Hey guys!
It's been a boring, dumb Friday around here. I've been doing laundry and cleaning the kitchen. :( So, to cheer up Friday, let's play a game. :D
Comment on this post. In the title of the comment, put your Lab's name and gender. In the body of the comment, put the youngest picture you have of him/her with the age, then the oldest picture you have of him/her. Make a new post for each of your puppies! Let's see how they changed over the years!

10:47 am - Swimmy swim swim swim!

We took the dogs to the lake a few days ago. Cain (the black puppy) is still not swimming so much, but he will paddle around a little. Calypso (the yellow puppy) on the other hand, is just a power swimmer. She did freak out pretty bad when we got there. Some guys were putting in at the dock, so we didn't want her to go down to the water and get tangled up in there stuff. That REALLY concerned her and she tugged very hard on her leash. :/ Makes me realize that I REALLY need to work on leash manners.
Cain is really really photogenic. I wish I were a better photographer! <3
Here's a few cute one of them.

10:26 pm - Wisdom Panel

We got Sam at the pound, and have always wondered exactly what breeds he had in his lineage. He looks enough like a lab that we knew he was mostly lab, but there was something about the shape of his face and body that made us think he had other breeds mixed in as well.
So, for my birthday, my husband had the Wisdom Panel (http://www.wisdompanel.com/) test done on Sam.
It turns out he is mostly lab, with some Rottweiler and a trace amount of Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. The rottweiler part is not surprising, but we were shocked at the Petit Basset part -- they're long-haired and only 30 pounds! Oh well, at least now we know why he points. :-)
Has anyone else tried this with their dog?
And, a picture of the dog in question...

Hey Labby Lovers!
On the Fourth of July, my family always goes down to visit a really good family friend of ours. He's got a lot of wooded land with awesome trails, a big creek, and a POND.
Like most Labs, Calypso's favoritest thing in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD (other than trying to eat poop :( ) is WATER. Every time we take her to the local lake, she leaps into the water with great abandon and it's hard to drag her out.
At our friend's house, we let all the dogs off lead (unless we're shooting) and let them play as much as they want. This year, we had four dogs. Cain (7 week old Lab whom we'd only had two days), Dandy (my mom's 1.5 year old well behaved pug), Calypso (my 6-month old fairly well behaved lab), and Sadie (8 year old golden retriever who's only "well behaved" because she's too old and lazy to be naughty--you know the type!)
Calypso was in HEAVEN. She spent maybe two hours of the 12 we were there out of the water--and part of that was because we were shooting and didn't want any of the dogs to run downrange. She leaped off of the dock into the water over and over and over. Sometimes, we'd throw balls for her, sometimes she'd jump off to go swim with anyone who was out there, and sometimes she'd just jump because she's a water bug!
My favorite, though, was when she went swimming with my mom--or Grandma Ann.
Warning! Five huge pics under the cut! You can also see Kippy's spot really well in a lot of these.
( Splish, splash! )
And as a side note, I picked up a giant bag of Nutro Large Puppy Controlled Growth puppy food. So far, everyone loves it!
I'm planning on making a collage of pictures for the pups that I'm going to hang on the wall next to their pedigrees with baby pictures, six-month pictures, year old pictures, and then older pictures as they grow. I'm trying to decide if I like the one where's she jumping with Mom best, or the one that has Dandy in the picture. Does anyone have a preference for any of these?

Hi all, this is my Duke, my family always had dogs when i was growing up but they were guard dogs, and were always caged up during the day. so we never spent time with them, i personally always wanted my own dog, and now, i do!! I just got duke and this was the first glimpse i had of him and am already in love, he had to remain with his mom untill now, he arrives tomorrow and am sooo excited, however he is my first dog and he is a puppy and i am going to need all the help i can get, my greatest concern is with the housebreaking, because that is the biggest worry of the people am living with, he is in his fifth week and i dont know if i start now, or i wait. also am not comfortable putting a leash on him when he is still so young, but someone told me, if i don't do it now he will not want to wear it when he grows. Please help, Patricia.

11:34 am - Nom nom nom....food question!
|

whitefootwolf
|
So what do you feed your labs?
We've been feeing Purina One Puppy Chow, but I'd like to switch them to a higher quality dog food. I've heard that Blue is good...but what do you feed?
Both of our puppied are probably going to grow up large, with the female projected to reach around 100lbs. She is also going to be a 'working dog', as I'm hoping to get into Agility with her at some point. Hopefully soon! <3 Our trainers have a 'puppy agility' class that's supposed to be a lot of fun, and she's already taken a liking to the agility gear!
Anyway--let me know what your dog loves!

Hi, everyone! The last time I did any sort of update on Marley was back in February when he got sick. We went through two really hellish weeks of squirming and crying and vet appointments.
It turns out he had a pretty severe food allergy. We put him on an elimination diet and eventually switched him to Nutro's sensitive stomach formula. He's been doing great ever since. He's also on a glucosamine supplement since he was also diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia.
I thought I'd share some pictures of my happy boy feeling better the past few months. Thanks for all of your support. I thought the worst would happen but you all helped me a lot. :)

10:27 pm - Hey, ya'll...

