| Fri, July 17: Nouvelle Époque @ The Players mansion, NYC |
[Jul. 5th, 2009|08:34 pm] |
Greetings, vintage enthusiasts...We thought you'd enjoy this :)
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Gemini & Scorpio cordially invite you to Nouvelle Époque Cabaret-Salon Fri, July 17, 7-9pm VIP reception, 8pm-late main event The Players private club, 16 Gramercy Park South, $30-$10, 21+ Details & RSVP: http://www.geminiandscorpio.com/events.html FB: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=96321774194
La Belle Époque was a time of artistic and intellectual abandon. Painters, poets, philosophers, and the cleverest of rogues mingled at cabarets and salons to indulge in the Bohemian sensuality of the creative life. The connoisseurs of art, thought, and expression celebrated the tumult of the age in high class and with impeccable style. We hope to inspire you to do the same on this special night in one of the true jewels of NYC.
The Players: The legendary Players, boasting such luminary members as Mark Twain, Eugene O'Neill and Ernest Hemingway, is a members-only social club founded by the famed 19th century Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth. The Players' landmarked home is a magnificent Victorian mansion with a wrought-iron balcony overlooking Gramercy Park. The Cabaret: The Slipper Room's illustrious owner James Habacker presents--and, in guise of Chester Mackerel, charming professor of abnormal psychology, hosts--a night of exuberant entertainment to ignite the senses. JC Hopkins' Biggish Band plays rollicking hard bop swing all night featuring guest vocalists tap-dancing sensation DeWitt Fleming Jr, velvet-voiced Jolie Holland, and Tony-nominated downtown icon Justin Bond, in addition to JC's resident front-woman Queen Esther. The always-surprising Julie Atlas Muz (Miss Exotic World 2006), the jaw-droppingly stylish MsTickle, and hilariously naughty Trixie Little & Evil Hate Monkey perform feats of burlesque to live accompaniment by the band all night. In band breaks, 1920s tap sensation The Minsky Sisters amuse and titillate you. The cabaret runs 9pm-12am in the formal Dining Room, preceded at 8:30pm by a complimentary dance class. After the cabaret, DJ Shakey spins a most unique mix of vintage + modern beats to keep you dancing. The Salon: After 9pm, the Sargent Room across The Great Hall is your salon for cocktails and conversations, as jazz pianist Jesse Gelber sets the elegant mood. A custom cocktail menu will be crafted for you by swanky lifestyle guru Fredo Ceraso of Loungerati.com. VIP Reception: The Sargent Room and its wrought-iron park-facing balcony are reserved for VIP guests 7-9pm for a cocktail reception and a private performance by San Francisco opera diva Marisa Lenhardt, as stylish cigarette girls treat you to hand-rolled cigars and hand-dipped chocolates, courtesy of Velvet Cigars and Desserts by Michael Allen. Dress code: Belle Epoque - late 1800s to WWI, black tie + evening glamour, speakeasy + cabaret, top hats + tails, feathers + gloves, outdo yourself at your most fabulous. |

Earlier this month I made my FIRST attempt at a vintage look. (Photos.)
I need help on something: my eyebrows. GAH! I never started wearing make-up until just this year, and my eye brows need serious help. Going to a professional, unforntuantly, is simply out of the question at this time -- I make just enough money to pay rent and put gas in the car. Any tips/help you can give on plucking, shaping, make-up/brow pencil brands, etcetera would be greatly appreciated.
Also, any other general make-up and hair tips would be a big help. I'm still very new to the vintage look.
Thank you!!! |

| Review of new film version of Noel Coward's 1924 play "Easy Virtue" |
[May. 22nd, 2009|11:02 am] |

| | content | ] | For those who like the 20's, this movie has some gorgeous costumes!

The liberties taken in Easy Virtue, the new screen adaptation of Noel Coward’s 1924 play, may cause Noel Coward purists to have a heart attack or a fit of the vapors. However, as this is one of Coward’s lesser known plays, the changes made by writer/director Stephan Elliott (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) are far more forgivable than they would be to one of Coward’s classics, such as Private Lives, Design for Living, or Blithe Spirit. The film is not pure Coward by any means, but in the end is an enjoyable piece of fluff. (Review continued here.... http://ones2watch4.com/movies/reviews/easy-virtue-2/)

...in my living room!(originally posted in Retro Homes so I apologize for the repeat if you are a memeber of that community too)I like Elvis,I love vintage kitsch, combine the 2 via velvet painting and I am a happy girl. And he's huge!38 inches tall and 28 and 1/2 inches wide.I've never seen one this size,he takes up a good chunk of space on a very blank wall I had so it worked out perfect.

