    A new level of nerd
I have many folks on my flist who love The Strand. I could lose myself in a bookstore like that for days and require a rescue helicopter to get back out.

But now they're branching out into my newest diversionary activity, home decor:

    Dear Post Office
So that certified letter that worried me all weekend was actually a package from [info]evil_little_dog and the carrier put my name on someone else's certified notice (and presumably the poor sot that bank thing is from thinks they're getting a package from the midwest)

Oh thanks for nothing you incompetent....

I was late to work for this??

but in compensation I have this (and guys they seem to have gotten rid of the 'are you sure you want this egg' since it was gone this A.M.)

    Rarrrr! WAKE UP, it's MONDAY!
This morning I was late for work because I couldn’t find my keys. Because they were in the kitchen cabinet. Hi, Monday. SO good to see you.

I dunno actually if this is Monday's fault or Sunday night's emergency nachos run fault but it is SOMEBODY's Fault. And surely not swmbo's! That's just crazy talk. But I'm completely groggy and unfocused and trying to parse a thousand emails from having been out Friday. My favorite thing is when people email me asking about the status of a project, using the link that clearly shows WHO the project was assigned to, and not bothering to ASK THE PERSON IT WAS ASSIGNED TO. Even when they receive my out-of-office-reply! CoworkerM, you are ON NOTICE.

So, in great sadness and despite the fact that I took a 3-day weekend, I'll have to admit defeat on my Booker longlist project. I read 10 of the 13, have 200 pages left of one (so that one I'll get) and then have 2 more left to read - one of which hadn't even arrived! And the annoucement is tomorrow! AND I HAVE A RAID TONIGHT!!

But that's ok, I will definitely have everything on the shortlist done, whether I already have or if I have at most 2 books to read. So I am feeling very happy. I was actually doing awesome on the books available for Kindle but once they hit the real-book-only phase, it became really difficult. Particularly the monstrosity that is The Northern Clemency, since it's near 800 pages and HUGE and comparatively fragile. Also, while it's SORT of a quick read - in that when i'm reading it I can get through a lot of pages in an hour - it's not a particularly interesting or engaging read! So I keep putting it down and finding other things to do.

Like watch TIVO'ed Amanda Bynes movies that are retellings of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Yeah. I think that says it all.

I did NOT watch True Blood yet and I REALLY WANT TO! I have it TIVO'ed as well. Due to the miracle of DirectTV going 'omg, no, don't cancel, here, have 3 months of movie channels for free'. I should get to that next week but - did anybody watch it? Any non-spoilerish opinions?

Speaking of which, I need to get ON it about the fall schedule, I have no clue and it's already almost too late. THIS IS HOW OUT OF IT I AM!!

Also, I forgot to mention it, but a week and a half ago I had to cut gum out of my hair. It was not MY gum, it was nephbo's but still. I think September is gonna be an interesting month.

I think - I think I had something else to say, probably, in my head on the way into work. But now it's just singing about coffee, so I'm gonna go make myself a cup of that instead. Mmm, coffee.

Squishy, squishy love to you all!

    list!
    * Anyone who thinks she is plump, portly or any other chubby-words, needs their eyes checked. A lot. She's so goooorgeous.

    * I was named by [info]r_vecchio, so:

    1. Next to each number, write only the name of the person who fits.
    2. Answer one question with one name.
    3. Don't tell the questions to anyone who isn't doing the meme.

    tada.. )

Feel free to not ask for the questions.. XD

    * [info]belmanoir has really awesome thoughts about fic feedback here. For the record, I agree with her. Heh.

    * PEOPLE NEED TO GO LOOK AT MY NEW WONDEROUS HEADSTONES RING. BECAUSE YAY!

    * Also, I am loving all the ds match fic so much. YAY AGAIN.

