New Website for Physics Students

Hello!

I'm a first year graduate student in astrophysics. I recently created a website aimed at physics students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies and careers in physics. My hope is that this website will assist physics students in pursuing their desired educational and career paths.

Within the website is a guide on how to apply to graduate school, the largest list of physics internships, scholarships, fellowships, and summer research opportunities out there (as far as I'm aware), interviews with current female physics graduate students and female physicists working in their careers, and more.

The website is only a little over a week old, so it's still very small. I need help figuring what I should add, change, expand, and improve. Is my graduate school guide clear and accurate? What would best help physics students learn about opportunities available to them? How can my little website best benefit you? Do you have any experiences you'd like to share?

The link is: Astromiror

Thank you all so much!
Laura

Greetings

Hi, I am a graduate student in high energy physics (particle physics). I am close to getting my Ph.D. I noticed someone asking about particle physics books. If you are an experimentalist, you must own Introduction to Experimental Particle Physics by Richard Fernow. It is the only book I have seen that adresses detector components and a little accelerator physics. For particle theory, Introduction to Elementary Particles by David Griffiths is good. For a higher level text, go with Quarks and Leptons by Halzen and Martin. Back to shifts for me...

Hey I just joined. My name is Kira and I'm a freshman in high school, but astrophysics is what I love and If there's something you're excited about I'm glad to listen. I like to know and understand everything I can with the small education I have.

gracias ~Kira

Hello!

This group is a bit dead, but I thought I'd join and introduce myself anyway.

My name is Laura, and I'm a first year graduate student in Astrophysics. I currently research gamma-ray bursts for NASA. I am originally from near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, lived in Florida to obtain my bachelors degree, and am currently residing in Huntsville, Alabama.

I have two blogs, this one being my personal one, and my professional blog detailing my research at http://astromiror.greatestjournal.com/.

Maybe my post will encourage others to speak up and we can resurrect this community. I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi! I'll be a sophomore in college this fall. Am working to get my BS degree in astronomy and astrophysics. A friend once told me to combine hobbies (i.e. LJ) with the things I love (i.e. physics), so here I am to be part of the community. :D

Hi!

Just wanted to share these two pics with y'all! I took them yesterday, when I was baking an apple pie.

When I was making apple pie, the apple parings (?) fell in the shape of an integral sign.

The apple pie I made yesterday. There's also a version with coloured letters, since the letters aren't that clear on this one. My previous apple pie had a huge p on it and was called the Apple Pi (or simply the Pi). :P

The looks on the faces of my relatives, when they saw the pie, were really funny. :P

~Mara

So I was wondering, is it just me or are most of the blokes doing physics fairly clueless about chicks until they hit 25?

This guy I've been seeing is a physicist, 1st yr PHD whch puts him at 22, and I've come to realise that what he knows about women is rather limited. Yet if I go to the music faculty of some of the engineering classes, the guys tend to in general know a lot more.

I'm just curious, is it just me who has noticed this or am I hanging out with the wrong guys?

Hey,
I am a freshman astrophysics major at UC Santa Cruz. I just stumbled upon this community, and I thought I might as well join it.
All you girls looking to get into astrophysics, look at UCSC's program. UCSC has one of the best programs for astrophysics, which is awsome. We also have the center for adaptive optics on campus which basically makes different insturments to improve telescopes. We run the UCO Lick observatory as well as have partnership in the Keck twin telescopes. Its pretty awsome here. Just letting all of you know.
BTW. Freshman physics, awsome class. 4 quarters long, taught by some amazing people (Joel Primack taught the first class (kinimatics and dynamics), he also had alot to do with cold dark matter theroy).

Yeah, sorry for the shamless plug on UCSC, but it really is an awsome school, expecially for astrophysics.

Have fun, and always remember that e^ipi +1= 0, it comes in handy, actually it dosnt, but it is kinda awsome. (e^itheta= cos(theta)+isin(theta) comes in handy in waves though....).

Jen

I've decided that I really do not like operators, especially when its all in hilbert space.

What is even more detestable is when lecturers change text book from a great reference book to a book that is fantastic as a teaching book but can only be gotten from america which takes 6 weeks.

In 6 weeks semester will be half over and the poor people here in melbourne will be trying to juggle labs and other study for scary stuff and not have time to sit and look over books that should have been here earlier!!!!!!!

Other then this, physics departments are great places to meet people. It also helps when these people are interested in being more then your friend.

So I've been doing some research lately and have discoveredthat I'm a bit rusty on the whole differential equation thing and converting maths in general. So I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on radius of curvature in 3d space?

Other then that its time for another year to start soon of quantum, astrophysics, optics electrodynamics and other atomic and molecular things. Why did I choose the path of the mad scientist who is doomed to be lonely for ever.

Why not arts. everyone needs an english major in the family... scrap that thought thats what mum is for.

Physics all the way!!!!

Hello,
I just rediscovered LJ so I thought I'd join some good groups...well here I am :) My name is Katarina and I'm 20 years old, doing my 3rd year of engineering physics at university. One of my biggest interests since I was a kid and started reading children's books on astronomy, I've been stuck, hehe :) I'm glad to see that there are some fellow girls here who also like physics, because there really aren't that many girls in my class. lol.

