The first 50 donors who come and give blood to the Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania on Tuesday get a set of three limited edition Erie lithographs from nationally known artist Kevin-John Jobczynski as the "Season of Giving" continues. Kevin-John Jobczynski will be on hand from 11:30 to 2pm to personalize donors' lithographs and will be available to give interviews.

Donors all week can enter to win a prize pack from Kevin-John Jobczynski that includes an autographed lithograph of the Steelers Super Bowl MVP Heinz Ward.

"A lot of people, particularly Steelers fans are excited about this week's Season of Giving raffle!" Said Dan Desrochers, Director of Public Relations at the blood bank. "We are so grateful for Kevin-John's tremendous support during this difficult time for us."

All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. Community Blood Bank is open from 9a.m. 6p.m. Monday through Friday and until 7:30pm Tuesday night and Saturday 9a.m.-12:30 p.m. Photo ID required.

Presque Isle Downs will hold a job fair Saturday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Ambassador Conference Center in Erie. Apply online and you might be hired by then. The slots machine only casino and thoroughbred race track located at the intersection of I-90 and Route 97 (Exit 27) will be opening in mid February.

The City of Erie received a $82,900 state grant and a $65,000 federal grant to build a skate park in Erie at Bayview Park. That was over 2 years ago. Nothing has been done to actually build it.
City Councilwoman Jessica Horan-Kunco has put together a meeting scheduled for November 1 at 4:30 pm for the Proposed Skatepark.

PA Gaming Control Board Approves 6th Conditional Operator License

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Building on its initial award of five operator licenses in September, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board today unanimously approved the application of Presque Isle Downs Inc. for a sixth gaming operator license under the Race Horse Development and Gaming Act of 2004.

All six approved licenses are associated with horse-racing tracks that are operating or under construction across the Commonwealth. Three of the approved entities have indicated that they expect to begin gaming operations between November 2006 and January 2007.

"Today's license approval continues the momentum we began building a month ago," said Tad Decker, Chairman of the Gaming Control Board. "Pennsylvanians will soon begin to enjoy the benefits envisioned by the Governor and the Legislature when Act 71 became law in 2004: lower property taxes, new jobs and a reinvigorated horse-racing industry."

Under Act 71, the Gaming Control Board is authorized to award 14 slot- machine gaming licenses to facilities across Pennsylvania. Seven Category 1 licenses are authorized for horse-race tracks, though only six of the conditional licenses have been applied for.

The Board plans to act on all permanent licenses for Category 1 facilities before the end of the year along with five Category 2 licenses for standalone slots facilities - two in Philadelphia, one in Pittsburgh and two at tourism- enhanced locations across the state - and one Category 3 license for existing resorts. The recent withdrawal by the Seven Springs Resort has left a second Category 3 license available, and the Board expects to announce a timetable for applying for that license in the future.

In separate votes, the Board today also voted unanimously to approve licenses for Mikohn Gaming Corporation and DigiDeal Corporation to be manufacturers of slot machines and associated equipment in the Commonwealth.

The West Erie County Historical Association will hold a Candlelight Ghost Walk tonight at 8:30 pm in Girard. Ghost walks are offered Saturday evenings at 8:30 pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children, $10 for families. Reservations are required. For more information or to make a reservation, please call 814-774-3653.

Peyton Manning, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Colts flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity, Peyton." said God.

The first 100 blood donors who come to the Erie Community Blood Bank on Monday will receive a buy 1 get 1 free movie pass to plaza Cinemas. On Deck restaurant will be providing food from 11-1pm and is also giving away coupons for buy 10 wings get 10 free.

Anyone looking for an inexpensive home in the Erie area? This one is only $4,000. It's a HUD property. It's located at 350 E 27th St in Erie, around the corner from Might Fine Donuts.

It needs work - the roof is patched but needs replaced soon, the furnace is old and won't last, no appliances, needs a paint job, etc.

If you haven't heard about the event before, here is a quick explaination. Teams of 4 people walk bar to bar, playing a minature golf hole at each bar. It's gets a bit difficult after you've had 6 beers at 6 bars.
The registration fee is $25 per person, $100 per team. You must bring a putter and a couple of golf balls.

