Take part in the Meine Liebe Quickfire Challenge (Round #5)

Get ready for the next quickfire! Last round brought forth amusing responses and some various uses of "in vino veritas" ^_^

Quickfire challenge #5:
Write 3 to 6 lines with the keyword dignity and / or suspicious.

Mine is a 2x6 chain, one is related to the other. Admittedly, I'm really stretching the 6 line limit this time XD

* * * * *

At the end of his monologue, everyone was still confused as ever.
"Could you repeat that. Slowly. One more time ?" Eduard ventured, for the sake of everyone's peace of mind.
Orpherus looked frustrated, but obliged.
All eyes were fixed on the suspicious shirt of deep violet silk he was wearing, even as the agitated blonde spun a convoluted tale of a fountain, a duel, Byzantine civil reforms, the demise of several aquatic plants and Lui's "accidental" trip.
"I was soaked! And then the Duchess..... Lui's mother......." Orphe gestured at the shirt as if trying to make a point, the overlong sleeves slipping pathetically down his arm.
Eduard's resolve - if there was indeed any - to preserve his friend's dignity died with a tell-tale tremor of shoulders and stifled sounds, forcing Naoji to kick him. Hard. Under the table.

* * * * *

"Don't be ungrateful."
"I'm not ungrateful," replied the blonde obstinately.
"Then you're being childish." Ludwig turned away from the view outside, long locks suspiciously damp, but a picture of fashionable dignity. "Would you rather my mother ignored you ? Refused her hospitality and be shamed in front of half the country's nobles ?"
"You pushed me in." Orpherus stood, his tone accusing. He was decked in evening finery - in Ludwig's signature colors - which fit him rather well in more ways than one (Camus turned out to be a genius with pins, you see).
From the windows came a sound that was altogether too dignified to be a snort. "And then threw myself in after you ?"
They met halfway across the room, glaring. Neither broke their gaze for the longest time. "There's a speck of leaf in your hair," Orpherus said finally, with no small amount of satisfaction, turning on his heel before the other could respond.

* * * * *

After some thought, I feel it may be better for the quickfire if there was a longer interval in between each one, that is, one week or so, sometimes depending whenever I'm free. This pacing will hopefully give everyone enough time to participate in the quickfire challenges and still work on your homework, studies, icon-making, fanfiction (hopefully!) or other stuff that you usually do ^_^

*laughs* Orphe in Lui's shirt! 8D If that was the case, Orphe would have made it as one of the best dressed in your questionnaire the previous post.

Uh but I don't really understand what happened to Lui's mother, Lui and Orphe @.@ How does it all link together?

My attempt ^^
~~~~~~
He rose up from the chair with dignity.
Eduard raise a suspicious eyebrow in his direction.
Camus said gently, "Lui, don't force yourself if you can't."
"What are you talking about?" Lui said coolly, using his utmost willpower not to wince in pain.
Orphe folded his arms, a faint smirk on his face. "Don't deny it, all of us saw you sit on that chair with the pin cushion."
~~~~~~

And I poke fun of Lui again ^^; But I thought that it would be quite like Lui to keep his composure no matter what happens :)

Yes I think this might be better...more breathing space in between ^_^

He would have been thought of as one of the best dressed, but it's probably beneath his dignity to accept this praise since he wore Lui's clothes out of necessity and not by his own choice XD

The two of them were at Ludwig's home (actually all five of them were there, to attend a party that was due to start). In an impromptu duel outside, Lui and Orphe went tumbling into the fountain (because Lui tripped and "sort of" got Orphe involved XD), soaking both men to the skin. Naturally when Lui's mother heard of this she shanghai-ed kindly insisted Orphe change and wear some of Lui's clothes, and he wasn't really in the position to refuse. If that isn't horrifying enough, if one remembers that Lui is *taller* than Orphe, one will deduce that the clothes will not fit well, such as, the sleeves will be too long. Ed found all this insanely funny of course XD

And again, I'm done in by my own abstract writing *sigh*

Your attempt was ridiculously funny, but I feel too bad for Lui to laugh harder, you see ^_^;; I was strangely reminded of princess and the pea however...... So if from the land of Kuchen originated a bizzare fairytale about the prince Duke-to-be and the pincushion, we know how it all started don't we ? *sideways glance at Orpherus* XD

Yes I think he wouldn't want to accept the praise XD

Ah my bad ^^; Sometimes I really have a hard time comprehending English *orz* Thanks for clarifying! ^_^ Somehow I thought that Orphe fell into the fountain due to Lui's mother, and Lui followed him o.O But I really like the idea of Orphe in deep violet silk shirt...an interesting change from his usual colours! :D

I feel for Lui too ^^; He's always my "sacrificial lamb"! Lol that's an interesting idea, the story of Princess & the pea starring Lui as the delicate heir to the Dukedom XD

That one once again made me burst into giggles...I completely forgot that Dad was asleep. Anyway, here's my response. It's more like sentences than six lines...

