People who responded to my five found things writing meme? You are all insane and I love you. Working on finishing up what's there so far, then I'll round them up and post them into a consolidation post of some sort.
I suppose it's suicidal of me to say so, but if you do want to make any further requests, now would be the time. :P
Graphic Novels/Series I've Read Recently: - Transmetropolitan (heard of it off scans_daily, finally checked it out, holy shit I don't know if I should envy Spider Jerusalem his passion for journalism or stick to writing about kittens. I wish I could come up with something more coherent for this, but I can't.) - The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller (which gave me a shiny look at the whole script-to-graphic novel process, which was really interesting.) - Fables: The Good Prince (is this the last volume? I knew that character was going to be more than just a bit player the minute I saw him. ♥ WAY TO GOOOOO) - Watchmen by Alan Moore(?) (whoa, that was pretty neat. Also, the trailer makes much more sense now, and I'm oddly excited. I can't say I totally appreciated what it was about, really-- it's something on a different level than the average superhero comic-- but what it was was an incredibly engrossing story, and the characters all felt, I dunno... Real, at least for some parts of the comic.)
Three Batman fics I've really enjoyed reading over the last few days:
The Space Between Dreams and Reality by acidic_flower (movie-based, post-movie) What happens when your worst nightmares are inescapable? Fairly shameless, straightforward Batman/Joker NC-17 action. Did I mention it's all happening in Bruce's head? It's all happening in Bruce's head. Much to his personal dismay.
Night Terrors by smilesawakeyou (movie-based, post-movie) “Then kill me,” he murmurs, feeling Him swallow. “I’d love to be your first.” I would honestly have to say this is my favorite fic out of all I've read thus far, and I've been reading a lot. Disturbingly quotable, spot-on narrative for the Joker. Minimal mention of one-sided Joker/Batman aside, this fic is worth reading for having one of the few Gordon and Joker exchanges that feels real enough to be something lifted right out of the movie.
The Endless Dance by someone on FF.net. (comics-based, after most of the brouhaha that makes it so that comics-based Batman/Joker would be something pretty much tantamount to non-consensual carnal relations with one's quadruplegic little sister. Or something. I dunno.) He thinks that once upon a time, he had been able to control himself around the clown. I may have recced this before; I certainly know I pimped it to hopswitch. The point is, I like it. There's nothing romantic or shippy about it, unless you like your romance hardboiled and possibly run through with several sharp objects (and can see pairing hints a microscope couldn't pick up) but from what I've read of the comics recently and what I dimly remember before (the stuff that wasn't just taken off the cartoon, that is) the vibe I get off this rings absolutely true. Joker does get under Batman's skin in a way no one else can. And it's a neat look at that.
I finally watched the Avatar finale. Thoughts on it are pending (aside from 'the bending fight scenes would look fucking gorgeous in a live-action movie', or even just a full-length animated feature) and there are flaws (more individual-interaction-wise than any real problem with the finale's flow) but more importantly, I would like to direct your attention to (non-spoilery, I promise, for the post if not the comments) WOLFBATMAN. Or basically, you know, Avatar/Batman crossover with Sokka as the Wolfbatman.
...it's more awesome than it sounds, really.
If the Avatar movie's tone is anything like the middle/end of the finale, I think I'll like it. I dunno, the humor is cute, and the characters are genuinely engaging, but I love Avatar most when it takes itself seriously. Cheesy or not, it's the real introspective/emotional moments (... er, except, perhaps, for 'The Beach') that reach into my chest and play friggin' hackysack with my heart.
Like scratchmist said, sometimes you just need a heartbreak. :D