    * Psych was awesome as always this week. I may disapprove of a certain.. thing, but I still found the ending scene adorable. Plus, I still wish to marry Shawn. ;P

    * So I see that the first two Californication episodes have arrived on the internets. well, THANKS A LOT. Now everyone will have seen it already while I am waiting until the actual premiere because um, I am super lame and kinda.. wanted to see Callum on my birthday? Of course, with my luck he won't even be IN the premiere, or barely in it.. WASTE OF A BIRTHDAY. ;P I'm also refusing to watch the leaked premiere for Dexter for the same reason. Uh, minus Callum, of course.

    * in conclusion, Stephen Colbert and Hugh Dillon are still my favourites.

    Writer's Block: Google Founded

Ten years ago today, Google was founded. In that time, how has Google changed your life, and do you ever go out of your way to avoid its omnipresent power?

    View other answers

Man oh man, do I have something to say about this. Google is ten years old? Part of me can't believe it. You know, when I was your age, if we didn't know something, we had to just ask around, live with the ignorance, or get our asses to the library where we had to look it up. And we had to use a freaky thing called a card catalog to find the books you needed, which was a wooden chest filled with little drawers filled with cards, and you had to know things like the alphabet and author's name and the title and possibly even the Dewey Decimal System to find what you needed. You kids can just get off my lawn right now, because you don't know how easy you have it.

Now you can just type a search term into a box and voila!, information comes up on your screen.

I remember the days before Google; then we used Yahoo search and it was kinda hit or miss. I think it also didn't help that there wasn't as much good stuff on the internet back then. If you wanted real info, you still had to get your ass to the library. And I remember the days before Yahoo had a search, and honestly I don't know how we found stuff on the internet then. I think just by randomly poking around. I remember using Mosaic, and thinking it was really slow and sucked, and I remember using Netscape and thinking that was way better. And I remember when the internet wasn't really cool yet because it seemed like people didn't know much what to do with it, and you kept hearing it referred to as the 'information superhighway'

I think the oddest thing about Google is how it has insinuated itself into our lives; how we can't imagine living without now. We don't even think about it when we look up some random bit of info to settle an argument with someone or just to satisfy some curiosity, and it's hard to remember what we did in the days before that became so easy, but I think back then you had to be so much more determined to find what you were looking for. But it's an illusion. We can live without Google, I know because I *have* lived without Google, everyone who remembers life before the Internet has lived without Google.

I think we all talked to each other more back then, but knew fewer random facts. That would be my rough guess. I think I read more books back then.

Connor – Post series – The Return (A.N.- alludes to things in After the Fall )

Being back didn’t feel real to Connor. After so long in hell – at least this sojourn there didn’t involve time differentials – being back on earth felt somehow disorienting, like getting wobbly legs from an amusement park ride. Angel and Spike agreed on the first call to make, to the Slayers. The reunion was big and loud and it made Connor realize he had no one to reunite with. Everyone had been with him in hell. There had been no one here to miss him. Faith and Willow wouldn’t even remember him. Faith? Connor grinned broadly, hungrily. Time to get reacquainted.

Well that was a job of work (also, TV babble)
Let's just say that Jan-May I was completely overwhelmed with class and kept putting off stuff 'until later' and then I was gone from May-July then had summer class. Finally we are at do it or be declared a toxic waste dump. (I.e. mom is coming on Friday)

Cleaning this place was a job of work no doubt about it (I had a Bizarre Food Marathon to listen to as I worked so yay). The closets are still no-man's land.

I totally washed the kitchen floor so i moved Roy's litter and food (among many other things) out and he came inside (after spending all day with the neighbor), saw it and sat down and cried and cried until the floor dried and I put stuff back.

The premie twins are doing well. Thanks for all the well wishes.

My brother, his wife and the in laws left today for an all inclusive resort in Mexico (darn, i thought it was next week, now it's too late to buy that life insurance...)

