KITTIE TOURS UK

KITTIE are actually coming to the UK.
Yes. I said it. There is not a thing about this up on their myspace or their official website tours section as far as I can see, and I've been checking these websites in futile expectation for ages now. BUT, a search in wild, forlorn hope let me to go here, where you will find tickets for:

20th OCTOBER LONDON Underworld, Camden
22nd OCTOBER GLASGOW Cathouse
24th OCTOBER BRISTOL Carling Academy Bristol

I have no idea about how likely this is to be cancelled or whatever. I don't even want to assess likelihoods or think about the fact that the Carling Academy Bristol website doesn't actually list the Kittie show yet. I just want to think about getting to see Kittie live at last...

Also, I found a load of good quality videos of the original Spit-era line-up playing live (Suck Choke and there are others), which is cool because I thought you could only get the Ozzfest and Conan appearances. However I didn't know they released a DVD until recently and I don't think that these videos ever showed that high on searches for Kittie until lately. Anyone know if they ever did any other Ozzfest videos other than for the track 'Spit'?

And! If anyone has JustABunchOfFuckedUpKids, I would be amazingly happy if you could upload it!

Has anyone here met the band after shows &c.? What are they like in person?

Canadian metal band KITTIE has announced the departure of bassist Trish Doan.

Doan has been diagnosed with the eating disorder anorexia-athletica-nervosa, which she developed during the recording of KITTIE's "Funeral For Yesterday", Doan's first release with the group.

"It breaks my heart to say goodbye to this family that has given me the best two years of my life," Doan said. "I wish my time with KITTIE did not have to end, but this decision was made based on doctors' orders. Unfortunately, this is the only option that will allow for my full recovery."

Doan has been battling the disease for nearly two years.

"Trish is a part of our family and her talents and friendship will be missed by all of us," said Tara McLeod and sisters Mercedes and Morgan Lander. "We are continuing to be respectful and supportive of Trish's needs during her period of healing. We wish her the best on her road to recovery and will remain close to her throughout this difficult time."

Morgan Lander & Tara McLeod

Besides coping with the usual female rocker stereotypes, the ladies in Kittie have had more than a few obstacles in the past year. The Ontario natives were all set to launch a new label called “Kiss Of Infamy,” but according to vocalist Morgan Lander a certain fire-breathing musician apparently thought that the name hit a little too close to home. Kittie had little choice but to shake it off. The ladies selected the new moniker “X Of Infamy” and soon after released its 4th album Funeral For Yesterday, a release that accentuates the more melodic side of Kittie.

Since the album’s release, there has been yet another big hurdle. News was swirling that bassist Trish Doan would not be participating in this summer’s Sweet Revenge Tour, while Jeff Phillips from Thine Eyes Bleed would be her temporary replacement. Lander and new guitarist Tara McLeod recently spoke openly with UG writer Amy Kelly about Doan’s departure and the continuing evolution of Kittie.

UG: I understand that Trish won’t be able to go on tour with you this year. What happened?

Morgan: She actually has a really bad eating disorder. So we felt it necessary, as well as herself felt it necessary, to take time to reassess the situation and straighten out her priorities, seek help, and get better.

Will she be coming back to the band?

Morgan: Yes, but these things are unpredictable. We are not sure what the situation is going to be. It could be 2 months, 6 months, a year, 2 years before recovery is 100 percent complete. It’s all very up in the air, but we support her 100 percent. We think this is the best thing for her.

Tara, considering this is your first album with the band, were you heavily involved with the songwriting?

Tara: To tell you the truth, when I joined the band about half of the songs were actually already written. So they just handed those over to me and told me to learn them so we could start jamming new songs right away. Morgan and Mercedes (Lander, drums) mostly did this album by themselves. They are the main writers of Kittie, always have been. Just as any new member coming into an established band, they never said, “Add some layers or texture to it.” And I never said, “Hey, I’m going to go ahead and do this.” It just kind of fell together.

