Voting

~ Voting will last 3 weeks - July 25th.

~ Voters will be allowed to score four fictions in each category (General, Slash, and Het) with 15 points, 10 points, 5 points, and 1 point. 15 points is, of course, the story they consider the best, 10 points is the second best, 5 points is third and 1 point is something they think deserves an honorable mention.

~ NO FLAMES ALLOWED. Anyone who flames will be banned from voting. The mod has final say on whether it is a flame or not.

~ Voters don’t have to vote in all categories. If someone doesn’t like Slash or smut, they can vote in General without voting in the other two. Or if they only want to vote in two, they can do that as well. If a voter doesn’t feel like there aren’t 4 stories worth recognizing, they don’t have to use all their points either.

~ You cannot vote for yourself.

~ Before the end of the voting period, each person must send an email to the Vote Coordinator at alec_votecoordinator@yahoo.com that is a list of the story titles with the scores for each.

~ Within two days after voting is closed, the winners will be announced and banners given to the winners.

July's Theme: Of the Sun and Moon

Isil the Sheen the Vanyar of old named the Moon, flower of Telperion in Valinor; and Anar the Fire-golden, fruit of Laurelin, they named the Sun. But the Noldor named them also Rána, the Wayward, and Vása, the Heart of Fire, that awakens and consumes; for the Sun was set as a sign for the awakening of Men and the waning of the Elves, but the Moon cherishes their memory.

The maiden whom the Valar chose from among the Maiar to guide the vessel of the Sun was named Arien, and he that steered the island of the Moon was Tilion. In the days of the Trees Arien had tended the golden flowers in the gardens of Vána, and watered them with the bright dews of Laurelin; but Tilion was a hunter of the company of Oromë, and he had a silver bow. He was a lover of silver, and when he would rest he forsook the woods of Oromë, and going into Lórien he lay hi dream by the pools of Estë, in Telperion's flickering beams; and he begged to be given the task of tending for ever the last Flower of Silver. Arien the maiden was mightier than he, and she was chosen because she had not feared the heats of Laurelin, and was unhurt by them, being from the beginning a spirit of fire, whom Melkor had not deceived nor drawn to his service. Too bright were the eyes of Arien for even the Eldar to look on, and leaving Valinor she forsook the form and raiment which like the Valar she had worn there, and she was as a naked flame, terrible in the fullness of her splendour.

Isil was first wrought and made ready, and first rose into the realm of the stars, and was the elder of the new lights, as was Telperion of the Trees. Then for a while the world had moonlight, and many things stirred and woke that had waited long in the sleep of Yavanna. The servants of Morgoth were filled with amazement, but the Elves of the Outer Lands looked up in delight; and even as the Moon rose above the darkness in the west, Fingolfin let blow his silver trumpets and began his march into Middle-earth, and the shadows of his host went long and black before them.

Tilion had traversed the heaven seven times, and thus was m the furthest east, when the vessel of Arien was made ready. Then Anar arose in glory, and the first dawn of the Sun was like a great fire upon the towers of the Pelóri: the clouds of Middle-earth were kindled, and there was heard the sound of many waterfalls. Then indeed Morgoth was dismayed, and he descended into the uttermost depths of Angband, and withdrew his servants, sending forth great reek and dark cloud to hide his land from the light of the Day-star.

Now Varda purposed that the two vessels should journey in Ilmen and ever be aloft, but not together; each should pass from Valinor into the east and return, the one issuing from the west as the other turned from the east. Thus the first of the new days were reckoned after the manner of the Trees, from the mingling of the lights when Arien and Tilion passed in then- courses, above the middle of the Earth. But Tilion was wayward and uncertain in speed, and held not to his appointed path; and he sought to come near to Arien, being drawn by her splendour, though the flame of Anar scorched him, and the island of the Moon was darkened.

Silmarillion, Chapter 11 ~ Of the Sun and Moon and the Hiding of Valinor

J.R.R. Tolkien

The theme for July is Of the Sun and Moon. I have always loved the story of their creation and wanted to share it with those of you that haven't read the Silmarillion yet. And for those that have, its to serve as inspiration for July's theme!