Oh, and if anyone want a new postal penpal from Sweden by the way, please feel free to post a comment. :-) And please dont let my boring diary fool you, hehe. :)
Huggies, Kattis

So this is my little creation and I haven't typed in it in a while :) oops, been too busy I guess. So, it sounds like a lot of you right now are all in high school. I'm currently a freshman at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana (fondly known as Chambana) obviously majoring in Physics. Anyone who live in IL, U of I is an awesome place to come for physics/engineering. In physics U of I is 4th in the country, topped by those prestigous private schools that coust $40,000 a year. I'm taking E&M, Calc II, Astronomy and Chemistry this semester (math is everywhere mwaaa haa haa) I'm also required to take a 0 credit course called Careers in Physics. Each week we get to hear something new. Last week we heard from Physics Society and Physics Van, an outreach group and this week we get to hear about Undergraduate research oppritunities. The class is required of all freshman physics majors and, yes, I counted, 12 girls in a group of just over 100. Yes ladies, our numbers are small, HOWEVER we are still amazing AND we can become amazing physicists. My Professor for E&M is Naomi Matkins who does research in nuclear physics and she is an AWESOME professor. I love her.

Some hints for you high school hopefuls:
Keep your grades up, just because a school is lacking in females doesn't mean they'll except you if your skills seem to be lacking. EVERYTHING STILL COUNTS
On the other hand, being a woman in physics is a good topic for your essay
Try and get everything you can out of your physics courses now
It never gets easier
remember, one day, we WILL rule the world.

Hi!

Hello! I'm a junior in high school and I took physics in my freshman year and fell head over heels in love. Astrophysics especially interests me, and I am planning on majoring in it in college, although where is still illusive =). String theory is a hobby of mine, and I'm fully planning on taking AP physics when I'm a senior! Well, I think thats about it =) lovely to meet you all!

Hello Hello!

Hello!

I'm Liz, and I just finished my Junior year of High School. I took Physics 110 this year (the accelerated intro to physics course), and fell in love with it. Since I also love Chemistry, I am thinking of majoring in Material Sciences and Engineering in college. Is anyone else majoring in this? I am a sailor, and until this year, I had no idea how my sails worked. Some sort of magic, I had always assumed. Now that I've taken physics, I fully understand how and why I go forward when the sail is trimmed correctly.

Hello,

I'm pretty new to livejournal, but not so new to physics. I graduated last year with a BS in Engineering Physics, but am now totally underemployed in lame-o drafting. But hopefully I will be moving into Electrical Engineering soon, and I can get more into the physics side of that.
Just saying hello!

By the way - seems like lots of people are interested in Astrophysics. I took one semester of it and found it totally boring!! The math was all plug n chug. Maybe I just didn't get far enough into it... I dunno. Still want to be an astronaut though.

Hey!

Helo!

New person here. I'm not taking physics till next year as a junior, which is earliest my school allows us to take it. Stupid School. I can't wait though; I plan on going into Astrophysics for college. I'm taking courses over the summer on Engineering and "The Elegant Universe", so I hope that qualifies me to join! This seems like a great group!
:-D
Linz

Hey chickies,
I'm not into physics (ok, I'll admit a friends bf and I are planning on strapping modified leaf blowers to our backs and wheels to our feet, and yes, it was all my idea, but that's not exactly the point.)
However I am into the sciences, espically psych and human biology, and like you guys, I don't fit the sterotype. I hope you guys will accept me?

I'm an aussie chick currently doing year 11, I enjoy reading, writting, photography, ceramics, hanging out with friends, comtempory dance and I'm thinking of taking up a night class to learn how to weild and play guitar.
I work at Spotlight in it's furnishings department, so I can tell you alot about fabric, blinds and curtains. An awful lot. I'm also very much into music, and my tastes range from nu metal, indie to rock and alternative. My fav bands are The Rasmus, Grinspoon and Evanesence in that order. Yes, I'm so gawth, watch me out gawth you all. Also quite fond of soundtracks, SuperJesus, Vanessa Carlton, The Corrs, Enya and Avril.

I also moderate a community for astromeny, a love of mine. ^^ Just got it started and trying to get it decent.

~Christine.

Good books for Undergrad...

Ya seeeeeeee... my EM lecturer is pure pants.

I never thought it was possible, but this dude has sucked the fun right out of physics for me. :(

So... I need books.

I've looked at a Duffin book, and it's just too obscure. I need something really to the point, and well set out, and suitable for an undergraduate.

Will be getting out the Feynman Lectures (because he's a duuuuuuuuuude) in the hope that I'll have a more conceptual understanding, but anybody know any others?

I also need a good book on Fourier - again crazy lecturer. :(

BAH mathematical methods... I'll tell you what was in there if I knew. :S

What else... Errrr...

Quantum and applications (perturbation theory etc etc). :| MEH...

Optics is fine WOOOO... Something I get! Stat Phys should be OK, as should thermo...

Lalalala... Electrons in solids bahahahah... WHY ARE PEOPLE SO CRAP?! Or maybe I'm just dumb, WHO KNOWS...

Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Cheers my dears!