It was all too suspicious.
Orpherus was certain something was going on when Camus handed him another bouquet of flowers as his birthday gift.
No matter what, Orpherus decided not to give the rose any juicy gossip concerning his own private matters.
He was still trying to maintain his sense of dignity after an intoxicated Camus had told quite a few of the female students that he sings 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' whenever he bathed with his favourite rubber ducky.
However, he tried to express sincere gratitude so as not to hurt his friend's feelings.
The gratitude was soon forgotten when Marin handed him a pink rubber ducky with a white ribbon around its neck.

This was kind of a sequel to my response concerning an intoxicated Camus spreading certain truths that his roses tell him. As for Marin giving Orphe the pink rubber ducky, I had to do it! *begs Orphe muse for forgiveness*

I just laughed out loud hard. I'm still trying not to look like I'm giggling away >.>
Orphe bathes with a rubber ducky <3 and sings such a...cute song. Hardly the dignified image of a future leader.

AHAHAHA! Orphe's secret is much, MUCH worse than I imagined ~ XD
And Marin's gift took the cake. Poor Orphe! Lui will never let him live it down.

With sequels you could actually compile everything into a "proper" fic and post it separately. Of course the number of Meine Liebe contributions at FF.Net is rather slim too

“Dear Lord, save us from the terror of the Hungarians.” Naoji quoted before smirking and taking a sip of his tea.
“Lohengrin. Do at least try a little, dear.”
Naoji ground his teeth in frustration. “Now let the pleasures-“
“Of Hell be my choice? Tannhäuser.”
Their game was interrupted unexpectedly when Eduard stepped up behind Naoji, patted him consolingly on the shoulder and whispered soto voice: “Don’t worry; I’ve always suspected that Lui thinks it would be beneath his dignity not to be able to quote Wagnerian opera in it’s entirety.”

+++++

“Real nobility is based on scorn, courage, and profound indifference.” Orpherus put his nose in the air theatrically as he said it.
“Since when do you quote French philosophers, Orphe?”
“He doesn’t, he’s quoting our Camus instead.” Ludwig winked.
“I could have said something about staking my pride and reputation on things I suppose.” Orpherus conceded as he helped himself to Ludwig’s apple strudel absently.
“Could you indeed?”
Eduard sipped his tea quietly; of course he’d always suspected that a good portion of Orpherus’ grand pronouncements were prone to being a bundle of quotations.

+++++

The sight of Naoji hunched miserably over his breakfast troubled Ludwig far more than he’d like to let on, especially as he made his way over and Naoji didn’t even look up.
“He’s feeling squamous again.” Camus interjected, catching up to his cousin.
“Oh, for goodness- Isn’t this sort of behaviour beneath his station or some such?”
Which caught Naoji’s attention as evinced by a glare and dire mutterings.
Ludwig took his place opposite with a sigh. “Naoji? I’m beginning to suspect that you simply read too much Lovecraft.”

+++++

The sounds of gunfire were the first thing Eduard and Orpherus heard as they approached the Lichtenstein estate.
It would have been entirely distressing if not for Ludwig’s dour expression as he strode out to greet them.
“Let me guess-“ Orpherus began teasingly.
“My mother thinks it entirely beneath her station to purchase pheasant that she hasn’t shot herself.”
It was then that Eduard noticed that Ludwig was carrying a shotgun casually under one arm.
He’d often suspected that the Lichtensteins were at least half crazed.

++++++++++

The third of which may make more sense in conjunction with another drabble titled Linguistics and the last may also be better off alongside Summer.

The German for what Naoji’s quoting would be "Herr Gott, bewahr uns vor der Ungarn Wut!" and “Nun sei der Hölle Lust erkoren”. Orpherus quotes Albert Camus.

