Here's a quote from a conservative writer that perfectly illustrates the main problem that I have with most conservatives these days:
"What sets conservatives, and by extension the GOP, apart is that we have always encouraged vigorous debate and the civil discourse necessary for the continuation of this American experiment. It is the foundation of our republic and the catalyst to our best ideas. But we succeed in our intellectual pursuits only because they stand firmly on the solid rock of our morality, our spirituality and our admission of and submission to the God that grants our souls the right to breathe. The sinking sand of liberal dogma will never be a suitable substitute." Doug Patton (source here)
In other words, the freedom of debate and discourse which is the foundation of the "American experiment" can exist only if it is grounded in faith in "God as conservatives understand Him"; there can be no such freedom to question those basic premises.
After twenty years or so of being enrolled in the Republican party (after I left what was then called the "Free Libertarian Party" in New York State, now called just the Libertarian Party), I have finally come home to the Democratic Party of my youth, and while I still don't agree with all the policies of ANY party, I think I'm probably here to stay. |

New approach to Logan: speak softly (since I don't impress him or anyone else when I try to yell at him) and carry a BIG water-sprayer.
I just found out they're making a movie of "Marley and Me." Too bad I can't take Logan to see it.
Oh, and to paraphrase something a Republican friend said about that other candidate for Vice-President, is it OK if I'm developing a little crush on Joe Biden? :-) |

Logan has discovered that the "PetSafe indoor bark control" device is the "enemy" that makes that nasty noise that only he and Maddie can hear when he barks. His solution to the problem? Confront the device head-on and bark at it.

So.. jetzt ist es soweit..
seit dem 04.10. wohne ich jetzt in Kassel..

Ich war seit dem Einzug auch immer noch mal einen Tag zu Hause, dank meiner Ma, die ja in Kassel arbeitet und mich dann nach der Arbeit mitnehmen kann..
Heute war meine erste Infoveranstaltung an der Uni. Ich hab die ganze Zeit ausschau nach ner ehemaligen Klassenkameradin gehalten die eigentlich auch in Kassel studiert, hab sie aber nicht gesehen... stattdessen hab ich ein paar andere nette Mädchen kennen gelernt.. haben gleich Namen und Nummern ausgetauscht..
Heute Abend war dann noch eine Art Fete.. sollte ne schwedische Rockband auftreten... wir waren da.. aber die Musik war zu laut, die Band kam als nicht und die Straßenbahnen fahren ab 19 uhr echt beschissen.. um halb 11 sind wir schon wieder gegangen..
schon alleine, weil man sich nur gegenseitig auf die Füße getreten ist und selbst wenn man sich zum ausgang gekämpft hat musste man noch mal durch ne menschenmasse von mindestens genauso vielen..
ich wette 90% derjenigen die da waren/sind kriegen die Band nicht mal zu Gesicht, weil viel zu wenig Platz ist und die Bühne in nem echt bescheidenen Winkel aufgebaut ist...
Bin froh, dass ich so gegangen bin.. hat genau mit meiner Straßenbahn gepasst xD die vorletzte an diesem Abend..
Morgen Nachmittag fahr ich mit meiner Ma wieder heim.. zum Mittelaltermarkt nach Korbach.. freu ich mich schon drauf..
und montag treff ich mich dann mit meinen neuen bekannten vor der Uni und dann besuchen wir die einführungsveranstaltung gemeinsam..
ich hoffe nur, dass die nächsten Feten ein bisschen.. mehr Platz bieten xD und ein paar mehr Möglichkeiten sich zu unterhalten^^ |

I was brushing my teeth to get ready for bed (since it was nearly midnight) and Logan seized the opportunity to grab a sock that belongs to Jess and run downstairs with it, so I had to chase him with my toothbrush still in my mouth, making incoherent Frankenhumanmonster noises.
I did eventually manage to recover the sock! |

You may have noticed some small changes to your startpage in the last week or so. We’ve begun implementation of two highly requested features. Users will now be able to search Images, News, Maps and more directly from the search box on their page. If you use Google technologies (which can be changed in preferences), you can now click on a link to change what you want to search. For instance, if you’d like to search for an image, click “Image” and type in your query. Then search, just like you would have for the web. No more leaving the page first!
In addition to this feature, we’re also including a new drop down menu to give you more search options. It can be accessed by mousing over the small arrow to the right of the Email link. You can now search Amazon and Wikipedia in the same manner described above. Just select one from the drop down menu, type in your search, and away you go. Popular Google search technologies for Video, Books, Scholar, Finance, Shopping, and Blogs are all also available.
These new features are now available on all Movies, TV, Videogame, and “Other” startpages. At the time of writing, they’ve also been added to our twenty most popular movie startpages. Adding the new features requires a complete overhaul of each startpage. We’re recoding each page from HTML to XHTML using a new standard template. While this will make new updates easier to add in the future, it’s certainly a lengthy process. More pages are being updated with these features every day, and we hope to have the rest of the music startpages finished in the coming weeks.

Dan always sits in the third row on Sunday mornings. Sitting in the first or second rows would make people think he was trying too hard to be pious, but sitting too far away from the preacher would be an obvious sign that he was probably fornicating with the nanny, (or some other mortal sin of the upper middle class,) and was avoiding "accountability." The third row was a happy medium between Bible thumper and wretched sinner, so it seemed like the best option.
"Remember to love your neighbor as yourself, church," the preacher calls from behind his pulpit, his starched white dress shirt wrapped tightly around his ample middle. "Remember those less fortunate than yourselves. That's what our Lord would do."
Dan didn't realize he was dosing until his wife poked him in the ribs with the corner of her "World's Best Mom," prayer journal that she had received from her children last Mother's Day. He shifted, trying to pretend he had merely been deep in prayer, knowing she didn't buy it for a minute.
After a few prayers and old hymns played with electric guitars and drums that would make his grandmother blush, Dan's wife stood, walking to the front and taking the microphone from the preacher. She was the head of the church's women's ministry, (along with seven thousand other committees she was a member of, most of which Dan was convinced didn't really exist,) and began giving details about the ladies tea that would be held at Mrs. Murphy's house next Saturday, and the bake sale at the church next month. All proceeds from these events of course going to "assist outreach activities," (also known as the Buy Our Pastor Larger Shirts fund.)
Finally the two hours that Dan is forced to wear a suit and pretend that he doesn't care that he's missing vital ESPN footage are over, and he rises to leave, shaking hands of colleagues and their wives as he exits. He heads out to do what he does every Sunday; pull the car up to the glass front doors while his wife retrieves their very planned, very finished brude of three children.
She sits on the curb across from the bright white church, watching the sea of well dressed white people burst forth from behind their walls of safety. They walk towards their glowing red, blue, black, and silver company Sedans and SUV's, most of them much newer than the BUick she lived in with her mother. She normally might be embarrassed about the stains on her jeans, or the holes in her T-Shirt, but she knows none of them would notice. She sits out here every Sunday, glimpses of the life she will never have passing before her deep brown eyes. She watches him leave, the same tired expression on his face, the same black leather Bible under his arm, just like always. Every week he looks right at her, but he never sees her. It is as if he is looking through her to the high school football field beyond.

I'm going with Ken to a medical appointment this afternoon, so I'll be away from the computer for a few hours, but the major focus of the day will be getting ready to enjoy the Vice-Presidential debate tonight. I'm hoping to be able to watch with Ken and Jess on the big-screen TV upstairs.
I wonder if I can find genuine Moosehead beer for that drinking game ..... |
