End of Nip/Tuck

FX nips "Tuck" after one more season

"Nip/Tuck" will come to an end after the plastic surgery drama's sixth season wraps in early 2011, cable channel FX said Tuesday.

The network said serialized dramas, such as "Nip/Tuck," have a much different storytelling model than nonserialized shows such as "Law & Order" or "CSI."

"If you tried to do 150 episodes of 'The Sopranos,' you would begin to diminish the quality of those shows," FX president/GM John Landgraf said during the network's presentation at the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Beverly Hills.

"The David Chases ('Sopranos') and Shawn Ryans ('The Shield'), they're taking on social commentary and grand sweeping questions. If we want to go after that brass ring, we have to accept they have limited shelf life."

FX has ordered 19 additional episodes beyond the current 22-episode season that will mark final season. The show will end its run with a total of 100 episodes in early 2011, with creator/executive producer Ryan Murphy signed on through the last episode.

"Nip/Tuck" has already aired 14 episodes of its current fifth season; the remaining eight are set to premiere in January.

Season six tidbits

FX Networks president/general manager John Landgraf said he believed the channel had several more years of "Rescue Me" and "Nip/Tuck" in its future. (But does Ryan?)

"We do feel some pressure to replace 'The Shield,' but we have at least three years to replace 'Rescue Me' and 'Nip/Tuck,'" he said.

On the upcoming sixth season of "Nip/Tuck," Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica") will play Dr. Theodora "Teddy" Lowe, a new doctor who challenges Sean (Dylan Walsh). She will appear in four episodes.

Also set to appear in the FX drama is Morgan Fairchild, who will play a movie star in one episode.

Ronnie is a tattooed rocker in his late 20s who was wearing dollar-sized spacers in his earlobes. Since he's been recently kicked out of a band, he comes to McNamara/Troy to get his earlobes back to normal in order to get a day job.

"Theodora (aka Teddy)"
28-35. She is a new anesthesiologist at McNamara/Troy. Extremely sexy, dark (think Angelina Jolie), a risk taker. She will be Sean's (Dylan Walsh) new relationship and will bring out his wild side.

From out of the mouth of Ryan Murphy (minor spoilers):

We start[ed] filming April 14.

I don't know why they would be considered part of season five; these eight will air in January of '09, almost a full year after season five. I consider it to be season six. It has a new theme, a new tone, a new...everything.

We, the writers, have LOVED writing these next episodes. They are really challenging, and I think because this might be the end for me they are particularly bittersweet. The next eight is really about the core five: Sean, Christian, Julia, Matt, Liz and Kimber. [Kaji: Er, Ryan, that's six.] The crew I started with. I so love them. I am really trying hard to write them CHALLENGING dramatic material. Truthfully, this shit is so emotional that I really don't know how they would act it, it makes me weep sometimes when I write it. Which, of course, makes me realize I am ALL the characters I created, and fuck...I will miss parts of me when they are gone. Last night, I took all the writers out to a fancy dinner to celebrate us writing again after the strike. We had many drinks and shared many memories of the show and the events that got us here...sigh. It was lovely, and sad and like...the end. That's really what it felt like.

The stabbing was not a dream sequence. We did that trick with Christian's funeral, and shant be doing it again.

I will not tell who dies and who lives because it's a plot point in the first episode back, which we are currently writing.

Guest star cast:

Adhir Kalyan is set for a recurring role on FX's drama "Nip/Tuck." Kalyan will play Dr. Raj, an intelligent, socially awkward recent medical school graduate who happens to be 16 years old. Dr. Raj comes on board to help Christian (Julian McMahon) with surgeries following Sean's (Dylan Walsh) stabbing. "Nip/Tuck" is in production on its sixth season, with the premiere date yet to be determined.

Heck no! Production on new episodes has already begun, and though Sean may not be in tiptop shape, McNamara/Troy could have their very own Doogie Howser to pick up the slack. Sources say a teenage doctor named Raj infiltrates the boys' practice and sticks around for quite some time!

I just watched Season 5 in a week.

Extremely intense. They took the show into absolute overdrive. I found the plot riveting.

I however found episodes 13 and 14 very distressing, especially the final 20 minutes of so of episode 14. And at the end .. christ I feel pale after what happened to Sean. With all the blood that was just so incredibly macabre and harrowing.

Part of me hopes this season is just a dream, because apart from being depressing and that I really feel for my characters, some of the situations seem almost unrealistic.

Bring on the back half of season 5, please! Let me find that all my characters are okay.

TV Guide Interview with Jessalyn Gilsig

WARNING: Stop reading if you haven't seen last night's Nip/Tuck!

