go for a run?” or “Come for a ride?” this band of brothers found themselves rather enjoying the exercise. Riding on Chancho’s passion to take over the world, the blog was set up to while away the hours at work in between training. With the exception of Carlos, the perpetual underachiever, the boys went on to complete their 1st OD that year.

Meanwhile, word had spread within local running and triathlon groups of a new team that were serious….. but not that serious. AAA gradually grew in numbers as more troops earnestly stepped up to join our ranks; among them an Android and a Janice, a Sexy Beast, 2 Fembots and a Jack Russell named Hans.

Barbeques, birthdays, road-trips and parties thankfully kept the Amateur Asian Athletes sane throughout their demanding race schedules. While the core group settled down to the thankless task of running the show, old friend and new-comer D injected a fresh jolt of red-bull into the group. And coming along just in time to race in the Amateur’s 1st season team kit- the resident know it all, Wiki; full time bike dictionary and pusher.

Sure enough, as dear Chancho had believed all along, sponsors began to take notice of this motley crew. As shoes and jerseys flowed freely our way, AAA grew larger than life- smiling down from buildings and train stations all over the city.

As others have since come alongside us and we look to the future, I ask myself what makes us “Amateurs”. I can surely say that its not about what bike you ride, or how fast you are, its not about how many medals you’ve won or how you did in your last race- who cares? What matters most to us is that you know how to have a good time, you’re thoughtful, respectful and kind, able to laugh at yourself, understanding, honest and accepting… or at least trying to be.