After asking if it was okay to write a solo for one song, they started writing in solo parts to the newer songs they were working on and telling me, “Hey, go figure out a little lead for this.” I didn’t write the album. It was definitely an album that Morgan and Mercedes needed to do by themselves, I think. There’s a lot of heart and soul and meaning in the album to them. I pretty much came in as support.

When did you receive the offer to be Kittie’s guitarist?

Tara: I’m from the same town as them and just in the local music scene. I was playing in another band and kind of met their manager. We chatted for a bit and I came over and jammed with the girls. We just came together that way, really.

So is it safe to assume that pretty much all of Kittie’s albums have been written by the Morgan-Mercedes duo?

Morgan: The way that things have happened, it just sort of left Mercedes and I as the foundation of the band, which by no means is a bad thing. I think with us being the main songwriters, it’s always going to sound like a Kittie album. With the addition of Tara, with her outside influences and outside opinions and ideas and the team player attitude and everything, it’s going to open a lot of doors for us. It’s going to make us sound a lot better and it’s all good.

Since the band originally formed over a decade ago, have you noticed a change in audiences’ reaction toward an all-female band?

Morgan: When we’re playing to a crowd, it’s usually our fans and our audience. They react really, really well. I think the criticism or whatever comes in as the media and people that are sort of uneducated as to what we’ve been doing lately as a band. I don’t know whether or not there has been. I mean, since we first started and since our first album came out, there has been a lot of changes in opinion and views. It’s just based on the amount of women in metal now, as opposed to 7 years ago when we released our album or 10 years ago when we first started.

But there’s still definitely a lot of work to do and there’s definitely still a double standard. I think, for us, our purpose is to prove to people that our musical abilities go beyond…

"We're bursting with ideas and we're really excited to get to writing."
Tara: The fact that we’re girls.

Morgan: Yeah, exactly. That’s exactly true. It also goes beyond what people initially saw in this band. When we first started, we were really young, really naïve. Not the best band in the world! I think since then we’ve become a well-oiled machine. We’re players. We’re good at what we do and we’re great songwriters and we’re a great band. I think that is what is going to change people’s opinions. Whether or not people decide, “Well, I don’t like a female’s voice” or “I don’t like women in music…” Whatever. That’s irrelevant.

Tara: I’ve been approached by plenty of bands who said, “You know, I dragged my cousin in, my sister, and my best friend.” They’ve dragged someone they know out to a show who has pretty much prejudged the band. They’ve come to a show and totally changed their mind about the band, just by seeing a live show and giving it a chance and not prejudging a female perspective. That happens a lot. I can’t really blame anybody, really. I mean, it is the first thing you see, the fact that we’re female. It’s really nice when we do get past that and people see that we’re actually talented. It’s also nice to be able to show someone up.

Were you inspired by any female musicians when you first started learning to play guitar?

Morgan: No, definitely not. I think that had a lot to do with the fact that there weren’t really all that many females to look up to out there. Honestly, idolizing just great guitarists in general was what made us be so fearless with our songwriting and our style of playing and the genre of music that we chose. We had no boundaries. We idolized a lot of different styles of music, but there was not any particular female icon that I really looked up to.

Growing up, for Mercedes and I, we definitely knew that this was the path that we were going to take when we were old enough to do it. We used to make up songs. Back then, we idolized bands like Van Halen, Ted Nugent, a lot of bands that my parents were listening to. We sort of got into more guitar-driven styles of hard rock and metal based on my parents’ interests. Once we were able to develop our own taste and got to an age where we wanted to blaze our own trail and make up our minds, it was bands like Tool or Helmet, Alice In Chains, Pantera, Metallica, Slayer. We were like, “Wow, these people are amazing at what they do and we’d like to do it, too.”

