    UN climate change week
    The first of February 2007:
Participate in the biggest mobilization of Citizens Against Global Warming!
    The Alliance for the Planet [a group of environmentalassociations] is calling out to all citizens;
5 minutes of electrical rest for the planet.
People all over the world should turn off their lights and electrical appliances on the first of February 2007 between for New York 1.55 pm and 2.00 pm, for London 18.55 and 19.55 for Paris, Bruxelles, Italy etc between 19.55 and 0.00.This is not about saving 5 minutes worth of electricity for that one day, this is about calling on the attention of the
media, politicians, and social figures, telling them of the importance of immediateaction! 5 minutes of electrical down time for the planet: this does not take long, and costs nothing, and it will show the electoral candidates for
2007 that global warming is an issue that need to enter the political debate.
    Thank you all,

250 employees of Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust will take their first day's strike on Wednesday January 31st. This follows a 91.6% ballot result in favour of strike action.

The strike action will be taken by 250 community nurses, occupational therapists and team secretaries to stop the cuts in community mental health teams which include:

Reduction in staffing numbers in community mental health teams and consequent higher caseloads, and a reduction in service to keep people well,
job freeze on all nursing posts in the Trust as there will be 33 less nursing posts and 8 less OT posts (yet they can afford an expansion of 24 extra managers at a cost of ?1.25million!!),
downgrading of most nursing, occupational therapy and admin staff,
    possibilities of complusory redundancies,
possible privatisation of four community teams,
closure of one of the south Manchester old age day centres and 7day support team.

There will be picket lines at
Chorlton House, 70 Manchester Rd, Chorlton,

    News-sheet.
Last month I started a newsletter about progressive issues around Greater Manchester. Starting work on the 3rd issue now, I realised I hadn't taken the obvious step of making a journal for it: [info]thebookofswamp. The info is all on the user page.

It's on one a month and is all posted behind cuts, and I post references for everything in it. So far it's covered such stuff as fast food, sweatshops, supermarkets, climate change, allergies... and the World Cup. Here's a sample:
    I.R.Terrorist
Manchester is presently patting itself on the back for being hit with the biggest ever IRA bomb ten years ago (and flogging loads of memorabilia crap about it). Meanwhile the media is destroying Ken Loach’s new film about the British “Black and Tan” atrocities in 1920s Ireland - The Wind that Shakes the Barley - for being “anti-British”, finally adopting the lingo they have used for anti-Bush critics for years. There is very little to suggest that what Loach depicts did not happen. Our inability to see a connection between our foreign policy and the frustration and fear which gives rise to extremism will doom us to violence forever. "Maybe if you tell the truth about the past, you might tell the truth about the present." – Ken Loach. See www.cornerhouse.org for showings of The Wind that Shakes the Barley.
    And another:
    Stressco
Earlier this year, Tesco applied for planning permission to build a hypermarket on over 80,000 square feet of land which is presently a playing field for people and wildlife, on Chester Road in Trafford, just behind Stretford leisure centre. In the 1960s the field was converted from a car park in response to residents calls for recreational space and a reduction in traffic. The area has no need for such a large development, as there are currently 24 supermarket branches located within the catchment area of the proposed site. This is just one point where the proposal would breach planning regulations that have to be met on all out-of-town developments. The majority of local residents oppose the Tesco, because they see it would destroy land, diversity, business in the town centre and jobs. Every study ever conducted on the topic has shown that for each supermarket that opens, a net several hundred jobs are lost. This shouldn’t be surprising – think of how the supermarkets brag about their efficiency, including in employing and timetabling people. Efficiency is something we should all strive for, surely? In this case it’s only good if you’re an executive for a supermarket, or if the only things you value in life are low prices and having everyone working to their absolute physical limit with no social interaction whatsoever. Although they’ve been defeated in the past, supermarkets can employ the best lawyers and spokespeople with ease, so campaigners need to stand up and make a noise if they don’t want Trafford councillors to roll over and beg for mercy. A public inquiry began on 27th June, at which Tescos agents suggested the council officers report be amended when it looked like things were turning against them – one councillor said he had never heard such a rude suggestion in 17 years. The council planning committee has voted that it would refuse the application if it could, but the inquiry has been adjourned until September due to new retail evidence. 2070 signatures opposing the development were handed in. For more information see www.tescopoly.org.uk and go to Local campaigns > NorthWest.
Thanks for having a look! Oh, and you can pick it up in all good places, including The Basement.

Site of interest for Guerilla gardeners
I've just found this website for buying cheap native trees in the UK. I thought I'd share it here in case there are any guerilla gardeners in our midst. I don't know if these prices are particularly cheap but they're affordable even for me.

New ALF prisoners need support (x-posted all over)
Please get letters in the post to these compassionate people who have had their liberty stolen from their by this perverted society which sees fit to imprison those who go against the grain and try to make a difference to animals!

Jon Ablewhite, John Smith and Kerry Whitburn were sentenced to 12 years today at Nottingham Crown Court and Josephine Mayo to 4 years. The sentences are in relation to Newchurch Farm. Jon, John and Kerry are on their way back to HMP Nottingham - their prison numbers remain the same (details below).
Josephine is being taken to HMP Peterborough:
Josephine Mayo (new prisoner), HMP Peterborough, Saville Road, Westfield, Peterborough PE3 7PD.
We do not have her prison number at the moment.

It is vital to remember those who are currently incarcerated and ensure they receive as much support as possible. It is also vital to remember that we owe it to these brave people (but first and foremost to the animals) to get out there and make a difference to the animals! Demos are happening all the time in and around Manchester, get out there and make a difference!!!

*urgent* Get you're hands in your pockets
National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns went bust on Saturday the 4th of February when all funding for the full time staff and running costs of all offices came to an end. With immediate effect we have to announce the closure of NCADC's North East & Scotland office on Tuesday 28th February and barring a miracle the closure of the North West Office in Manchester will follow at the end of March and complete closure of NCADC in May.

As it stands NCADC is in the process of winding up the organisation that for the last ten and a half years has been at the forefront of fighting deportations and opposing the Governments 'cruel and inhumane' immigration laws.
How to help save this essential organisation )
