(this is in no way related to anyone in this group, I've had this thought for a while and just felt like sharing)
Also, has spoliers about a book!
So, recently I bought this book called Blade Silver about a girl who SI's, the book is a non fiction teenage level read. It was pretty good, until I got to the last few chapters. When the girl ends up going to rehab, she has to follow the 12 steps of recovery, which are very similar to the steps in AA, of which steps 2-12 involve a belief in a higher power. What bothers me, is they state that an addiction, SI included, is beyond a person's control and they can only recover with "god's" help. I really hate this perspective, although a belief in a higher power may help some people choose to quit their addiction, I find it offensive that people think that only a god could let you quit. I am an agnostic, so while I don't disbelieve in a higher power, I question it's existance and am not a very big fan of organized religion because of the politics involved. Also, by saying you are powerless to stop behaving in a certain manner seems like a way of trying to bandaid the situation and make oneself feel better. Needless to say I returned the book, and simply explained that I thought it was innapropriate (I had planned on giving it to a friend after I finished it).
