Ever since 2006’s The Evolution of Robin Thicke, Robin Thicke has been a mainstay in urban music. Not since the legendary Teena Marie has a white artist garnered so much appeal from black audiences like soul crooner Thicke.

His hit song “Lost Without You” was the first time a white male artist had a number one single on the Billboard R&B charts since George Michael in 1988. Thicke was the opening act for Beyoncé 2007’s U.S. tour and received a Best R&B/Soul Album nomination at the 2007 Soul Train Music Awards.

Now Thicke is back with his third studio album, Something Else. The first single, “Magic”, was on fire on radio stations across the nation, and channels the likes of early Michael Jackson and 70’s-era Stevie Wonder. The album, which is in stores now, is a new side of Thicke. “The voice stays soulful but the music takes a lot of chances, “ Thicke says. “There's some Jimi Hendrix, there's a lot of Curtis [Mayfield], there's disco, some Earth, Wind & Fire.”

In a one-on-one, Thicke talked exclusively with VIBE.com about the new album, his urban appeal, and Barack Obama.

The new album is called Something Else, how will this album differ from The Evolution of Robin Thicke?
Well, it's really more about what's going in the world with all these recessions, oil, and war issues. It's time for something else; it's for a new way of thought. Hope and change—some Barack Obama!

I have a joke, when you play the album backwards it says, "Vote for Barack Obama!" [Laughs] The album is not political, it's just the spirit of what Barack is talking about is a lot of the spirit of the album, positivity, celebration.

On the last album you had songs with Lil' Wayne, Faith, and Pharrell. Are there collaborations on this album?
Just Lil’ Wayne. Outside of that, it’s just me and my producers. I collaborated with the chord and string players, some of the old Michael Jackson Off the Wall and Thriller records—that was really the only collab! [Laughs]

There hasn’t been a white artist with this much appeal to black audiences since Teena Marie. Why do you think you appeal so much to black audiences?
I met Teena Marie at a birthday party and she was the sweetest person. When things like this happen, it has to be organic. I've loved soul music, gospel music, Jodeci, N.W.A —my whole life. I just do the music and it pours out of me; it just is what it is.

Do you find yourself relating more to black people?
I relate to all people in different ways. I think because I have a black wife and just being with her… the neighborhood I grew up, the school that I went to. I have so many friends of different races. As much as I don't see it, I also have seen it so much that I know what it is. You know what I mean? I don't know it personally, but I've seen it enough to know that it's out there and it's not a lie or a joke.

Have you experienced outright racism for being in an interracial marriage?
There is racism everywhere; it can happen at any corner or any city. There was a great book written years ago by a very intelligent man who said that right now America's cities are being decided on more racial preferences than they are economic and people don't know even know that. It just happens to be the truth that people are sticking together, helping each other because it's been like that forever. It still is and there's a guy like Barack Obama who can show up, maybe help all of that stuff and make us all work together a little bit more.

You play instruments, you sing live. What's your reaction to the artists out there, who don't sing live—who are more of a product?
They are entertainers. There are people who are about precision and entertainment; there are people who are about emoting and expressing. Sometimes they are people who do both, but I think there is room for everybody. I want to watch Rihanna sing her songs—I don't care! [Laughs] I want to watch and I want to listen. She ain't got to sound like Mary J. all the time. Who does? The point is as media and critics you want to say that shouldn't be out there, but as fans you want more music, you want more options. As a fan, I should be promoting all music coming out so I get a choice of what I want to buy. [x]

I'm loving his album Something Else. While I don't think it's a better album (yet) than The Evolution Of Robin Thicke, it's definitely up there in terms of quality. His second single, Sweetest Love, is probably my favorite Robin Thicke song to date.

My stomachache is a little better I guess. I just hate bleeding I HATE IT. I don't like to sleep with a tampon in but when I don't, I'm afraid I 'll get blood on the sheet. So I just kinda wipe up as much as I can when I pee. It's just gross. And no, I can't wear pads, they don't work with thong underwear :p. I can't wait til this is over.

School was fine..still reading the Sartre story I read previously.

Some things really make me think about how I'm not really doing what I want to be doing. Like it's stupid but I heard that "The Load Out/Stay" Jackson Browne song and y'know it's all about playing out, life on the road, and I just realized dammit, I want to be a singer so bad. I want people to pay to hear me sing. I want to entertain them and I want them to know my songs and cheer. I just don't know where to start and I feel like I am just putting all that on hold til if I ever get finished school. But I mean I've been meaning to at least get more practise singing in front of people so I can not be as nervous. I keep meaning to do karaoke but like I think it'd just be a bunch of drunk people warbling Journey. Nobody'd really be standing there belting their heart out like I would. It'd be weird I think. And open mics are more for original material which I just don't have and don't know how to start creating.