Talk about going out with a bang. On last night's Nip/Tuck, Christian's unhinged, sex-addicted ex-lover Gina plummeted to her death while the two were mid-coitus on her apartment building's roof. Luckily, Jessalyn Gilsig is alive and well and ready to dish about her character's bizarre (even by Nip/Tuck's freakish standards) swan song.

What was your reaction when you found out how you were being killed off?
Jessalyn Gilsig: I thought it was so brilliant. And so sad. She finally expressed [her true feelings] to Christian and then she falls off the building. [Laughs]

What was it like shooting the scene?
Gilsig: We were in downtown L.A. and it was cold. The stunt girl did one take before me, and it looked so [funny] when she fell off the edge of the building that I burst into hysterics. I think I might've ruined the take. They set it up so perfectly; it was so unexpected. It was so bizarre.

Did series creator Ryan Murphy tell you why he killed Gina off?
Gilsig: He didn't, actually. In typical Ryan fashion he was like, "It's Nip/Tuck. You can come back as much dead as you can alive." I could always come back and haunt Christian.

Were you disappointed?
Gilsig: I was. I loved this character very much. She's been so good to me, and the show's been so good to me. It was always very exciting to read the scripts, because you never knew what was going to happen.

Anything stand out?
Gilsig: The scene where I had to wax Kimber. It was something I could never conceive of. Who would think of that? As a place to go to work and as a character to play, I'm really going to miss her. It was such an incredible job for me from the very beginning.

At least you got a memorable send-off.
Gilsig: I was so relieved. But I was like, "She better get a funeral, 'cause I don't want them over surgery, like, 'By the way, Gina's dead.'"

Switching topics, you recently ended an arc on Friday Night Lights. Any chance you'll go back?
Gilsig: Nobody said anything. They didn't kill me, so that's good. It's an incredible show to work on. I was actually shooting Nip/Tuck and Friday Night Lights simultaneously, which was challenging, if only because FNL shoots in Austin. Also, the two shows are so different in their production styles. Nip/Tuck is very stylized, and we rehearse a lot and work out our marks. There's a sense of control to it. And Friday Night Lights is the exact opposite. It's very loose. They're shooting with three handheld cameras at all times and you can walk wherever you want. It was really wild to do the two at the same time. I'm a big fan of Friday Night Lights, so I was really excited to work on it. I really love Connie and Kyle's performances. They're so underrated, especially when you're there and you see the emotional cartwheels that they do. It's the best representation of marriage I've ever seen on television; it's so authentic.

What are you up to now? Waiting for the strike to end?
Gilsig: Yeah. I just try to remind myself that this happened before [in 1988], and the industry does recover. I think it'll be different, but maybe we needed some change anyway. But it made me realize how vulnerable I am and how dependent I am on this industry. It's a real eye-opener.

Ausiello: I'll do no such thing. But I will tell you that the death occurs early next year and it's an awful way to go — even by Nip/Tuck standards.

BTW, good and bad news regarding how the strike's affecting McNamara/Troy. As you'll recall, 22 episodes were ordered last year, to be divided into two seasons. The good news is that all 14 eps for Season 2 were completed before the strike and will air through Feb. 19. (No new episodes air on Dec. 25, Jan. 1 or Jan. 8. See, I'm not the only one taking off.) The bad news is that the eight episodes for Season 6 have not been written, so they've been postponed indefinitely.

I need a video of either the promo for Everett Poe or a scene from Everett Poe.

Does anybody have access to a video of the part where Christian's got Julia in *quite* the position saying, 'Do you miss THIS?" or "do you remember THIS?"

It was in the promo for Everett Poe and surely in the ep last night. If anybody's got a video of it or the resources to make it a youtube clip, could that be done?

Cat in New York: I like Paula Marshall as Sean's new girlfriend on Nip/Tuck! This seems like it could be a long-term thing, yes?!

Don't get too excited. We asked Dylan Walsh about Dr. McNamara's romantic life this season and he said this: "Sean has several new love interests. He is doing better in life, but I caution you not to get too enthusiastic because his love life, in contrast to Christian's, is still problematic." Walsh went on to tell us that there's a Jacuzzi scene in tonight's episode that's "hard to stomach," but the good doc will keep trying, and he's having some fun, so that's good.

Mitchell in Lanark, Illinois: I heard John Schneider from Smallville is going to be on Nip/Tuck this year. Do you know anything about his character?

Yes, we recently spoke with Mr. Schneider about the role: "I'm the world's most successful porn producer. Ridiculously wealthy. Controlling. And desperately protective of Kimber. He's not a bad guy. Treats everybody really well, but he knows what he wants, knows how to get it and get it right now, whether it's someone or something in regard to cinema." John also said to expect some racy love scenes from him that never would've made the cut on Smallville!
