ATLANTA -- You're a mean one, Mr. Olbermann.

But also pretty clever. You've embraced badness but good, turning it into a signature moment on your MSNBC program, "Countdown With Keith Olbermann." And -- even better at this time of year -- you've turned the blasted "best-of" phenomenon squarely on its head.

Let Barbara Walters, "Biography" and other boob-tubers compile their annual lists of top thises-and-thats. (We'll bring you ours next week.) Your nightly Worst Person in the World roundup heads straight for the bottom.

"It's a euphemism for somebody who's wrong and egregiously stupid and abusing their own position," Olbermann says of the feature that's either very funny or unfair -- depending on your view of the target -- but rarely dull.

As euphemisms go, Worst Person in the World is awfully competitive (hey, just look around any office!). So much so, it requires three categories: Worse. Worser. Worst.

Worser?

"We said, 'In tribute to the mendacity or outrageousness of the people on the list, we'll make up a word that's not real and is insulting to the care with which I try to write the show,"' Olbermann says. "Everyone said, 'OK, that sounds dumb enough."'

Dumb definitely helps. Among the winners of the "coveted title," as Olbermann describes it while creepy organ music from the movie "Rollerball" blares: A hapless burglar who carved a gun out of ham, and a Kokomo, Ind., woman who left her 3-month-old son in her unheated car to drink in a strip club at 3 a.m.

Members of the media fare even worser. Columnist and then-CNN contributor Robert Novak was the very first "worst," back in June. Fox News' Bill O'Reilly is a favorite target; he once claimed all three spots in one night.

Even "Countdown" made the list last Thursday for showing a photo of former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland instead of intended mark Neal Boortz.

Atlanta radio yakker Boortz had been named a "worser" for predicting on his Web site that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger would commute Stanley "Tookie" Williams' death sentence out of fear of rioting. Still, it wasn't enough to lift him past the "lady" from Kokomo.

Indeed, on any given day, a rank amateur can beat out the pros.

"It's an open competition; that's the beauty of it," Olbermann says. "We let all people in, no matter their lack of merit. Or because of it."

"Worst" hasn't turned out half-bad for Olbermann, who'll turn it into a book for John Wiley & Sons. And it helped land him a spot on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "mavericks" of 2005.

Talk about going from worst to first.

"It's two different things," Olbermann semi-rationalizes. "To be the proprietor of a list of the worst, you can still be on other people's best list."

Aw, c'mon, Keith. You can do better than that.

Or worse.

I think my favorite part, besides the pot shots at Jake Peavy for not revealing his rib injury earlier, is that he includes a blind item. XD

Which veteran slugger appearing in one of Wednesday's games looked so thin and non-muscular, compared to his old self, that it seemed as if he'd had a Siamese twin removed?

Does anyone know who he's talking about? I'm at work during the games, so I've only seen parts of two games.

In the stands, Yankees fans groaned, another Robinson Cano miscue startling them and causing another setback in the Red Sox's 9-2 win. In the press box, Keith Olbermann smiled, ready for the oncoming onslaught. "Hey, how's your mom?" someone screamed. The broadcaster has received the same kind of playful questions on similar plays, ever since a wild toss from Chuck Knoblauch struck his mother a few years ago. He's amused by it as much as she is, so he grinned when asked how many references were made to it yesterday. "Let's see ... three there ... then two ... I'd say seven," Olberman said. "Last year, Billy Koch threw one (wild) and he brought it up so she's a part of baseball lore."

There's a story there you might want to look into."

Why indeed. TPTB certainly counted on him to anchor the death of JPII a few months back. Kaplan can't still be pissed over the cancer scare piece, can he?