++++++++++

And for some characters that I've been neglecting:

“I suspect that you’re lying.”
Beruze smiled thinly. “Isn’t this sort of thing beneath your dignity?” He gestured almost absently at the gun barrel pointed directly at his heart.
And was entirely unprepared for the confused expression that crossed Cavendish’s face or the fact that apparently the man appeared to be genuinely considering the question as he turned on his heel and abruptly walked off.
Perhaps it couldn’t be helped but Beruze was slowly becoming convinced that Britannia simply didn’t make spies like she used to.

+++++

It was entirely shameful way to be losing money, to a schoolboy in a game of cards.
But perhaps there was a way out, after all it had worked before.
“Isn’t this beneath your dignity?”
Cold blue eyes met his unflinchingly. “Not when I’m winning.”
Beruze began to suspect that there might just be something more to this Orpherus boy after all.

Impressive, so many six liners~ There's a lot of things to look at here, but here's my random thoughts.....

- It's difficult to disagree with Eduard about Lui and Wagner.
- The mental image triggered by Orphe and apple strudel in the same sentence is almost too much for me to bear.
- *thinks* Naoji reads H.P. Lovecraft ? *thinks more*
- I was chewing something when I read the pheasant hunting one. I don't think you have the slightest idea how I suffered lol
- Beruze was slowly becoming convinced that Britannia simply didn’t make spies like she used to.. Excellent, and Beruze is probably justified in thinking that way. Unless of course that was really what Isaac intended for him to do.
- Beruze and Orpherus... I'm rather fond of this one, mainly because it's an interesting situation. There's the history classes of course, but really these two rarely face interact without a deadly weapon at hand.

I’m quite fond of the idea that Isaac is both crazy and brilliant into the bargain which is why he’s allowed to run round haemorrhaging intel all over the place. That got fic too but I ought to stop slinging links about after this.
And to first add another requisite shounen-ai disclaimer I did manage to come up with one scenario where Orpherus wasn’t up for doing violence to Beruze but that’s about the only one.

Glad you enjoyed these… what are they anyway? Not exactly drabbles even.

Your stories always make me feel ashamed about my lack of knowledge. Which is pretty good, since I'll be motivated to read more and learn more things in the process ^_^

Good stories as usual. Um but I was wondering, if Lovecraft was not a very prominent writer in his time, how did Naoji know about him? The death of Lovecraft would be around the same period as the time of your story, so I thought Lovecraft's reputation won't be that widespread yet. It's just a thought. Or am I complicating things? It it’s any consolation I’m a PolSci so it’s my business to store up details in unrepentant pedantry really.

Lovecraft is of course a very specific author for Naoji to be reading but he has a niche interest and he’s reading the various stories published in English, possibly first procured from his sponsor who mysteriously has the means to acquire just about anything via British facilitated enquires. Joseph Foster is a suspiciously trilingual fellow who has far too much influence for somebody who isn’t Strahl and claims to just be a doddering old man or at least that’s the way I write it. Naoji’s only just spymaster in training after all and he’s got to learn how to get the job done from somewhere.
On a less pseudo-canon note though, Lovecraft was published by then though in periodicals and in that respect if Naoji was specifically reading English language bizarre tales magazines then Lovecraft is something he might well have stumbled across.

I guess it is somewhat of a consolation :) It's amazing how you put in all the facts into your fics!

Ah the idea of Naoji being a spymaster in training is really interesting. If that was the case, I guess Mr Foster would be able to get his hands on Lovecraft's stories ^_^
Your explanation makes sense.. But I'm surprised that Naoji reads such stories...bizarres tales. Hmm. I guess I didn't make my question very clear, actually I was puzzled as to why Naoji and Lui both knew Lovecraft since they were in Europe, which gave me the impression Lovecraft can be considered well-known to them. But I suppose Lui probably looked through what Naoji was reading, and learned of this writer :)

Occasionally, Naoji even does shoggoth impressions. And yes, Ludwig did just glance over Naoji’s books once he got curious about what sort of things Naoji read and was swapping with Eduard on occasion. Ludwig himself prefers to read Dumas though not in the original French, which is why he has his own copies and doesn’t borrow from Camus.

Lui accepted the allegations about his family’s suspicious activities against the government without uttering a word of defense.

“Fool’s dignity is what you are waltzing around with!” Orphe pushed Lui to the wall and his lithe body pressed too closed but he didn’t care, glaring at Lui’s purple gaze.

“You’re angered at my stance but you should be overjoyed! We rarely had uninterrupted moments alone to enjoy each other’s company at the academy.” Lui stated before claiming Orphe’ lips with his own.
