Sticky: Book Discussion Post.
Hope you're all enjoying Euro 2008 or the World Cup qualifiers going on in other parts of the world. On to the news.

+ The no confidence vote against the board will be held on July 6 in Camp Nou. A 2/3 vote against the board will trigger an election. Potential candidates include current vice president Soriano and former vice president Sandro Rosell [formerly Laporta's best friend, now his worst enemy].

+ The official website profiles Tito Vilanova, our new assistant manager, who will be familiar to the likes of Messi and Pique.

+ Rijkaard looks back. [Oh, Frank.]

+ Our top women's team [I bet some of you guys didn't know we had 1, let alone 4 - I didn't until about 2 years ago] were promoted back to the Spanish Superliga with a 7-1 [!!!] victory over FVPR El Olivo.

cantera-related newsCollapse )

(One of our new boys, Seydou Keita, has scored 4 goals in his last two games for Mali. Nice.)

Finally, Guardiola got back in town today from his supershort vacation, so look for a flurry of official presentations soon, starting with the unveiling of the new kit on the 25th.

And of course some more transfer announcements, possibly within the next week.

more sadness

Frank Rijkaard was unable to take his last pre-match press conference as Barca manager as he was overcome with emotion. He left the newsroom after being presented with the above t-shirt.

It reads 'never smoke alone', in reference to this banner, often seen at the Camp Nou this season, including at the Mallorca game:

(Sometimes, our home fans don't suck so hard.)

In other news of sadness, it is all but confirmed that Deco and Samuel Eto'o will both be leaving the club. I'm personally opposed to both of them leaving, but Deco's departure in particular looks set in stone.

El Mundo Deportivo carries an open letter from Deco to the fans regarding his decision.

Joan Laporta has confirmed that Frank Rijkaard will leave the Club at the end of the 2007-08 season. Current Barça B coach, Josep Guardiola, will take over the reins of the first team. Joan Laporta spoke to reporters after a Board meeting on Thursday afternoon. (source)

Bye Frankie, it's been good. We'll never forget what you did for Barça.

For those that may not know Pep has only been with Barça B for one season and has not coached prior. So, yeah certainly a risk.

CL news, and a Rijkaard interview

So we're through to the semi-finals. It's not going to be easy against Manchester United, but hopefully we'll at least have Messi back by then. Deco might be too much to hope for, though.

(Captain Caveman is unfortunately suspended for the first leg, played at home.)

On the topic of players like Deco, there was an interesting interview a week ago with Rijkaard in the Financial Times with the wonderful Simon Kuper. Definitely recommended if you want to know his thoughts on many of his players. I thought what he said about Iniesta, Messi and Eto'o in particular was great.
