When love beckons to you, follow him,
though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you, yield to him,
though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the North wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire,
that you may become sacred bread for God’s sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life’s heart.
But if in your fear you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you
Shall laugh, but not all of your laughter,
And weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes Naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, “God is in my heart,” but rather, “I am in the heart of God.”
And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Ephemeral Mists is a new musical project by composer Brett Branning (also the composer for The synthetic dream foundation & Abandoned Toys). "Moon Ritual" is the debut cd, out now on Mythical records.
The sound of the project is best described as downtempo ambient new age music mixed with ethnic world musics in the vein of "Karma" era Delerium, Amethystium, and Steve Roach. Its really a very intoxicatingly beautiful creation and I sincerely recommend it to anyone into newage music styles. I'm looking forward to further releases by this project.

- ATHEIST HOLY DAY - ( A MUST READ ) FLORIDA COURT SETS ATHEIST HOLY DAY!
In Florida , an atheist created a case against the upcoming Easter and Passover holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians, Jews and observances of their holy days. The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized days. The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring,"Case dismissed!" The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying, "Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holidays." The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, "But you do. Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant." The lawyer said, "Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists." The judge said, "The calendar says April 1st is April Fools Day. Psalm 14:1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God. Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore, April 1st is his day.
Court is adjourned.

I kinda do this every year when "A Charlie Brown Christmas" comes on TV. One of my favorite sermons that I have preached. I think the first time I did was around 1995 or so. Then I re-tooled it and preached it again starting in 1997 and the last time I preached this was probably in 1999, when I preached it for Rev. Bob. So here it goes:

Heretics

Recently, This American Life re-aired their episode focusing on the rise and fall and attempt to rise again for Bishop Carlton Pearson, the evangelical minister who was drummed out of his denomination and denounced by his friends and peers for declaring there is no Hell. You can check out the episode here via podcast. It's really interesting and fascinating listening.
I first heard of Pearson via a story on Dateline NBC a couple of years ago, and I was moved to tears. So I listened to the episode again, and had pretty much the same thought process as I did the last time, only this time I identify even more with what was said.
According to many on the Religious Right, Carlton Pearson is a heretic. He was officially voted and branded a heretic by a couple of different religious movements. And I think, wow, kinda cool.
Only because there heresy of today becomes the accepted theology of tomorrow. This is the way the world has worked over thousands of years.
It's really interesting, when you think about it, of what Pearson has gone through, what he has suffered, all because he had balls enough to speak his truth. Granted, he admitted that if he knew what was coming, he would have kept his mouth shut, but that die is cast.
I've said it before, but it really amazes me how much people NEED to believe in Hell. Never mind the fact that the notion of Hell is in direct opposition to the image of a kind, Loving and peaceful God. Instead, what we have are images of a petty, small, vengeful God. A God who is more replete with human frailties than Godly compassion.
( Religious rant under the cut )
This isn't about rewriting or changing anything. It's about taking a logical approach to these issues, and then apply the God given methods of discernment that we are all supposed to be invested with.
Pearson has used his discernment to present a more Loving, compassionate, giving and gracious God. A God who Loves unconditionally and fully. A God who says, "yes, you are saved, saint and sinner alike." A God who truly embodies Love. A God who truly embodies peace. A God who above all, if I paraphrase a quote, makes the difference with Love. For this, Pearson is branded a heretic.
Makes sense, right?

So, the jubilation over the election has worn off. I didn't believe 6 months ago he would win. I didn't believe 6 years ago he would become Senator. I was wrong. And I am glad that I was wrong.
I have a certain amount of personal pride in his election, for reasons I have stated in this journal before, so I will not repeat them. But personally, I think it kicks ass. I have never had such a reaction to an election before, and I doubt that I will again. The only thing that could have made it better is if Obama was in my frat (which according to some, he almost was).
But.........and you know there's a but.........I have a problem.
Many people are saying how proud they are to be an American today. How proud they are of the American process, of this democracy of ours. There are those who are celebrating at the possibility of this suddenly become a fair and equal nation. Cornel West wrote in an essay posted on Facebook this morning that the glass ceiling has been broken.
It's a little too early to think like that. However, I like something else Cornel West said on Bill Maher a couple of months ago. "The moment he gets elected I go from his biggest support to his biggest critic." And that's kinda where I am right now.
The problem is, despite the joy and emotionalism of the election, not much is going to change. In the long run, it is really not that important that a black man was elected president. I mean, it's nice, but in the truly grand scheme of things, it's not at the top of the list.

While this is a little bit of a shameless plug, I was e-mailed by a listener last night and asked to repost the transcript from podcast #33 -- "Defense of Marriage or Defense of Love" episode. So below is the transcript. If you want, also, go here to listen to the podcast.

Feel free to post it wherever.

Defense of Marriage or Defense of Love
Before I get into today’s podcast, I must ask your indulgence, because I am doing something I have never done before on the podcast. And that is, I am reading off of a script that I have pre-written. An essay, if you will.
I am doing this because sometimes I know I get carried away during the podcasts and get slightly off track, and sometimes stray away from my core points in a manner which is even hard for me to return to the original points or statements.
So I ask for your indulgence during this episode if I sound stunted or rehearsed or if I am devoid of some of my normal inflections. But I want to be very clear in everything I say about this subject.