Your fiction does not have to be based on the creation of either the sun or the moon, or Silmarillion based. The story just has to feature either the sun, the moon, or both as a key element. It also does not have to be based on documented events or characters in the books. Each writer has until July 31st to turn in the story to alec_votecoordinator@yahoo.com.

Note - I have changed the email address to the same address as voting due to some confusion of where to send things. SEND ALL STORIES AND VOTES TO alec_votecoordinator@yahoo.com.

Please include the proper formatting for LJ. If you have any questions about how to do that, feel free to ask.

Good luck and happy writing!

Age: Third Age
Characters: Original characters, Haldir, Rúmil
Summary:
"Galadriel saw that Lórien would be a stronghold and point of power to prevent the Shadow from crossing the Anduin ... but that it needed a rule of greater strength and wisdom than the Silvan folk possessed." -- Unfinished Tales, p 317

But what is to say the Silvan folk wanted such rule? And to what lengths would those rulers go to make their realm great? Throughout the Third Age, the Nandor of Lórien (who are said to have "regretted the incoming of the Elves from the West") were slowly assimilated by the colonising Sindar until, by the time of the Ring War, their own language and culture had disappeared. Perhaps this was intentional.

Then for a season they wandered together in the glades of Lothlórien, until it was time for him to depart. And on the evening of Midsummer Aragorn, Arathorn's son, and Arwen daughter of Elrond went to the fair hill, Cerin Amroth, in the midst of the land, and they walked unshod on the undying grass with elanor and niphredil about their feet And there upon that hill they looked east to the Shadow and west to the Twilight, and they plighted their troth and were glad.

'And Arwen said: "Dark is the Shadow, and yet my heart rejoices; for you, Estel, shall be among the great whose valour will destroy it."

' But Aragorn answered: "Alas! I cannot foresee it, and how lit may come to pass is hidden from me. Yet with your hope I will hope. And the Shadow I utterly reject. But neither, lady, is the Twilight for me; for I am mortal, and if you will cleave to me, Evenstar, then the Twilight you must also renounce."

'And she stood then as still as a white tree, looking into the West, and at last she said: "I will cleave to you, Dúnadan, and turn from the Twilight. Yet there lies the land of my people and the long home of all my kin." She loved her father dearly.

As promised I'm giving you June's theme early. In honor of June brides everywhere, I thought a great theme for June would be Love. It doesn't have to be romantic love however - it can be the love of friends or family.

It does not have to be based on documented events or characters in the books and the words in the theme do not have to be included in the fiction. Each writer has until June 30 to turn in the story to alikatskorner@ rockfan.com. Please include the proper formatting for LJ. If you have any questions about how to do that, feel free to ask.

Good luck and happy writing!

April/May Theme - Last Words

Aragorn knelt beside him. Boromir opened his eyes and strove to speak. At last slow words came. 'I tried to take the Ring from Frodo ' he said. 'I am sorry. I have paid.' His glance strayed to his fallen enemies; twenty at least lay there.

'They have gone: the Halflings: the Orcs have taken them. I think they are not dead. Orcs bound them.' He paused and his eyes closed wearily. After a moment he spoke again. 'Farewell, Aragorn! Go to Minas Tirith and save my people! I have failed.'

'No!' said Aragorn, taking his hand and kissing his brow. 'You have conquered. Few have gained such a victory. Be at peace! Minas Tirith shall not fall!'

Boromir smiled.

'Which way did they go? Was Frodo there?' said Aragorn.

But Boromir did not speak again.

Since I am late posting this topic, this topic will be for April and May. The last two months we have only had one entry so I'm praying this topic will inspire more of you to write. The winner for March will be posted as soon as Viv has a chance to do the banner. Its my fault for the delay - I just sent the story to her today. *hangs head*

The topic for April/May is Last Words. Think of all the many deaths during the War of the Ring or earlier wars from the Silmarillion. What were the last words spoken by those that died? Or perhaps you choose to write about a departure of a different kind. What did Elrond say to Celebrian when she sailed or the elves that did not answer the call of the Valar say to those that did?

It does not have to be based on documented events or characters in the books and the words in the theme do not have to be included in the fiction. Each writer has until May 31st to turn in the story to alikatskorner@rockfan.com. Please include the proper formatting for LJ. If you have any questions how to do that, feel free to ask.
