Fanatics of all religions should keep their beliefs to themselves and not try to convert people. Gah.

Some people I was friends with at university are now missionaries in Africa. It's depressing, it really is. I'm not sure if I'm more sorry about them or the ones who have turned into yuppies.

The sister of a friend of mine is still in high school, and she's already been to South America twice on missionary trips. From what I hear, they don't do much more than preaching. It's really sad. They should do more for the community to raise their physical standards of living--not just preach.

Agreed! If they offered help in the form of food or medicine to those in need, I wouldn't care if the packaging had crosses all over it. But I do mind that all they seem to do is preach to these people who have bigger problems than believing or not believing in Jesus.

Man, that part about believing in a merciful god is believing in a false god was fucked up. Some religious people are fucked up.

If God does not want to treat his children well, by letting us grow and learn and even question life, then God is not a good father. And if God is not merciful, if God is a tyrannical king such as the Monarchs of old, then I'd rather be downcast in hell and stand up for in my beliefs of what is right and wrong then go against my morals and serve in heaven.

Sometimes when I read that shit I get scared about religion, like what if they are right. It works, it works on people, and its sad that God must use fear to control his peasants.

I totally agree. How can anyone know what G-d really is like? And why do they choose to believe He is vengeful? To keep people in line, I'm sure. Religion, if used incorrectly, can be a scary, dangerous thing.

Take a doomsday cult like early Christianity that prides itself on martyrdom and openly seeks to abolish class structure, preferring to translate their holy books into the street-Latin of the plebians, and you've got nothing to work with ....

Defer the Dies Irae to the indefinite future (instead of next week), downplay the role of martyrdom, leave class conflict to be settled in heaven, and you've got nifty crowd control. Ave Constanine!

Hell, if you're going to fucking Ghana to try improving people's lives, how about centering your mission around an issue of actual importance, like FGM? For crying in a bucket..

BELIEVE IN JESUS?

why?

BECAUSE YOUR ENTIRE WAY OF LIFE AND CULTURE IS SILLY.

but it's ours...

IT'S WRONG.

will jesus give us food or medicine?

NO, BUT WHEN YOU DIE YOU GO TO PARADISE!!!

I like to ask a very pointed question to missionaries.I ask if children and people who have never heard of the christian G-D go to hell. I usually get a resounding no.It may sound a little cruel, but I love the looks the thumpers get on their faces when I point out this tiny little opinion

Children and people who have never heard of G-D go to heaven(TM)according to them. Sooo it stands to reason that the Christians damned the native americans and others to hell doesn't it? And all because they opened their mouth. See? Silence has it's purposes.

supernatural real estate

To the Catholics, they go to Limbo: one of the nicer suburbs of Hell.

However, if a Catholic were to skip to the front of the line and peek in Purgatory's door, they'd probably just as soon hop in the nearest handbasket.

"Congratulations! all that stands between you and Heaven is the following eight-century Time-Share presentation."

Re: supernatural real estate

It's funny the way they always say they're going to spread the Good News of Christ - and the good news starts with the fiery torments of hell, which people haven't yet heard about....
The hymn 'Amazing Grace' says it rather aptly:
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed'
-so.....without grace you wouldn't have had any fears to be relieved?...I don't think you can really celebrate that grace relieved them, then. It also caused them.

That's the same reasoning some use to say that the great thinkers of yore - Plato, etc. - are not burning in hell...because they just didn't know.

I was told by a so called loving Christian family member, (who by the way told me I was going to hell & taking my family with me due to my beliefs!) that yes, these people Would go to hell. Because there is radio & television & satellites everywhere now, spreading the word of God. They have No excuse Not to believe in God or Jesus she said. Oh, & that the missionaries are Everywhere spreading the word of God.
Sad isn't it. Pretty Lame comment if you ask me.
Any dumb ass knows that not Everyone in the world has actual access to TV or radio or satellites. Even when I brought up this fact up, I couldn't even make her understand. She was so stuck in her little insane thoughts, she wouldn't even listen. Or think for herself for that matter.
Makes me even More comforted in my decision to follow another path.

I'm in a christian youth group, and we go on mission trips to various parts of the country, out of the country, and work in the city. There is no attempts at conversion, rather an attempt to spread goodness.

I myself am a buddhist, but I still attend these because, while they believe theyre spreading the love of christ (through their works), they are really just giving aother name to compassionate love.
