Welcome to _dragonball_, the community for fans of Dragonball and Dragonball Z. Created in 1984 by Akira Toriyama, the manga was translated in 1984 to the anime format, spanning 508 episodes and a slew of movies. It was based on the popular Chinese legend 'Journey to the West', about a Monk named Xuanzang and his companions. Sent by the Bodhitsattva Guan Yin to retrieve Sutras not found in China, he is accompanied by three disciples. The Monkey King Son Wukong, the perverse demon-pig Zhu Wuneg, and the half-water demon Sha Wujing. The legend of the Monkey King has been touched on before in other anime; the manga and anime by Kazuya Minekura called Gensomaden Saiyuki. (Saiyuki is the Japanese rendition of the Pinyin Chinese name, Xī Yóu Jì.)
In Toriyama's version of the tale, however, Xuanzang is no monk, nor is he a he, and Son Wukong is one of the sole survivors of an alien race (and save for a tail and rather large ears, he no longer bears any simian semblance). Toriyama scrapped the search for the Sutras as well, instead introducing 7 magical spheres said to summon a Dragon to grant one wish to the gatherer.
This is where we meet two of one of the hundreds (if not thousands) of characters that span three series. (because we suppose we've gotta involve Dragonball GT as well, sorta like that Uncle you gotta invite to Thanksgiving dinner.) Buruma Briefs, genius, inventor, adventurer. Deciding to take it upon herself to collect the Dragonballs, her search leads her to a lonely little cabin in the woods. Enter Son Gokou. His name still holds true to the Chinese variation, 'Born of the Sky'. He's not exactly bright. Actually he's damned near backwards, given that he has no clue of the difference between boys and girls (amongst other things). He's lived alone with his adoptive father Gohan, who only recently passed away. Grandpa Gohan's most treasured posession was a small orange sphere, the 4-Star Dragonball. Thus, the madness ensued.
Countless adventures, multiple deaths, drawn-out battle-sequences, super-powerful badguys, and several planet-eradicating explosions later, Dragonball Z ended in 1996 with a titanic battle between the Gokou-tachi and what appeared to be a renegade (albeit ultra-powerful) wad of chewing gum. But, those pencil-pushers weren't about to shelve one of their most popular series. Even though Toriyama finished both the manga and the anime, the folks at the production company asked for another season. Wanting to move on to other works, Toriyama instead handed over creative control to the company. Bad idea. Dragonball GT, the 'GT' standing for Grand Tour, was a huge flop. Fans of the series didn't quite understand just what was going on here. Things had ended so neatly in Z. Now Gokou's a little kid again and ... the Dragonballs are bad? HUH?
But enough of that. You're not here for a history lesson. This is a community for fans of the show and manga. One hitch, though. This is for fans of the Japanese format. Where there are no 'Saiyans', there are Saiyajin. Where Gokou, Gohan, and Goten are all voiced by the same WOMAN. Where Muten Roshi drinks beer and has a crush on an aerobics instructor on TV. Where people die, not get shuttled off to some mysterious next dimension. Where Videl's father is the ex-wrestler known as Mr. Satan. Oh yeah, and where they bleed and swear, and get naked on occassion. We're not talking the Toonami version, or even the supposed 'uncut' version airing now. No no no. We're talking the viable and well-loved series shown in Japan. Not the version of the show that makes 'respectable' anime fans roll their eyes and dismiss us as dub-loving trendy nitwits.
Anyway, this is a general fandom community. Pictures, fanart, fanfics, discussions, icons, whatever-your-fancy. And yes, considering we're not going on the licensed version, fansubs/dubs, AND bootlegs are allowed to be traded here. But, just to cover my ass, make sure you get rid of your illegal copies after 24 hours, right? We don't need Gen Fukunaga banging down our doors complaining about how much money he's loosing because his translation of the series sucks lots of ass. *cough*
Oh yes. And another thing. Any mentioning of 'Dragonball AF' aside from it being a hugely fantastic April Fool's joke will get you beaten severely with Niyobo.