Tara: We were pretty much raised on the same music. My parents were not musicians, but they’re big music fans. There was always the classic rock going. I actually had one of my parents’ friends kind of mentor me with guitar. He would let me come and jam with his band. I got to listen to a lot of great music through him and started listening to a ton of Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. Those 2 guitar players are 2 guys that I idolized for a really long time. I tried to learn a lot of their songs and steal their tricks!

Tara, your website is very cool in the way it shows all of the different guitars you’ve played over the years. Have you recently added to the list?

Tara: I’m playing a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop. I’ve never played a guitar with a better neck. I was playing an Explorer before. Once I tried a Les Paul, I’ve been just hooked on it. It’s amazing. It has the original pickups in it. It’s a nice crunchy tone, but it’s really full, which is what I like about it. It totally has a classic rock sound to it, which is what I’m definitely into. So it’s perfect.

Morgan, how about you?

Morgan: I’m actually using a custom Hamer Vector. For me, I’ve always been drawn to the V-shape. Over the years I’ve tried a number of different brands of V’s. I’ve played everything from ESP, Gibson, BC Rich, a homemade one from a guy from London even. I got a tour of the Hamer shop and I really liked the personability of the company. It’s a really small company and they really just want to work with the artist and get exactly what you want into it.

For me, the size of the guitar is definitely a factor because I’m really small! It’s not short scale or anything, but it’s the weight and everything for me. It definitely always plays a factor into choosing a guitar. And also, it just sounds great! It is a great guitar. I know Hamer has been around for a while, and they’re mostly known for their 80’s kind of metal band kind of sound. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that retro kind of sound. I think it works well with what we’re trying to do, which is balance heavy metal with melody.

"Our purpose is to prove to people that our musical abilities go beyond the fact that we're girls."
Are there certain effect or pedals that play a big part in your recording process or live setup?

Morgan: I think the difference comes from with the dynamic of the song and the way that it’s written, rather than switching from different sounds of different pedals. We’re pretty basic in terms of our live setup and also the setup in the studio. The change and the dynamic comes more with the way the song is written, as well as my voice and that sort of thing. There are not really too many songs that we have now that we go from heavy to clean. I don’t think we’ve done that for a very long time. For my setup, it’s pretty much just basically plugging right in to triples.

Tara: For me, it’s a really basic rock and roll setup really. I just use a Vox wah, Boss DD-3, and a Blues Driver.

When you’re on the road, do you find time to write songs or at least bounce ideas off of each other?

Morgan: Traditionally we’ve always held back our ideas until we’ve had time to let them go. This time around it’s a little bit different. We’re bursting with ideas and we’re really excited to get to writing. We all bounce ideas off of each other and I think the next album’s writing process is going to be slightly different. I think Tara has a lot of really great ideas and it’s really refreshing to have somebody that has an outside opinion if Mercedes and I ever were to get into a rut. I highly doubt that…

Tara: I was going to say! I don’t see that happening!

Morgan: Knock on wood. It is really wonderful to have somebody that has the best interest of the band in mind and wants the band to succeed and evolve musically, contribute and be a team player. That’s what we’ve always wanted with members of this band. I’m really excited for the writing for our new album because we have a lot of great ideas. It’s going to be pure evil.

And you have your own label now, too.

Morgan: Yes, we do.

I’ve seen it called both “Kiss Of Infamy Records” and “X Of Infamy Records.” Which one is correct?

Morgan: X Of Infamy. Actually, what happened with that was that it was originally Kiss Of Infamy. We ended up getting a Cease And Desist from KISS’ lawyer, from Gene Simmons. He was concerned that somehow KISS fans would be confused by our label’s name, which I’m totally baffled by. But he does own all the rights under the umbrella of the music genre and entertainment business. He owns the word “KISS” for everything. It’s actually rather flattering even that he acknowledged our existence. Obviously it wasn’t something that was that big of a deal. We decided to change the name. X is the universal symbol for kiss anyway, so we sort of got our way. We just got around it a little bit.

