ANNOUNCEMENT:

The rest of this month until the end of November is Enrage Robin Hobb <strike>Month</strike> Time... thing at the forums that don't exist. Think of the silliest, crackiest, most graphic Hobb fanfiction you can-- and then write it. You can submit your story on the forums that still don't exist, or you can email them to me at wingedmenace@yahoo.com, subject titled "Enrage Robin Hobb Month" or "Crackfic."
And yes, it is a desperate attempt to keep the forums that have never existed alive.

The stories do not have to be long or well-written (though decent spelling and grammar are still reccomended. It's Enrage Robin Hobb Month, not Enrage the Grammar Nazis Month). The author of the crackiest story will receive a FREE JOURNAL from the forums that don't exist's sponsor (which happens to be me)!

Crack? Hobb? Prizes?! THERE IS NO REASON FOR YOU NOT TO PARTICIPATE.

Because face it, Robin Hobb is beautiful when she's angry.

Contest entries will be accepted until November 30th; Stories must be a minimum of 500 words. The crackier the better, but overdone silliness is not what'll win you this contest. Insane is easy; funny is hard.

GO GO GO!

If you do not yet have access to the forums that don't exist, or you've found you've been deleted in the last activity check, email me for the password and go and register a name!

Hobb fanlistings

So, what's the deal with those fanlistings, you might have asked yourself (or someone else) at some point.
It's a very simple concept: a list of fans. It's like a web clique, or a web ring, except that you don't have to own a website and put a code up (but if you do have a site, it is considered polite to link back if you submit an url). Things get a bit more complicated - and organized when we mention thefanlistings.org - it's a community and site that lists and categorizes fanlistings and "approves" them: you have to meet certain criteria to get listed there (update the site regularly etc).
So what's the point? Well, declaring your passionate love about anything and everything. Connecting with likeminded people. Being obsessed. Displaying cute buttons in your website/livejournal profile. Getting addicted to the stuff and having fun.
From a fanlisting owner's point of view: it's nice to see the member count rising and compare the numbers from "biggest" countries. For a long time, there was a tough "competition" between Finland and Australia at my Hobb fl. :D) There are also "awards" for reaching certain number of listed fans such as 250, 500, 1000... etc. The biggest fanlisting (if it hasn't been beaten, which I doubt) is for 0rl1 with over 26 000 listed fans. Also, there's something like 44 000 different fanlistings listed at TFL currently, so it's a quite big phenomena.
Any questions? Fire away, and I'll try to answer. :)

Here are the currently TFL-listed fanlistings related to all things Hobb. If you're interested or even curious, join away to show your support.

Authors & Writers:
Robin Hobb (oh noes! Eddings is leading over a hundred! ;))

Characters Book & Movie:
Burrich (this one seems to be pretty dead so there might not be much point in filling those forms...)
Chade
Verity (please note that this is a NEW one)
The Fool (covers all the facets - you're all listed here, right? ;))
Kettricken
Nighteyes

Relationships, Book & Movie:
Fitz and the Fool
(someone should start one for Althea/Brashen!)

Literature:
Farseer trilogy
Assassin's Quest (the owner seems to be a bit confused with the books or something...)
Liveship Traders
Tawny Man

<strike>x-posting</strike> spamming to buckkeep, hobblings, fitz_is_stupid, a_fool_too_late

First of all, I've really missed the weekly Fool trivia questions even though I'm not an expert (I've only read the books once!).. It was lovely to read the questions & answers nevertheless.

I also wish to ask you all a question I've been thinking about a lot lately. Why do you love Fool so much? What makes him so adorable? I admit he is the most wonderful character I've ever seen in any books. And I have quite deep ponderings on why he captured my heart like he did. I'll write about my ponderings later but I'd love to hear your opinions & thoughts on it. What makes Fool so special? (Except for that he's Fool ;))

Hello people! *waves madly*

I know several of you will receive this message more than once. We apologize for that but since we are trying to reach the whole fandom we hope that you will bear with us. I’ll put it behind a cut so as to make it as painless as possible.

Our new Farseer roleplaying game community is up, and we're finally open to new players. We have plots, storylines, profiles, character models: the works. Now all we just need players!

These characters are off the table:

Fitz

Fool

Molly

Nettle

These are still available and as they’re important to the plot we’d really, really like players for them:

Dutiful

Elliania

Civil

Later on we’ll need Bingtown characters as well.

If you would particularly like to play a character not on this list email us and we’ll see if we can fit said character into the plot. Original characters are also welcome but, again, you need to contact us directly with your ideas.

