Incase you didn't hear the news, Jack Kevorkian was let out of prison today after serving 8 years of his 10-25 year sentence. He got out early on good behavior, obviously.

Was completely ignorant of this man and his actions. After a look at this, I agree with you. I find it shocking that anyone could be locked up for using such compassion.

I used to be on the fence about Kevorkian until I saw my husband's grandmother die slowly from terminal cancer. It was debilitating and very painful. We all pretty much knew that she would never have wanted to live that way. I certainly would have wanted to be put out of my misery. I told my husband that, if anything like that happened to me, to leave the bottle of pain meds, some paper, and a pen by the side of my bed. I didn't want to live my final days bedridden, mindless, and having someone else change my diapers...

Anyhow, since that time, I've had more respect for the guy and for what he stands for..

Actually, he didn't get out on good behavior, he got out for failing health. Doctors give him less than a year; he has Hepatitis C.

I find this to be highly ironic. Here we have Christianity, a religion that is obsessed with the afterlife, which you can only get to by dying. You would think, then, that Christians would support assisted suicide, suicide, right-to-die sort of things, because that gets them closer to their gawd and out of this miserable world. That's the whole point, right? Well, then please excuse me when I find it very hypocritical when a Christian organization says it's against assisted suicide. Does it mean they're against Christianity too?

i personally dont oppose assisted death whaetever if sumunz reely a goner and in pain..but to pretend you dont understand why christians oppose this is just dumb.the bible says tou shalt not kill and to respect life..with some exceptions like murderers and homosexuals..you know really bad people..so dont pretend you dont get it its not that dumb..but that doesnt mean their right either.

I suppose this would appear incongruous to the modern neopagan who doesn't know anything about Christianity. Personally, I blame the evangelical notion of "once saved, always saved." It's radically distorted the traditional understanding of salvation.

We Catholics do not kill ourselves to hasten our arrival to the Heavenly Kingdom because we do not take it for granted that we deserve heaven, nor do we believe that it doesn't matter whether we deserve it or not. We don't profess to no which danger we're running, but we do know which loyalty and which commandment we would be violating. I think a man is fitter for heaven if he endures like a man; a hero can be a martyr to cancer just as St. Lawrence was a martyr to the cauldron and St. Agnes was a martyr to the sword.

The faith in a future life, the hope of a future happiness, the belief that God is Love and that loyalty is eternal life - these things don't produce lunacy or mass suicide if they are taken along with the other Christian doctrines of duty, vigilance, and watchfulness against the powers of hell.

Roman Catholic standpoint is that suicide goes against self-preservation; instead of trying to be productive and do good, the person is prematurely ending his life; can indirectly harm others; and takes away God's right to dominion over the person.

Positive and direct suicide perpetrated without God's consent always constitutes a grave injustice towards Him. To destroy a thing is to dispose of it as an absolute master and to act as one having full and independent dominion over it; but man does not possess this full and independent dominion over his life, since to be an owner one must be superior to his property. God has reserved to himself direct dominion over life; He is the owner of its substance and He has given man only the serviceable dominion, the right of use, with the charge of protecting and preserving the substance, that is, life itself. Consequently suicide is an attempt against the dominion and right of ownership of the Creator. To this injustice is added a serious offence against the charity which man owes to himself, since by his act he deprives himself of the greatest good in his possession and the possibility of attaining his final end. Moreover, the sin may be aggravated by circumstances, such as failure in conjugal, paternal, or filial piety, failure in justice or charity, if by taking his life one eludes existing obligations of justice or acts of charity, which he could and should perform. That suicide is unlawful is the teaching of Holy Scripture and of the Church, which condemns the act as a most atrocious crime and, in hatred of the sin and to arouse the horror of its children, denies the suicide Christian burial. Moreover, suicide is directly opposed to the most powerful and invincible tendency of every creature and especially of man, the preservation of life. Finally, for a sane man deliberately to take his own life, he must, as a general rule, first have annihilated in himself all that he possessed of spiritual life, since suicide is in absolute contradiction to everything that the Christian religion teaches us as to the end and object of life and, except in cases of insanity, is usually the natural termination of a life of disorder, weakness, and cowardice.

This is a good day for Jack, but not for Michigan. The ignorant yokels in this great state of Michigan voted for a constitutional amendment banning doctor assisted suicide almost a decade ago, which was the reason that Kevorkian was locked up in the first place. I'm sure the idiots in this state would also vote to ban abortion and reinstate the death penalty, if given a chance.

Although, i'm an atheist, i will post in a way more akin to the subject matter. (damn i love Firefox's spell check crap.) anyway. Though the bible does outline SEVERAL and in my opinion insane reasons to justify murder, it is held by dark age mystics/clerics/priest (or what ever you personally want to call them) that committing suicide in any form would send you to "hell."

I don't recall the bible mentioning anything about suicide.
