Just Say No To Space Elevators!

According to an article on Boing Boing, the residents of Williamsburg, Brooklyn are protesting the construction of a space elevator in their neighborhood.

The text of the flyer is:

"WILLIAMSBURG DOESN'T NEED A SPACE ELEVATOR! The Space Elevator Will Mean: Less Parking, Weird Ribbon Thing, Constant Loud Whirring Noise, Increased Space Elevator Truck Traffic. Developers have submitted plans to build a massive space elevator in Williamsburg! This monstrosity, completely out of context with existing development in the neighborhood, will be accessible only to the wealthy, forcing thousands of average Williamsburgers from their homes and live-work spaces! Jobs the elevator will generate (operators, repairmen, astronauts) are certain to go to non-residents! Don't sit idly by and let this elevator cast its impossibly long, cold, and very narrow shadow over our homes! CALL 311 AND TELL THEM 'I JUST DON'T NEED THIS SPACE ELEVATOR!'"

I think we can all agree that a space elevator should not be built in Williamsburg.

The space elevator would be placed near teh equator.

Methinks you missed the point of the flyer a bit...

Including the fact that it's a parody, and not the residents of Williamsburg protesting space elevators? ;)

I would almost think putting it at the poles for less rotational problems would be a better idea, but I know 0 about this sort of thing.

Lizard Rat out.

The poles are actually the worst location for anything to do with space access; the equator's ideal. You actually want the rotation; for launching things, craft use the Earth's speed to get to orbit with less fuel, and with a space elevator, the rotation pulls the cable taut.

That's pretty funny. XD

I just recently started watching this community. What exactly is a space elevator? I mean...I know what it is, but is there any idea of how it would work? :O

Well, I’m not sure exactly how much information you are looking for but for an idea of how it would work in general terms, there is this Space.com article. For a little bit more thorough explanation the Wikipedia article on space elevators is pretty good. Finally if you have a specific question regarding the physics behind the elevator I recommend stopping by the Space Elevator discussion list, there are about 500 members who spend their free time debating the feasibility of this and that aspect of the elevator.
