Bloomington, Indiana's Murder By Death is part horror movie climax, part western barroom brawl, and a dash of wintery and ambling layers reminiscent of the Cure. Their first album, "Like The Exorcist, But More Breakdancing" has been described as "phenomenal" and "an elegant, textured, fluid composition". Few groups have ever utilized their instrumentalization (bass, guitar, drums, piano, and cello) or strived to make such epic and dark music. Aside from their record, they are known for an incredible live show, complete with fire-breathing and ignited drums. Keyboardist Vincent Edwards put it best when he said, "There should always be a place in the world for evil, evil music."
While playing a show in Bloomington, they were noticed by Geoff Rickley, singer in the band Thursday and co-owner of Eyeball Records, who offered to put out their album. The five members of Murder By Death had met up and formed the band only four months before, having come from all over the country, as well as from drastically different musical backgrounds. Murder By Death is "post-everything" [lostatsea.net] and "defies comparison" [thepin-up.com], yet despite their uniqueness they've been well received by crowds of every scene.
They've played with every type of band, from acoustic acts to scream-core, sharing the stage with low-key bands like Interpol, American Analog Set, Aloha, Pinback and Dianogah to Rasputina, Shipping News, The Lawrence Arms, Milemarker and The Faint, to tours with heavier bands such as Ten Grand, My Chemical Romance and Thursday.