Are you excited about your upcoming Power Box Festival gig? It looks to be an impressive all-ladies lineup.

Morgan: I think it’s going to be a really, really good time. There are a lot of bands that we’re familiar with, and a lot of bands that I think I’ve seen play before. They keep adding bands to it! It’s a good cause and a wonderful celebration of female musicians. We’re just excited to be there. The guy who is setting it up and putting it together, he’s doing a great job.

Do you foresee Kittie releasing a live DVD in the future?

Morgan: We’ll see what the future brings. We have the tour coming up and that’s about 5 weeks long. After that, we’re hoping to perhaps finally get back to Europe, hopefully do some South American dates and perhaps some Central America, Mexico kind of stuff. We’ve done quite a few tours so far in the States, so we really just want to let our fans know abroad that we still love them and that we still care. Regardless, we’re going to keep on playing, just have a good time with it, and rock out.

Ultimate-Guitar.Com © 2007

KITTIE

August 19, 2007

Baltimore, Maryland

Sonar

The thing that I’ve always loved & hated about going to rock concerts is that you never know what you’re gonna see...some nights you see a standard show that’s very similiar to ever other performance & some nights there are technical difficulties like a guitar string breaking or gear breaking down, which is also kinda standard when a band is playing on a tour, but then there’s the “other” things that you see that make a rock concert really bad...I’ve seen alot of things happen at shows & tonight I saw a first & it’s a really thing I have to report as well.

The band Kittie were headlining a show tonight @ Sonar in Baltimore, Maryland, & I (Bob Suehs) pride myself in the fact that I’ve had a long running, working friendship with the band & I always cover their shows when they play this area & we always do an in-person interview, & we have a good repor...tonight I had another great interview with the band (Morgan, Mercedes & Tara) & I figured it was going to be another great performance from Kittie, as usual, BUT, this particular show was cut short by some asshole who decided he was going to grope Morgan.

Ok, let me set it up exactly as I saw it: Morgan jumped off the stage with her mic in hand & stood against the rail on the inside of the barricade that seperated the crowd from the band...I didn’t even see a need for the barricade up until this point, because the crowd was small & it seemed to be a decent crowd with no problems, until some asshole decided to grab Morgan’s boobs when she got up close to the crowd & when I saw it happen, in all honesty, I wasn’t even sure if I saw what I thought I saw..I had to ask other’s what happened & needless to say, this made Morgan erupt...she jumped back on the stage almost immediatly & it was clear from the expression on her face that she was pissed off & upset..Morgan ran to the back of the stage where she grabbed her guitar & the first thing that struck me was the feedback that was coming from her guitar...it was loud & Morgan acted as if she didn’t even notice it because she was pissed off & when her sister Mercede’s got wind of what happened, all hell broke loose & Mercede’s jumped from behind the drum kit & grabbed the mic & began yelling at the asshole that violated her sister. I had my camera in hand while Mercede’s went off at the guy, & because I consider Morgan, Mercedes & Tara to be friends, I will not post the video, but I did post a few stills, & this turned out to be the last song, which was appropriatley enough, “Everything That...” Morgan commented that someone should “beat that guys ass” & sure enough, it DID happen!

Morgan commented that it was sad that the show had to end like that, but she was too upset over the incident, & if that situation wasn’t bad enough, the next 3 minutes are when things got bad though...the crowd knew who groped Morgan & the crowd took it on themselves to rectify the situation, & there was a guy who was beat up pretty freakin’ bad & I actually saw club security people going into the crowd with some sorta club/bat/baton in their hands to break up the situation & this is the first time I’ve ever witnessed a situation where someone in the crowd violated a performer who was trying to connect with the fans, & then the crowd turned into an angry mob & got revenge for their dissed idol.