WHY is EVERYTHING on Tuesday? I mean it, practically everything. Sigh

So monday - Heroes. Didn't see anything else worth while. My own worst enemy with Christian Slater might be interesting

Tuesday - NCIS (and house if you're still watching it), Fringe and the Mentalist, figures the two shows I wanted to see are against each other, guess it'll be Fringe. then Law & Order SVU and WIthout a Trace are against each other

Wednesday - Um is anyone else gonna try to watch Knight Rider (the cast is cute) or are we all very afraid? Criminal Minds is on afterwards

Thursday - What a wasteland. SMallville is still on? Who is still watching this I wonder? LIfe on Mars...yeah did we really need to Americanify this? We never do that right

Friday - Crusoe - either going to be a fun swashbuckler sort of thing or very very awful (my money is on the latter but I might still look) and Numb3rs though i'm getting tired of that

I don't think i've seen a year with so little new things that sound interesting. i like to have one hour a night of non-educational TV (the main reason i have dish) to just veg out with.

    ramble: shipping and fandom
So, I’ve now been told for the millionth time why I feel what I feel— biggest ones at the moment being in politics (I apparently only support Obama because I have been brainwashed to support him so my opinions don’t matter) and now through my choices in fandom (I only like this couple because I actually hate that other couple over there).

However, I’ve moved past annoyed and now I’m just kind of… laughably amused because after the last few days really thinking about all this, I’ve come to a few conclusions about the nastiness about shipper drama.

A trailer for the Sarah Jane Adventures, season 2. Here's where I get a bit perverse: comment spoilery for casting ) Other than that, I'm all anticipation.

    Lost and Heroes:

Puzzle Pieces is a lenghty, rich and well developed crossover between Lost and Heroes. Both of which are ensemble shows, and I do love it when fanfiction makes proper use of this, like this one. The different universes mesh well together, and some of the parallels between characters are incredibly striking. Spoilers for both seasons of Heroes and Lost until and including s4.

    Kamikaze reveal!
So it's been a week and the [info]kamikazeremix authors are being revealed. [info]merihn remixed my story, so if you guys would like to read it, this is it: And So I'll Run But Not Too Far (This Is How It Goes Remix). She did a very good job. :-)

Now, here's the story *I* remixed. I was just going to link to my post at the comm, but then I thought I should have it posted here too. It's a Gen story because one of the rules of remix is that you can't change the original pairing, but you *are* allowed to either downplay the pairing or to hint at something more. So, uhm, yes, I kinda hinted at something more.

Title: Wednesday's Child (The Full of Woe Remix)
    Author: [info]marciaelena
    Pairing: None
    Rating: PG-13
    Warnings: None
Spoilers: For "AHBL" and "Mystery Spot"
Title, Author and URL of the original story: Heavenly Day by [info]frostian
Summary: Sam and Dean and fear and love. A "before and after" take on the original story. 5,772 words.
Disclaimer: This is for fun, not profit--Supernatural belongs to Kripke and the rest of its respective owners. Sam and Dean belong to each other.
Notes: A lot of this is stream-of-consciousness, internal monologue, so I'm hoping it's not too messy or meandering. The original story seems to be fairly AU, so that's where I went, too. Assume it veers from canon shortly after 2x22, but the events from "Mystery Spot" still take place. Thank you so much to [info]humming_along for beta and encouragement. ♥

    I didn't need this stress
I have a fairly bad anxiety about money. I'm a hoarder to start with and I know why I'm so anxious. My student loans. You've been here for the drama. REALLY been here some of you and have been so helpful (thinking of [info]marenfic and [info]southernbangel with their professional advice, thank you ladies. It HAS helped)

So today I had to go do laundry since I was in no mood during the week. FIgures. I'm usually home Saturday mornings. I get back to the notice that my bank sent me something via certified mail. Well i just checked my accounts (so I can go billpay right now) and my money is all there.

THat doesn't mean I'm not going to be worrying way more than I should about this.

Bah. THe upsides: Mom called to tellme my Renn gown is almost done. and I'm ALMOST done with my Fire and Ice challenge story!