No one was born depressed some people suffer it once and never again some intermittently some over long periods of time, it is also known only 10% of cases are due to biological dysfunction indicating it is therefore largely formed by our environment and our subsequent interaction with it, this explains how some may experience sever trauma not suffering ever from depression whilst others may experience it after lesser events or stress at work.
Dopamine and serotonin the 'happy chemicals' are low in people with depression excluding the 10% as mentioned above their reduced presence being the symptoms not causes of depression. Generally the negative though patterns of people with depression lead to a decrease of activity and social interaction all of which contribute to the production of these chemicals. The drugs given as first line of treatment for the illness target these symptoms and show a much lower success rate for re lapse than that of therapy by 70%, their benefits are in increasing the functions of the serotonin and dopamine until such times as the patient regains momentum in life to produce these for themselves, the downsides however are the side affects which for some are worse than the depression itself or even a contributing factor!
This being said it is therefore generally not the actual events or situations that dictate depression but our perceptions of them and how we filter and label those experiences for future quick referencing that affect our overall emotional state. Emotions are indications of what our external world is, they are links to our brain enabling us to deal with our experiences in appropriate ways, thoughts are known to be linked with them, e.g. someone with a fear of spiders will feel fear at the mere thought of one. Therefore events that create a certain emotion will have corresponding thoughts, depression ensues when too many negative thoughts are being labelled to situations or experiences in life, these thoughts then conjure the corresponding emotion and the cycle repeats and becomes 'habit'. Our minds are also great at generalizing this is a process vital for our survival and ability to process large volumes of information on a daily basis however when too many areas are generalized as negative the nervous system will be over loaded with stress hormones and subsequently manifest physical symptoms like sleeplessness loss of appetite and panic attacks.
Breaking the habit. Firstly its important to realise all emotions are created as signals even negative ones are designed as calls for us to act upon something, excuses are common in people suffering from depression, there is a tendency to rationalize the not doing of things and seeing the end result as negative and unproductive this belief system leads to the lacklustre behaviour modality typical of depressed people. The behaviour itself may be seen as negative and destructive but all human behaviour is created to fulfil positive goals, for example suicide perhaps the most shocking and seemingly destructive of all behaviours is created from a powerful desire for inner peace and a belief that it is unobtainable.
The reason for therapy's success over medication is in giving the individual opportunity to explore these negative belief patterns and subsequent behaviours from an outside perspective enabling them to discover other perspectives and ways to rationalise situations more productively. Becoming aware of the habits you are routinely succumbing to is the first step in being your own therapist, the hardest part of overcoming any problem is to notice that there is one, as these thought processes and beliefs are often taken as ultimate truth, they aren’t you are not the sum total of your behaviours, you are not the same person today as you were 15 years ago and so can change again at will. Who we are is not set in stone unless we so wish it.
Take a step back for a moment see yourself as though you were watching a video and notice your behaviours , which ones repeat , what are the outcomes of repeating those behaviours? In depressives such common ones may be apathy, lethargy, laziness, rejection of outside intervention of help, de-motivation etc. If they are serving you in a negative way notice the reason for the behaviours, what is it they are created to avoid? Perhaps fear of being judged or laughed at or failure of a project, for some the label of depressive may bring attention they would not otherwise get a feeling of being noticed or cared for. A common ailment amongst the youth of today seems to be self harm, a need to be seen and acknowledged may be a strong motivator for this behaviour, as this time of life can be fraught with the desire to find ones identity yet feel trapped and unheard by parents and society which can lead to strong feelings of isolation, loneliness, helplessness and result in drastic physical self abuse as a way of expressing that when other options seem unexplorable. Accessing your motivations for these behaviours will give you the first tool towards changing them, when you know the motivation you may then begin to ask yourself, what other ways can I satisfy this need?
Our body also works like a mirror to our thoughts, you may experience a certain posture which is related to these feelings, slumped in front of the couch after work, hunched over, little direct eye contact with others and so on, be aware of how powerfully this physical state can connect you with your emotions, a good example is smiling have you ever seen a genuinely happy person not smiling? The act of the smile itself releases endorphins into the blood stream and it takes a lot less muscles to smile than it does to frown so its even good too take stress of your facial muscles!
Our environment can also be an indicator and mirror of our emotional wellbeing what is your flat, clothes, music or art work taste saying about you? Have a spring clean , do that laundry, clean your room, tidy your environment as a reflection of your inner clean up, if you tend to listen to sad or woeful music , put on something bright and light to lift your spirits, if you feel low of energy and mentally unhealthy find a fun way to get fit, be mindful of what you do outside that is supporting and correlating with your inner mental states.
Our internal dialogue is an important factor; we are almost unconscious of it, by being conscious of it we can start to address the habitual questions we ask ourselves and the answers we get. The mind is an eager tool and will supply us with the answers to the questions we throw at it, so take note of what kind of questions you are habitually asking and what kind of responses you will get from them , this is where therapy is an effective tool as the therapist is able to ask more productive questions which change the focus of the individual , for example a depressed person may habitually ask such questions as , Why do I feel so bad? Why did he leave me? Why can't I feel good? Why am I not good enough and so on, are there any productive positive answers for such questions? These styles of questions can only bring focus to negative and unhappy answers. Changing the questions changes the minds focus and by asking more productive positive questions we get more productive positive answers!
The main aim in changing our states is to be aware of how we allow certain habits to take hold, noticing what we are habitually doing that is destructive to our desired goals and applying critical thought processes to them asking more productive questions is half the battle to changing them.

Tomorrow marks the tenth annual Celebrate Bisexuality Day, a day to recognize the accomplishments of bisexual people, to show appreciation for bisexual history and culture, and to increase bisexual visibility.
The day was conceived distinctly from other LGBT-pride events, to combat bisexual invisibility, both outside and within queer communities.
Whether you identity as bisexual or you are an ally, all of us can work actively to ensure that the B in GLBT doesn't become a b.
Be proud. Speak out.