I personally apologized to Morgan as soon as she came from the backstage area, because Ifelt horrible that she was violated like that & although she was upset, Morgan took it like a trooper & even after that bad situation, she made it a point to come out & sign a few autographs & take pics with her loyal fans. There was definitley a chill of sadness amongst the fans that this incident happened & all I can say is, I’m truly sorry you had to endure this Morgan, you’re one of the sweetest rock star’s I’ve ever met & it’s just sad that this had to happen. It's NEVER ok to violate someone's space like that & it's a sad statement that a great rock show was cut short because some asshole wanted to cop a feel!

I will post my full show review with more pics & my interview that I conducted with the 3 Kittie girls in a few days, so hang tight

OK, here's the deal. I bought two tickets to the Kittie show in Atlanta on Wednesday August 22nd, this wednesday. I live in Fl, and everyone who was supposed to go with me has backed out and I can't make the trip to ATL by myself.

So, I am trying to find someone who will be willing to take the tickets from me. I would only ask for the price of shipping. I would need to know if you wanted them by monday the 21st in order to get the tickets to you in time.

my email is: ladyshini@gmail.com
aim: horriblyinspired

and if you can't get me at either of those, text me at 904.705.1954

thanks

What's your thoughts on it?

I, personally, love it. I think it's Kittie's best album to date. Morgans vocals range from the sweetest singing and amazing harmonies to metal as fuck growls. Tara brings so much to the band with her insane guitar skills..Never thought I would hear a Kittie album with solos and a guitarist that actually plays lead parts rather than just copying Morgan. Trish is great on bass..Everything That Could Have Been and Around Your Heart are awesome.
Morgan and Mercedes..we all know they are amazing already, and they just proved it once again with Funeral For Yesterday, and I love the fact that this time Mercedes actually put some vocals on the album..homegirl is fucking brutal, there is NO denying that.

Right now my favorite tracks are:
Last Goodbye, Will To Live, Slow Motion, Everything That Could Have Been, and The Change..but the whole album is just amazing, and I can't get over it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are some new pictures up at www.myspace.com/officialkittie

and there's an e-card type thing with a shit load of pictures(including some from the FFY video shoot), wallpapers, icons, videos and more. The location was perfect for the mood of the song and i think you all will enjoy the video.

Today we are also leaving for the FUNERAL FOR YESTERDAY TOUR.
He recently posted on the Kittie Forum..here's the post for those of you that don't go on there.

Man, so many questions and I'll throw my two cents in as much as I can.

Is there going to be a DVD?
Yes. A DVD will be included with the CD, it has some real cool behind the scenes footage of the recording, photo shoots, etc. and we felt we needed to add some value and show some appreciation.
It runs about 45 minutes give or take.

FFY promo video:
That wasn't meant for viewing right now but Kittie feels very strongly about keeping it available and so do we.
I have worked with a lot of artists but Kittie loves their fans more than most do, so they win!
It does look like a cool video now that I see it in that light.
Maybe it will be.

Video symbolism:
Lots of on target comments, it's all about rebirth.

MySpace etc.:
New song snippets coming soon and photos.

Guitars used on the record:
Hamer Vector
Gibson Les Paul Gold Top Reissue
Gibson Les Paul Jimmy Page Model
1953 Fender Telecaster
1960 Danelectro
1980s DiMarzio Hybrid

Guitar solos?
You bet and Tara shreds!

Bass playing:
Trish kills on every song and how she doesn't hate me for what I put her through, I don't know.

Drums:
Mercedes is my favortie drummer of all time, she was amazing to work with. When I sent the record to Kevin to mix it, his first comment was who the Hell is the drummer? This is from a guy who worked on Zeppelin.

Vocals:
Morgan sings her butt off on this record and wait until you hear the heavy stuff.
The record is split in two with FFY being the lighter side. The heavy side is HEAVY.
Morgan worked until she dropped and really went way beyond the limit.

Kittie:
The most talented and hard working band I have ever been around.
The record is crushing and I can't wait until you all hear it.

And if you haven't seen the Promo video, here is the youtube link:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=TaY9Kdj3eB0

Incase you are wondering who Jack Ponti is, he produced the new album.