If you’ve been wondering why “Du Bist Deutschland” has been the top search on Technorati for the past few days, here’s the breakdown.
It turns out that “Du Bist Deutschland” is the slogan for a recently enacted ad campaign to help combat “grumpiness” among the German people as they are suffering economic woes. The ad campaign employed celebrities ranging from athletes to talk show hosts and raised over 30 Million euros in donations. Problems started when a blogger found a Nazi-era photo showing a banner bearing the same “Du Bist Deutschland” slogan.
An e-mail that “Du Bist Deutschland” founder Jean-Remy von Matt had sent to his colleagues stated that it came from groups “you wouldn’t expect anything else from.” It went on to address the blogosphere, calling blogs “the toilet walls of the Internet,” and as proof for his point, asking the e-mail’s readers to do a search for “Du Bist Deutschland” on Technorati.
The result? Very pissed off blogers and a ton of searches for “Du Bist Deutschland.” A number of satires have popped up, leaving the official site of “Du Bist Deutschland” a mile from the top of Google search results.

Erie’s expertise in education and training was reflected in two Employers of the Year honored this evening by the Economic Development Corporation of Erie County (EDCEC) at its annual dinner meeting.

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) was honored in the non-manufacturing category for its dramatic growth and local economic impact since it opened in 1993 as an osteopathic medical school. It was announced at the dinner that LECOM expects to become the nation’s largest medical school this fall when its total enrollment at Erie and Bradenton, Florida campuses reaches 1,418 – the highest number of students among 20 osteopathic or D.O. medical schools and 100 allopathic or M.D. medical schools.

LECOM has graduated more than 1,000 physicians at its Erie campus on West Grandview Boulevard, now shared by the LECOM School of Pharmacy.

LECOM Board Chair Michael J. Visnosky, Esq., and Donald Tuttle, Pharm.D., Dean of the LECOM School of Pharmacy, accepted the EDCEC award.

Custom Engineering Company earned the manufacturing Employer of the Year award for its success in customizing skilled training programs as well as multi-ton industrial fabrications that are shipped worldwide from the East 33rd & McClelland Street plant.

After suffering through the downturn in the economy that caused it to cut its employment in half, Custom Engineering has rebounded and succeeded, allowing it to increase employment back to historic levels. With this success, they facEd a shortage of skilled workers, so they designed and tested the curriculum for an intensive, four-week welding program that has served as a model for other programs. Company owner Thomas B. Hagen accepted the award.

Forty-one Erie area employers were recognized as Honor Roll companies for re-investment in Erie County, as demonstrated by increased job opportunities. Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott presented certificates to: Advanced Pressure Technologies, LLC; American Tinning & Galvanizing Company; C.A. Certificates to companies in the “community-based” category were given out by Erie County General Authority Chairman Robert Spaulding to: Erie Homes for Children & Adults, Inc; Hermitage House Youth Services, Inc.; Our Lady of Peace School; and Saint Vincent Health Center.

These “Honor Roll” companies utilized one or more of the various programs offered through the economic development system during 2005 in order to assist in their community investments. In total, 59 loans were made to 35 companies, totaling $20.0 million. Private investment of $79.5 million matched this, resulting in a total investment by these companies of $99.5 million. This investment will produce an additional 700 jobs in Erie County over the next three years.

EDCEC President Monica Brower gave a progress report for 2005, noting these highlights of EDCEC and its related entities:

o The sale of the Uniflow Center at 1525 East Lake Road to Erie Management Group (EMG) to house its company start-ups until they’re ready for permanent facilities;
o Acquisition of the former International Paper site, which will allow EMG to locate its new companies there as well as to provide additional industrial acreage in the City of Erie for other companies;
o The acquisition of the former Kaiser aluminum site on East 12th Street, which will be home to IFP North America’s new $65 million fruit processing and juice packaging plant;
o The approval of 16 loans totaling $11.8 million for local business expansion, retention, and attraction projects. These loans leveraged an additional $71.3 million in private investment in plant, building, and equipment;
o The attraction by EDCEC of $5.65 million in committed grant funds for environmental and infrastructure work on projects such as the IP and Kaiser sites;
o The dedication of the City of Erie’s newest industrial park, the Joyce A. Savocchio Business Park, that will help provide 250 jobs to this inner-city neighborhood, and the announcement that Paragon Print Systems will construct a new facility there;
o The sale of two lots in the Fairview Business Park to allow two local companies, Connex, Inc. and Formtech, to expand their operations.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to put this out for anyone who might be interested.

I bought a gift card to Bob's Gun Shop in McKane for my dad for christmas, but because of his illness he is not able to use it. I tried to explain the situation to the owner and get my money back, but he wouldn't give it to me, so now i'm selling that gift card for 40 dollars to anyone who might be interested.
