Hello!
Hi everyone! I'm new here. I do not have a lab...yet! But My husband and I are looking to get one soon for our first anniversary. We hope to find a female lab puppy in the next couple of months.

1. What type of Labrador do you own, or are looking to own? (chocolate, black, yellow) Black! Yellow is my second choice.

2. Is your Lab a show dog, household pet or service dog? She would be a household pet.

3. What turned you on to the breed? Well, my husband has always wanted one, but everyone told me that they were dumb dogs, until I started to research them. They seem like amazing pets and very intelligent. I've wanted a dog that is mellow and well behaved, but also loves to play. Not to mention labs are so ADORABLE!

4. Anything else you'd like us to know: Why is it when I tell people that we are thinking about getting a lab, they laugh or say "Aren't those dogs really stupid?" I don't get it. Where are they getting this from.

Maybe it's just what the folks think where you live. labs are highly respected and known for their intelligence where i live. the one thing i do need to stress is that they are not mellow as pups and some into adulthood. you do need to work with them everyday and have patience to have a well behaved dog. I was lucky that i don't work and am with my dog all the time. he is very smart and a very good boy and i love him to pieces, but as a puppy, he was really far from mellow! Most like to chew, so have a ton of chew toys for them or be prepared for them to chew something of yours.

hahaha! maybe! i think they are great dogs. i totally understand that she won't be mellow when she's a puppy. and i can't wait to teach her manners and tricks. thanks for the chew toy tip! :]

good luck, you won't be sorry. i love this dog so much and i am so happy to have him. he is 15 months old now and at one year of age, i took him to an obedience class, once a week (for five weeks) and that taught me what to do. he still has his moments but in general he is the best dog ever and is always at my side. they are known as great family dogs too. there is not a vicious bone in him and i think that they are all like that. you'll have to post a pic when you get one!

WOW, who told you they were dumb dogs. They are one of the brightest and Black labs are one of the top picks for hunting dogs. A family I use to babysit for back in the day bought a female black lab (for a house pet) but the father duck hunts and used her as a hunting dog.

That's nuts!

Well you and your hubbie have great taste. Our lab is the best. I can't tell you how many people walk up to him while we are out to comment on how well behaved and smart he is.

I have a greeting card making business and my dog..... he watches me lay the card in the sleeve of the envelope. Well one day I had finished a card with my dog sitting next to me but hadn't grabbed a envelope yet... what does my dog do? He nudges an envelope towards me until I pick it up.

Good luck on finding your lab!

People probably think they're not the brightest because of their doofy portrayal. Labs are goofballs, but they can be block-headed, stubborn and, in their youth, hyper and distracted. Doesn't mean they're dumb, though. :)

Congratulations! I'm sure that reading posts from this community will inspire you even more to get a Lab (or 2 or 10!) The idea that Labs are stupid is surprising to me, I've always heard that they were very smart, friendly and wonderful - although with variation across individual dogs. Perhaps it's a "Marley and Me" effect?

LOL. I think cause they're goofy and drooly. But dumb? No way. My Lab Andy can tell a fake Vuitton from a real one, and which set of earphones are the most expensive ones in a lineup. :D

I can see where people would get that idea.

My lab mix has a dumb looking face. And she does a lot of silly things. I think she's pretty smart, though.

hey, i just thought of this to tell your relatives when they tell you labs are stupid...... if they are so stupid, then why are they the #1 dog to be used as service dogs.... also they are used by the ATF, DEA and homeland security, to sniff out drugs and bombs.....

LOL! "Stupid" isn't exactly the word I'd use.. but Labs are so inquisitive and just plain GOOFY all around that sometimes it seems they don't learn anything/keep getting into the same things over and over again. Not to mention the almost permanent and extremely ADORABLE 'Not all there' look they have.

But my first lab was particularly smart, she could open doors, fetch specific things, and even learn to pick out different shapes and colors (greyscale gradient for her I'd suppose), play "Dumb School" (a game where you hide something in your hands behind your back and then bring your closed fists around and the dog/person will have to choose the right hand with a paw NOSES ARE CHEATING lol) and a slew of other things no one would ever expect from 'just a dog'.

And honestly, all that took a heck of a lot less training than you'd think. :P