I realized that I'd forgotten to post my intro!
1. What type of Labrador do you own, or are looking to own? (chocolate, black, yellow) Calypso is a 6 month old female yellow lab with a black mosaic, and Cain is a two month old male black lab.
2. Is your Lab a show dog, household pet or service dog? They are both currently housepets, though I plan to get into Agility with Calypso!
3. What turned you on to the breed? My husband! When I married him, he had a giant black Labrador named Thor. Thor-baby was so terrifying to me at first. My family's alwasy had small to medium dogs (boarder collie, pug, etc) so this giant 100 lb creature was very scary for me. After we started dating, I got to know the big lug and really fell in love with him. Since the husband's ex left him and took their other dog, Thor was really lonely. After we got married, we picked up Calypso. Recently, we had to put Thor down due to a very bad, very quickly escalating injury. We got Cain shortly there after as Calypso was driving us insane because she was lonely. Dogs really are pack creatures!
4. Anything else you'd like us to know: Well....haha, I think I went over most of it already. :)
I really love my dogs. I didn't think I ever would as I am supposed to be a "cat person". :D But, when she was about four months old, Calypso got stolen. We got home Sunday afternoon to find that our fence had been partially knocked down. Calypso was gone and Thor was waiting sadly under our carport. I did everything you're supposed to--fliers, ads, calling vets, wandering around neighborhoods, etc. In desperation after three days, I sent an e-mail at work begging people to let me know if they'd seen her. (Our house was located near the main road, and a lot of my coworkers drove past everyday.)
A coworker called me over lunch to tell me she thought she'd seen my dog with two girls at Quiznos. "Someone recognize a yellow lab? One of THE most common dogs in the area?! Don't be SILLY."
Well, I mentioned Kip has a "mosaic", right? It's an imperfection in a lab when the chromosomes don't split correctly for their coat, giving them markings. Kippy has a mouse-shaped spot on her butt!
I got my beloved dog back and ended up not having to pay the ransom--THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS! "Well, we took her to the vet. And bought her TOYS. She was FILTHY, STARVING, and COVERED IN FLEAS when we found her!" (Yeah, she had bad fleas. The flea meds we'd tried weren't working and we'd been giving her near-daily baths to combat the fleas. Yes, she was filthy. She's a nearly white dog who likes mud. What can you do? And yes, she was starving--she's a baby Labby! They eat their body weight every few hours, lol.)
Anyway. That was a long story. :D

5:56 pm - he's finally getting neutered!

Hi quick question.......my lab Jack is around 5-6 years old (I have to guess b/c we really don't know how old he is) and we have finally gotten around to making an appt for him to get neutered. What will I need to expect? I've never had to get an animal spayed/neutered before. I hear it may be harder on him since he is older? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
p.s. A couple pics of mr Jack are behind ( HERE. )

Hi everyone! I'm new here. I do not have a lab...yet! But My husband and I are looking to get one soon for our first anniversary. We hope to find a female lab puppy in the next couple of months.
1. What type of Labrador do you own, or are looking to own? (chocolate, black, yellow) Black! Yellow is my second choice.
2. Is your Lab a show dog, household pet or service dog? She would be a household pet.
3. What turned you on to the breed? Well, my husband has always wanted one, but everyone told me that they were dumb dogs, until I started to research them. They seem like amazing pets and very intelligent. I've wanted a dog that is mellow and well behaved, but also loves to play. Not to mention labs are so ADORABLE!
4. Anything else you'd like us to know: Why is it when I tell people that we are thinking about getting a lab, they laugh or say "Aren't those dogs really stupid?" I don't get it. Where are they getting this from.

I have never had a lab before that I raised from puppyhood. But now my Maggie Mae turned 3 and she is starting to get a bit of a 'frosty' muzzle. She is very active and healthy, so why would she be getting the white hairs already?

Jake is my chocolate lab and he is 14 months old. My husband had always wanted a lab, he actually wanted a golden, but when we saw Jake, we fell in love with his devilish charm and he came home with us. He was Greg's constant companion and would head out to the farm, or go fishing with Greg everyday. Greg was ill with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension and suddenly became gravely ill. Greg got to enjoy Jake for three months before he passed away. Greg would ask me, " do you love the dog and are you glad that we got him?" My answer was always, yes. I am so happy that Greg got this dog, now he is my companion and my buddy. I don't know what I would do without Jake. Jake is with me all the time, thank goodness I have a king sized bed because Jake, the four cats and me sleep on it. We all miss Greg....... I know Greg would be proud of how Jake has turned out. I posted a picture of Jake "stealing" a pancake from the backyard that I threw out........ my fav pic of him, this describes his personality perfectly!
