Final Announcement (from both mods)
This is a final moderator announcement for those seeking a resolution to the current "crisis".

For those calling for "action" (you know who you are): you can keep flinging poorly-reasoned, unexperienced, insulting nonsense at Oblyvia and I if you want. While I find it hilariously entertaining (i do SO love pointless drama) It's not going to change anything, because guess what: we're the mods now. No, seriously, think about that for a second. We. Are. The. Mods.

I would rather there were no mods, but here we are. Deal with it. If anyone here thinks this is going to be a god damned democracy anymore, think again. No comment you make to myself or Oblyv can override our collective common sense. An exposition of said common-sense is as follows:

There are very, very good reasons to do absolutely nothing as a moderator, reasons many of you seem to be utterly incapable of imagining. As soon as you ban one person, or delete one post without permission, you've set a serious precedent. It enrages trolls, encourages the creation of endless sock-puppet accounts, and generally makes more trouble for everyone than it's worth.

It's over. No more polls, no bannings, no more faux-democratic nonsense. The community will continue to be an anarchistic forum to discuss relatively mundane issues with almost no relevant experience or education in those issues. That's what this place has always been about, and so help me god, that's what it will continue to do. We have a long, proud history of flinging uninformed rhetorical BS back and forth at each other with no resolution in sight, and that tradition stays.

Thank you. I was weak for a moment. Forgive me by posting nudie pictures. Yay anarchy!

So... we're gonna continue to have this be an anarchist, unmodded community, by the mods deleting posts that dissent against their preferred positions.

What a pile.

Oblyvia's post with the big poll on it. It's gone now.

Oh yeah, we deleted that. Note that I said deleting someone's post "without permission" wouldn't happen. It's her post, she's allowed to do what she wants with it.

You're perfectly free to post your own poll, which I'm sure will generate the same kind of fascinating, enlightening discourse that we've seen over the past few days.

Given that the vote on that poll was a slight majority in favour of "doing nothing", your characterization of it as a "dissenting" post is also a little dishonest.

Deleting a post that's already had a bunch of discussion in it is chickenshit. It's akin to deleting a thread where you got owned.

Haha, you can't delete and then "undelete". Once its gone, its gone. One poll is still there, another is gone, because its no longer of use. [info]epictetus_rex and I chatted, and this post was the result. End of story. Big Brother has spoken. Now love me. LOVE ME!

haha, delete undelete... classic. listen, you have to realize now that everyone talking to you is either going to be your dire enemy because you're 'The Man'(ironic, eh? but now you're a man), while others are going to be trying to be your flunky because you're now the super-cool mod. just remember to make sure and let it all go to your head REAL QUICK, and use it as a status symbol. otherwise, you'll never break the seventy new e-mails mark from comments to your personal journal.

Absolutely. However, as far as I've read, no dissenter has given a single reason for me or anyone else to believe that my italicized paragraph above isn't true. They've all been very vocal about how great it would be if we banned trolls and deleted posts with no LJI-cuts. None has seriously considered the potential repercussions.

I've seen moderation destroy quite a few communities and make (online) life hell for moderators. Check out [info]feminist for an example of just such a troll-ridden paranoid police state.

I never said anything about deleting posts. I argued for putting long posts, video posts, and graphic heavy posts behind LJ cuts. The mod could go in and alter any posts that violate that rule without actually deleting them.

If that enrages a troll, you simply ban their IP address. This will at least slow them down, as it is more difficult to switch IP address than it is to create sock puppet accounts. Although I was recently informed that it can be relatively easy to change IPs depending on what type of connection is being used.

Right-o about the IP thing, especially if someone has access to a school or a cafe. The LJ-cuts thing is interesting, because moderators can't actually edit posts, they can only delete them. I can threaten all I want, but the only action I can take is deletion, and then we're right back to the main problem.

I didn't realize that. I thought mods had a bit more control. Well I guess my stance must shift a bit then. Carry on as you were before, I am no longer dissenting.

I actually didn't either, until yesterday. I was trying to reply to a post in another of my comms, and hit edit by mistake. It took me to the post, but the content was frozen.

Yay for anarchy, Kai claims to have a viable answer, that DOESN'T REQUIRE BANNINGS, OR DELETIONS, so why not just try that route if it's still a huge unending issue for you

good show.

like i said in the disappearing poll thingie: i can't support an effort to modify or ban or enforce some kind of silly rule about LJ cuts around here. if you guys went ahead and did ban someone, i probably wouldn't care either. but i think it's funny how few people understand the basic tenant of human nature at work here:

give them an inch, and they'll take a mile. or they'll open the flood gates. or they'll eat all your leftovers. or something to that effect.

I've got work, finals, and the holidays to think about. Someone trolling in a debate community is not going to make me slice my wrists- so all of you who are bitching and moaning can... uhhh get a lyph? Scroll past, discuss the issues that interest you... IT'S NOT THAT HARD.

(Um... I just joined, so this far I've got nothing to rage about. :) Just thought to point out that quite a few of the community's interests are misspelled on the profile page. Maybe more people would find the community through interest search if the (presumed) typos were corrected.)
