Meanwhile, on board the Venture...

     It seemed the ship itself thrummed with the nervous energy of the crew as they skittered across to and from the engine room, obtaining tools in order to patch the tears left by the jagged rocks.

     An idealist might consider their energy born of the thankfulness for the opportunity to live another day after enduring the tribulation of the previous night. To Jimmy, it was merely adrenaline. Only Captain Englehorn, Mr. Hayes, Mr. Pierrault, and a tremendous amount of luck had prevented the Venture from colliding with the wall and claiming the life every person on board; anyone who was present as the Venture blindly swerved through the reef in the dense fog before running aground would know that. However, the extra energy appeared to be a blessing because although the threat of immediate danger had passed, there was still the risk of being marooned on the island. How well the crew repaired the holes in the short time would determine whether the Venture ascended above the rocks to transport them to a safe port or sank under the weight of the water rushing into it.

     Even the cabin boy knew that this island was miles from the shipping lanes. Therefore, the possibility of another vessel coming across them was improbable, if not impossible. It was stalwartness and resourcefulness that characterized the men under Captain Englehorn, but having that tested by being stranded on a remote island was not very high on their list of priorities. Moreover, the captain was not the only man with an attachment to this ship--Mr. Hayes, Lumpy, Choy, Jimmy, and many others regarded the Venture as their home, and they would do anything in their power to ensure that it would not be another casualty of the island.

     And as quickly as he volunteered to provide aid in the engine room, Mr. Hayes had ordered him to remain on deck to assist any of the other crew members, which basically meant, “stay on deck, and stay out of trouble.” Jimmy objected, of course, pointing out that he was fully capable of handing the task… kind of… sort of… maybe. Still, there came a point when even Jimmy knew better than to contest the issue, namely when Mr. Hayes took _that_ tone of voice… so here he was, unconsciously gravitating towards the port to get a better look at what exactly they had crashed into.

     Leaning on the railing, Jimmy looked at the forbidding terrain and couldn’t help but feel some sick fascination toward the island that had motivated a man to stab himself in the chest. In his four years aboard the Venture, Jimmy had not encountered something so deceptively unnatural as the landscape before him. The man-made wall appeared to conceal a mass of lush green of the dense foliage and the bright sky which belied the jagged cliffs, dark shadows, and the rocky shoreline.

     Suddenly, Jimmy caught a spot of white in his peripheral vision and immediately recognized it was one of the whalers. It was heading towards the island, and were his eyes deceiving him or was that Mr. Denham standing at the prow of the ship?

     His legs were already propelling him to the engine room.

     “Captain!”

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Arriving to the Caves

The waves crashed forcefully against the tiny row boat as both cast and crew began to descend onto the Island of Skulls. Apparently, the named fit the island quite well, as carvings of hideous faces were not only seen etched on the jagged rocks surrounding the small wooden boat, but on the wall that seemed to keep travelers out. Fascinated, yet also dreadfully worried about what might await them on this island, Jack Driscoll sat and watched as the lovely Ann Darrow quietly gawked in abundance as she too must've been terrified. In the distance, a small opening underneath the gigantic wall seemed to appear, and like a child awaiting a christmas gift, Carl Denham encouraged the sailors to row on. There was no stopping Carl. Jack knew that he was a very determined and stubborn man when it came to him getting what he wanted and nothing could stop that persistent strive.

He could feel the cold spray of the ocean underneath, and like a ghost breathing down his back, a chill was sent down his spine. And as if that were a que, he felt the hand of another, slender hand quickly slip into his palm. A woman's hand. Ann. Turning and looking at the only female aboard, he saw the doubt and worry in her eyes and gave her a assuring smile that everything would be alright. But arriving to an uncharted and forbidden island made Jack uncertain as to what they'd encounter on land, and even he himself wasn't so sure about that smile.

At last the small boat had made its way to the caves, as though time had decided to slow down upon the exhilaration of reaching land. They had arrived.

[Open to: Carl, Ann, Preston and anyone else on the row boat, or nearby the caves.]