The plot takes place after Fool’s Fate so obviously we can’t have people playing characters who die during the series, such as Burrich and Nighteyes.

You will need:

Good canon knowledge of all nine books (Farseer, Liveship Traders, Tawny Man), as there will be spoilers

Good canon grasp of characters (play someone whose character you're familiar with)

Still wanna join? Welcome! Contact either ljuser!Miarr (sineomuse@yahoo.com) or ljuser!Candika (seranvali@homemail.com.au) for further details.

Thank you!

Pip and Miarr

ljuser!Candika and ljuser!Miarr, the mods

So. This is just me rambling, because I never can keep my mouth shut, and none of my friends care.

I’ve been rereading the Robin Hobb books - I’m currently on The Mad Ship. And I’ve been thinking, as I go along, about the Fool’s gender.

This is a new consideration, really - the first time I read the Liveship books, I hadn’t read the Assassins or the Tawny Man series, so I just took Robin Hobb at her word, and considered the Fool and Amber to be entirely separate until I finally figured it out (I tried to tell my family about my conclusions, and they thought I was crazy until they read the Tawny Man series). So I’ve never before thought about overall gender, except when we are encouraged to muse gently on it in the Golden Fool, etc.

Overall, I think the Fool is male. This has a great deal to do with the fact that I am a raving slash fan, and Fitz/Fool is my OTP. Also all the same arguments apply - the “muscled as tumblers are”, the fact that the Pale Lady was lush of breast and hip or whatever the phrase was. So I consider the Fool to be perhaps asexual, but almost undoubtedly male.

But when reading the Liveship series, I find it practically impossible to think of ‘him’ that way. Amber is described as ‘unfeminine’, and yet when reading the series, I can be in no doubt that she is female. I can tell myself all I please that it’s just a cross-dressing guy, but no. I find it practically impossible to think of Amber as male.

Fair enough, perhaps - after all, in the text Amber is always referred to as ‘she’, and that’s bound to influence perception. But it’s making me muse about my previous theory - when I think about the Assassin’s series, I find it easier and easier to think of the Fool as a girl.

When the Fool flings himself across the body of King Shrewd, weeping - I can imagine that very much to be the actions of a hysterical teenaged girl. The way he acts as they march along the skill road could just as simply be a mischievous female as male.

Now, I /still/ believe the Fool to be male. The scene when Fitz wakes up in his cottage in the mountains, the way he moons Fitz earlier on - both of these (and much more) are inextricably Male in my opinion. I feel that most of his reactions in the Tawny Man series are equally male (although I may change my mind after rereading them - it’s been a while.) But I consider Amber to be irrevocably female.

I’m not really sure what this indicates. Should we as readers perhaps think of Amber and The Fool as dual personalities, one female, one male, with an allied purpose? That seems rather clumsy. My eternal faith in Robin Hobb (I do my best to suppress all memory of the Malta gaffe in the Tawny Man series) denies that she could ever be so ham-handed. This also, of course, rejects the notion of the Fool ‘switching’ gender half way through.

This just leaves the theory of absolutely fantastic characterisation - an author who can make you think with absolute confidence that a character is male, then female, then male again, and never explicitly state this in the text. That she can do this without losing readers (or at least, I assume the readers don’t give up in despair) is another sign of her true wonder.

So, people, opinions?

Monday?

I would like to take this time to sincerely apologize for being such a scatterbrained mod. I was too busy posting my ugly mug on the internet to remember to get the answers to you guys. So, feel free to flame me.

In the meantime, here are last week's answers:

1. In Assassin's Apprentice, what did Fitz first believe the Fool was besides a Fool?

A moron.

2. In what year of King Shrewd's reign did the Fool come to Buckkeep?

In the 17th year.

3. What is one of the common rumors about the Fool among the servantry of the Keep? (There are a few; as long as the one you pick is right for Apprentice, I'll accept it.)

Some think that he cannot abide sunlight; others speculate that he is an Other. (both are false.)

4. What is the only living animal that Fitz finds in the Fool's room?

A fingerling-- a little fishie. I accepted anything with the word 'fish' in it, though.

This weeks winner's circle:
nerwende;
fairimaiden;
and an Anon Y.
Friday~! And before I get on a bus bound for Lands Unknown, I present to you the answers to this week's trivia questions.

1. What is the first thing the Fool ever says to Fitz? (To Fitz, the words sound garbled at first; it’s fine to answer with what the Fool was actually trying to say.)