KITTIE’S RESSURECTION : NEW STUDIO RECORDING AND NEW LABEL

LONDON, ONTARIO - Kittie are currently in Retro Media Sound Studio in Red Bank, New Jersey, recording their fourth full-length release.

Industry veteran producer Jack Ponti, who has worked with Bon Jovi, Doro, Baton Rouge, and Alice Cooper, will produce the record. The album will be released on Kittie’s own label, Kiss of Infamy. Kevin Shirley, who has worked with Jimmy Page as well as Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Dream Theater, will mix the album.

“Starting our own label is an amazing feeling,” said guitarist vocalist Morgan Lander. “We have always been entrepreneurs of sorts, so this path really made sense. I cannot tell you how lucky we are that Jack chose to come out of retirement to do this album with us. He taught us a lot about recording, about how less is always more, about improving sound with different microphone placement, and the importance of focusing on one song at a time. Jack is also a master at arranging vocal harmonies, which is something we have never really experimented with.”

“This album has so many more dimensions than anything we have ever done before,” said Lander. “The harmonies are huge and lush, and the guitars are crushing and complex all at the same time. The bass is smooth and complimentary to the ridiculously fast and precise drums and allows the song to just open up. There is so much more going on now musically rather than two guitars playing the same riffs.”

Some of the song titles for the album are: “Never Again,” “Funeral For Yesterday,” “The Change,” “Breathe,” “Last Goodbye,” “Slow Motion,” and “Flowers of Flesh and Blood.”

“This album is sort of a concept album in a way,” said Lander. “All of the songs were written over a period of about a year and a half and they all revolve around dying, death, and the promise of resurrection. The subject matter is a direct result of what Mercedes and I were going through personally and professionally these past few years - dealing with life on the road, personnel changes, deceit, hopelessness and an overall feeling of "is this the end." Death of one kind or another - be it literally, figuratively, or emotionally - has been at the center of our lives these past few years. But you must have death before you have resurrection and I feel the band is in its resurrection stage - a new hope, a new light and a rebirth.”

Kittie’s yet untitled album will be released March 2007.

here's a newer picture too

Last night i went to the Kittie concert at Orlando.

this is what i wrote in my journal (cause it's friends only)

kittie last night was awesome. although i am sad that katy couldn't come, i had a great time anyway.

there were 3 bands before kittie came on, and i was getting fed up with it, and stephen started having chest pains by the 3rd band.

the first band that was up kicked ass! they were from Orlando, so that makes them awesome. the second band was ok, but the band memebers mom's were standing right next to me, so i talked to them for a while. One of them got thrown down by the mosh pit (like CPo and I did during Battle of the Bands) and i helped her up. I asked if she was ok, and she reponded "I'M SO PHYSCED! I GOT CARDED TODAY AND I'M 50, AND I GOT THROWN DOWN BY A MOSH PIT! I FEEL LIKE A MOSH PIT VIRGIN!" gosh, what an awesome mom.

we were almost close to the band, but there were fat guys and mexicans in front of us. this one girl in front of us OD'd and had to be dragged out by her boyfriend.

i went into the mosh pit during oracle, and got out when they played What I Always Wanted (actually, i think everyone stopped by that time cause everyone loves that song).

Mercedes looked BEAUTIFUL! She sang background vocals, and when she did, she looked like a goddess with her hair blowing behind her from a fan. I respect her more than ever because playing drums is hard enough, but singing as well, it's just amazing.

i had been sick monday, and my throat was sore by the time the concert came around. i lost my voice.

Even though i have more respect for mercedes, i still love morgan!
Morgan: "Let's bust this place up and rip some pussy!"
Guy next to me: "I LOVE PUSSY!"

and before kittie came on, a person with a camera stuck their hand out and took a picture of us. I wonder who that was.

and now i am home alone, throat sore, voice gone, and i couldn't feel more complete.