Side note for the Angel fans on my list I WILL be doing that Angel After the Fall story. Anyone willing to beta it once I get it done. I'm looking for betas who have read the comic since neither I nor my usual beta has read the book and are relying on Wiki which is always dicey.

    [info]fannish5: Memorable Lines
Five favorite (or most memorable) lines of dialogue.

Five? Only five? I'm a Joss Whedon fan. And a Blake's 7 fan. And - okay. Five.

    1) "I can't be the first person who has trouble taking you seriously, can I?" Arvin Sloane, to McKennas Cole (Quentin Tarantino) while the later is giving him a typical Tarantino-style pop culture rant while torturing him; Alias. What makes the scene is that Sloane isn't a tough action hero; in fact, he's the villain of the show. It's not that he doesn't feel fear and pain, either. (He shows them later once the ordeal is over, but to his frenemy, Jack Bristow, and only to Jack. Certainly not to Cole.) But with that once sentence, he gains the upper hand in a situation where the odds are completely against him.

    2) "Also, I can kill you with my brain." It's the "also" that makes it; River Tam, in Firefly, being hilarious and scary and sincere in the way Whedonian creations can be.

    3) "Did it occur to you, mother, that it might be you they hate, rather than me?" "Nothing occurs to you that didn't occur to me first. That is the affliction with which I live." Tiberius and Livia in I, Claudius. Livia: still ruling supreme among ruthless, cruel and witty matriarchs.

    4) Darla, pressing a cross into Angel's flesh and burning him with it: "No matter how good a boy you are, God doesn't want you!" He backs off. "But I still do." In one sentence, you have the Darla/Angel (without - us) relationship and my favourite arc until Connor came back from Quor'toth. And it was a last minute rewrite of the original script, too. Darla in Angel: The Series.

    5) "I never wanted you to… I remember when you first arrived on Babylon 5. You were so full of life... innocent. I was not kind to you. I treated you poorly. I think that I did that because I was... envious of you. Envious that you had come so far and yet were still... innocent, in your way. You still believed. I, on the other hand... I cannot tell you that your pain will ever go away. I cannot tell you that you will ever forget his face. I can only tell you that it was necessary. You may have helped to save our people. You did a hard thing... but you still have your heart, and your heart is a good one. You would not be in such great pain otherwise. It means there is still hope for you. And for that... I find I still envy you." - Londo Mollari to Vir Cotto, in Babylon 5. Londo has so many funny lines, and so many moving lines; it's incredibly hard to pick one bit of dialogue and interaction. But this is my choice, because the scene it is from is outstanding in many ways. Through a variety of circumstances, Vir has just killed for the first time. The man he killed was one of the vilest villains of the show, but Babylon 5 still doesn't treat this as an easy thing, and shows the aftermath on Vir, whom Londo finds drunk. Londo's attempt to comfort Vir here sums up the depth of emotion between them and the self awareness of Londo in one swoop.

Why aren't more of my friends watching Psych It's very cute. I absolutely adore Gus.

Ditto for Eureka. It's a fun fusion of mystery, SF and comedy. Yes the science is dubious at best. Taken with a grain of salt, it's just fun. And the sheriff is kinda cute and the ladies are very attractive. It's probably one of the most fun of the summer series

And ditto again for The Closer probably my favorite crime drama right now (though this season is a bit hit and miss.

I have no one to talk with about them. pouts.

Also after [info]wildrider mentioned it I watched BBC AMerica's Primeval (see Eureka about that suspension of disbelief) You have time riffs, killer dinosaurs and a really hot cast. The two young guys and the blond girl are smoking (with good on set chemistry). It wasn't a bad show.

I'm very much looking forward to Heroes and...well that's about it. I'm getting a little tired of my crime dramas. Oh I'll watch them but yeah some of them have played out.
I'm curious about Fringe please don't let it suck.