I really really need new pants. I only have one pair that isn't ripped. The other pair I've had since 2005 and has a big rip in the leg. My shorts have a huge rip in the ass. And I do have another pair of pants but they're way too high-waisted, I only wore them for work.

Baby's eye is not right. It looks like her eyelid is swollen a little, I mean not swollen shut but a little swollen/squinty..and it seems very teary. We do not have the money to take her to the vet. What could be causing this?

oh thank god that today is now over. i havent had such a rough and tiring day in a very very very long tiime and i just feel so absoluteky drained . but of course besides me feeling completely tired and my brain being wiped out because of alll the damn school work and projects that i have been doing lately . like i said befor elately ive had alot of school work an dprojects that i had to get done . i really dont understand why it is such a necessity for me to havae so much work to do . . well last night i got absolutely no sleep at all and am stilll very tired because of course i was finishing up a total of four projects that were do today , studying for my english quiz that i also had today and then atempting to write tehese absoluitely retaarted things to try and get inoto teh national honors society and teh kappa blah blah which is some history scoiety . im beyond tired mind you i hated how every single project i did came out but i accepted it and tried my best with the time cinstraint that i had on me . mind you one of these was a group project and i had no help at alll in doing alll of this so i just did what i had to do and turned it in . now i wasnt in teh best of moods today because i was super bitchy today because of how damn tired i was but its ok because i got over towards the end of teh day when i heard turned in all of my projects and it all worked out in the end. my teacher liked my said group project and gave me a good grade and the other teacher for my two governement project raised teh pointage you were allowed to earn so i got 200 points instead of amere 100 points. im very pleased with tehfact that even though it wasnt my best work and i was really embarassed to turn te  projects in at least i got good grade for it in teh end and it alll seemed to have worked out .

oh btw i caused quite a stir in my gov class because i have an absoultute huge mouth . we were talking about teh election and everryone in my class were worshipping palin becauyse she is such an amazing person and shes done so damn much . so i clearly stated out loud that i would never vote for her because for one she cant even and does not have control over her kids so how can she control a country . so of ocurse theses two dumbass bimbos were like omg its not her daughters fault your so mean and bleh bleh bleh and i continued into we got into this huge fight and of course i looked like the asshole which i acceoted freely . i hate how sensitive peopl;e are in this day and age and how absolutely ignorant they are . in teh end my fellow students think that its ok for women to sleep around , have sec at an early age , that lll women who do dumb shit are being controled by a man and alll of this other rubbish taht came flying through there mouths . so i tunred to my friends steph and i told her see you ghuys are always making fun of me for who im attracted with just because they are either old or dead but those are the women who i know are truly classy , intelligent and have minds of there owns unlike teh said common woman my classmates swear women do .

i really do wonder if tehre are stilll classic , intelligent , gorgeous women who have tehre own creative and individual minds anymore?

I AM LITERALLY ANGRY WITH RAGE! So it turns out, it wasn't that I "didn't get" the role in in the Correspondance team (read: writing letters instead of talking to fuckwits over telephone); my cuntfuckpisscockshitwanktardhateyoudiebitch manager didn't put me forward for it because she "didn't feel comfortable" doing so. Apparently I'm not ready for it. What? What?! Didn't feel I was ready for reading a bunch of fucking letters by illiterate halfwits and writing replies? Go fuck yourself! This is the same woman, by the way, who read the word "redress" in a briefing as "red dress" and actually wondered out loud why they'd used that term in relation to our compensation policy. I fucking shit you not.

Clearly the only option left to me is to stage a string of fake serial killings using red ribbon, a set of false teeth and my own natural ability to put the "sick and wrong" into "sick and wrong". Watch out, crazy homeless people - Froodle is coming, and she's going to fuck you up.

I had some stuff I was going to say about the last season of the 4400, but I'm too cross now to get appropriately enthusiastic about Jordans hotness, so I'll leave that for tomorrow.

Last week's episode was great. I'm loving season three thus far and I can't wait for tonight's "future" episode. Heroes is quickly redeeming itself from that extremely disappointing second season. The storylines this time around are a lot more interesting and thought provoking than last year's. Here's to continued good work. *raises empty shot glass*