Fitz Fixes Feist's Fits, Fat Suffices. You must have had all of those words in your answer. I won't slide on this one, because a lot of people have this quote in their icons ^^;

2. In Royal Assassin, why does the Fool speculate Regal’s eyes are so dark?

"For the darkness of his glance, methinks, betokens that his bowels have backed up so far as to blind him." Royal Assassin, p.138

3. What garment does the Fool give Fitz to wear instead of his wet clothes in Fool’s Fate? (color counts, please.)
(In the original post, I spelled 'garment' wrong... sorry ^^;)
The Fool lends Fitz a long, copper Elderling robe. Fitz, high on Courage Cake, rattles on about it's properties for some time.

4. How do the Fool and Fitz get into the Pale Lady’s ice-palace?
They walk over a weakened swath of snow and fall in with an avalanche.

Our winner's circle this week is... empty! Horror!
Honorable mention for three out of four right:
moon_glows, and her interesting icon.

On Monday I hope to give you some more questions from Assassin's Apprentice.

Men and kingdoms come and go, but Trivia Monday remains.
Maybe we should go to Robin Hobb for some harder trivia questions. For now, though, I hope this set is a good mix of easy, medium and hard.

1.	What is the first thing the Fool ever says to Fitz? (To Fitz, the words sound garbled at first; it’s fine to answer with what the Fool was actually trying to say.)

2.	In Royal Assassin, why does the Fool speculate Regal’s eyes are so dark?

3.	What garmet does the Fool give Fitz to wear instead of his wet clothes in Fool’s Fate? (color counts, please.)

4.	How do the Fool and Fitz get into the Pale Lady’s ice-palace?

As always, questions, comments, praises or flames can be included in your answer comments. Good luck, and see you on Friday.
(NOTE: If my rampant, perverted references to Fitz/Fool slash are bothering anyone, please let me know. I'll put up a reminder on my monitor that says "please remember to not freak out forum members". ^_^)
EDIT: If you're going to post anonymously, you have to tell me who you are.
Hey all:

I was tweaking the community's Userinfo this afternoon and saw something that made me giggle. If you're easily amused like me, you might get a kick out of it, too:

On the same note, does anyone have any ideas as to what to put in our Userinfo besides something like, "The Fool is so purdy tee hee"? Obviously we need community rules and the like, and I can take care of that (it's not like we have many rules anyway), but I was hoping someone could remember a witty, fool-centric passage or quote from the books that we could stick up there. Any ideas?

What were they?

Bingtown Coffee (which Fitz wasn't too fond of) and Apricot Brandy (which both of them were a little too fond of).

3. What happens when the Fool puts the Rooster Crown on while he's visiting Fitz?
<strike>The crown casts a magic spell on them both, causing them to lose all inhibitions and make passionate fateful love right there on Fitz's floor.
MONDAY~! (in case you weren't sure what day it was. I wonder if I'll ever get tired of typing "Monday!
Friday! Apparently, my new questions are stumping a lot of people.

1. How does Amber make her living?

She runs a shop on Rain Wild Street where she sells things she's carved from wood, most notably beads.

2. Althea sees Amber on the docks near Vivacia. What does Amber claim she was looking for?

A nine-fingered slave boy. Amber's timing was a little off on this one; this was before there even was a nine-fingered slave boy.

3. Amber offers Althea her choice of a basket of wooden beads. Which does Althea choose?

A bead in the shape of an egg; more specifically, a serpent's egg.

4. "I'd hate to have to kill you," the Fool tells Fitz. Why?

This one stumped a lot of people. "I'd hate to have to kill you. Verulean silk should be draped for storage, not wadded."

Again, our winner's circle this week is empty! We do, however, have a slew of honorable mentions for three out of four questions right:
belovedfool;
ehlana_bane;
wren10514;
and nerwende.

And now, because you know you want it, another poll.

View Poll: Fool-Poll!
Monday~! Sorry these questions are a little later than usual, but I spent a certain amount of time flipping through the books trying to find good questions.
This week features the debut of some Amber questions, and one extremely obscure Fool question.

1. How does Amber make her living?

2. Althea sees Amber on the docks near Vivacia. What does Amber claim she was looking for?

3. Amber offers Althea her choice of a basket of wooden beads. Which does Althea choose?

4. "I'd hate to have to kill you," the Fool tells Fitz. Why?

Good luck!

EDIT: I would like to note that in Friday's poll asking if you wanted harder questions, four people answered 'hard' and four answered 'fish'. Hopefully by next week I will have found some questions that are both harder and fishier.