| Antiquing finds! |

| | giddy | ] | I spent a total of 8 hours yesterday antiquing with my mother and her best friend. We hit up only a total of three places. Two of them are extremely large and filled with over 200 booths. Two of them aren't too hip on how to price, which just ends in my good fortune. Other than the photos I'm posting...I also ended up with: A great 1950's black faux leather purse. What made it extra special is that inside we found the wrapper of some Teaberry chewing gum and a few bobby pins...FROM the 1950s. I love those personal touch findings.I only paid $10 for it! I also got a gold lame coin purse,a 12 pc. pink set of Melmac cups and saucers for only $8, two bonnet hair scarfs ( one sheer powder pink with matching polka dots & A 1950's Aqua one)$10 for both, two pairs of earrings $3 for both, a Tiki button up blouse $8, a handmade 1950's apron with great fabric $1.50, a powder box, a clip on men's western bow-tie with four hankerchiefs in the original package & some late 1940's men's boxers $12 for both. The following photos are of a two piece navy luggage set, only $15, and a pea green hat box case for only $2.25! The Rushton Plush (?) was only $5, and the heels which are in GREAT condition were only $20 ( they didn't label the shoes but said that since we dress "neat" they were $24.99 but if I buy them,$20~!) LOL!!! The plus is that they fit! Thank you petite genetics for narrow as crap feet! I only spent a total of $80 yesterday! At the last stop my hubby chipped in about $22.I think we did really good though! I came SUPER CLOSE to talking him into getting this tall, slender, metal pantry which to me looked late 1930's-Early 1940's. It was Red & White, which matches our old kitchen. No room though for it though. It was only $100! They also had a matching ice box refrigerator by General Electric for only $400!!! Here are a few photos! ** This is my first attempt at doing an LJ cut, I apologise if this does not work.**

| | The Beatles - Your Mother Should Know | ] | Just thought I'd post a few photos of my Dad's dining room set. It was custom made by Krug (if that means anything to you =P) over 75 years ago for my Grandmother's school teacher. Our family has had it for over 45 years but because we have so much furniture we're actually selling it off (which is why I've taken photos). Back in the late 80's I suppose my mother decided it needed to be 're-done' -_- and my father was stupid enough to obey her, and alas...that's why it has the crappy 80s stain on it. But the carvings and everything are beautiful so here it is...

| Berlin advice? |
[Apr. 19th, 2009|07:37 pm] |
Hi ladies - I'm travelling to Berlin for work in about 2 weeks and am looking for suggestions. I've heard there is a great vintage and rockabilly scene there, but I don't really know where to look. Someone told me White Trash Fast Food is great for music at night and I have a few vintage shops marked on my map, but I'm open to any and all suggestions. Anyone here from Berlin?
Thanks!! |

Hi, I'm Ashlee. I *love* vintage. I often wish I could have lived back in the good ol' days. I love watching old films, giving my photographs a vintage feel, & incorporating a hint of vintage into my wardrobe. I'm still trying to find the perfect, classic red lipstick. :) |

| | The Ink spots - I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire | ] | Another post so soon... I have a variety of little knick knacks from Grandparents/Great Grandparents and the 1920s hotel/pub we used to own so I'm hoping to get photos of everything. So today I just have to post just a few of my finds... First an old tea tin that belonged to my great Gramma. It was at the hotel and on our last day (hastily sorting through things we wanted to take) I noticed it and just couldnt leave it behind.

I was just wondering if anyone anything about any of them, or their value. Or maybe you just like the look of them =P Either way, I thought I would post.

Was doing my normal routine of browsing my favorite flea market for things to resale when I found this lil gem and just had to keep it for myself. The best little treat was on it too,a little note pinned to it that read "Colleen's going away dress, wedding reception 1951"!Its much cuter in person and sorry hangers dont do clothes real justice but I dont have a mannequin and am currently 19 weeks pregnant so my normal 26 inch waist is already 35 so there is no way I could even pretend to model it right now, haha! Its sheer and all the rhinestone buttons still there (yeah) and a blue velvet belt. On a side note too Ive gotten some cute vintage maternity that I'll have to show off here soon I just am really horrible about such things right now.

| | calm | ] | GOOD morning everyone.
I have been collecting vintage clothing for some time now. Beside writing, it is my great passion. I also collect mannequins, yea some folks call me odd but I love them, regardless of their age or condition. I dress them for any holiday or special occasion. I just feel at home with anything vintage, including furniture. I was born one decade too late. lol Anyway, here are just a few photos from a lil bit of my things. | | the living wage | ] | So, in my previous post, I posted a picture of a dresser that was left to rot away in an abandoned house.
But I have just stumbled upon all of my pictures from this house, the whole house was abandoned in the early '70s or late '60s I believe.
Everything there is in mint, or close to mint condition.
( Come see! )
