| News: Being a new dad and ... reconciling? |
[14 Jul 2009|08:35am] |
indieWIRE had a mid-year report a bout box office success. Mentioned as part of the report was Rudo y Cursi:Even “Rudo y Cursi” and “Cheri” - which debuted in 70 and 76 screens, respectively - have been relative disappointments. Gael Garcia Bernal-Diego Luna reunion “Rudo”‘s $1.8 million gross is a far cry from “Y Tu Mama Tambien,” while Michelle Pfieffer’s comeback attempt “Cheri” is struggling in expansion. It also seems like those quotes about Diego and his personal life keep on coming!
This time, the quote, Ella está feliz y enamoradísima (Camila Sodi). Él está feliz y enamoradísimo (Diego Luna); es lo único que yo sé. Ustedes deberían preguntarle a ellos popped up again in an article about Thalía, one of Camila’s aunts. A very rough translation of the quote is that Camila and Diego are happy together and you should ask them about everything.
And while chatting about Diego, it should be mentioned he likes being one of those early rising dads!I love waking up with him. It's the most beautiful thing ever. The morning was never so good. I used to hate mornings... I used to wear sunglasses. I started to function after 11 or 12.
Now, at 5am, I'm playing with my kid and changing diapers. You become a different man. The brief article also goes on to mention that he fell even more deeply in love with Camila after he saw what she went through in the delivery room!
Wooden Spears had a photo of Gael after he’d been swimming and Rudo by Cursi was also mentioned in the article, stating Gael had reconciled with Diego.
With reconciliation usually used when there’s been some kind of argument or something to divide the pair, did they really need to ‘reconcile’, especially as they’ve working together through Canana Films and are in contact with each other? An odd choice of words.

| News: Blu-Ray and passing mentions. |
[07 Jul 2009|01:24am] |
There’s not much mention of Diego this week; just a couple passing mentions.
The magazine, Films & Festivals, has a Latin American cinema issue, which includes interviews with Diego and Gael, amongst others.
Over at the UK’s Guardian, there was a blog post about box office results (blog post dated June 30). Rudo y Cursi was mentioned, with Diego and Gael listed as the stars of the film.Sunshine Cleaning's screen average was marginally ahead of the result achieved by Rudo y Cursi: £1,139, with just shy of £40,000 from 35 locations. The number compares unfavorably with the last team-up of actors Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna and writer Carlos Cuarón: Y Tu Mamá También debuted seven years ago with £182,000 from 38 screens. Transformers sequel digs in at the UK box office CNN had an article called: ‘Rudo y Cursi’: The Mexican movie phenomenon. From the article: "Originally I wanted to make a fake documentary about a footballer from a humble background who made it big and then disappeared mysteriously," Carlos Cuaron told CNN. "But I told this idea to Gael [Garcia Bernal] and Diego [Luna], and they both said they wanted to play the part. I had one part and two actors. So I made up another brother and forgot about the fake documentary." Last but certainly not least: Rudo y Cursi, according to the HD Room, is coming to Blu-Ray. It’s available for pre-order from Amazon, due to come to Blu-Ray August 25 2009.

| News: EIFF, LAFF & 5 favourite movies (& why it's unfair to choose only 5!) |
[30 Jun 2009|01:02am] |
Offering condolences to the Jackson family on the loss of Michael, Diego’s movie, Mister Lonely, has been cited by many different, both official and otherwise, news sites and various blogs, as a tribute movie in honour of Michael after his passing over the weekend.
In the UK, Diego’s been busy! (A lot of the following news will have mentions of Gael, as well, as they ‘do the rounds’ with the UK press for Rudo y Cursi.)
The Insider has some photos of Diego and Gael at the EIFF (Edinburgh International Film Festival). The source for the photos is accidentalsexiness.com - would you agree with the name of the site: are Diego and Gael ‘accidentally sexy’?
The Herald, in Ireland, has an interview with Gael and Diego. There’s mention of the birth of their sons, how their friendship must’ve made it easy to play bickering brothers and how has fatherhood affected them. From the interview: PAUL BYRNE: Friends since childhood, so playing brothers -- even bickering ones -- must have been easy. GAEL GARCIA BERNAL: Yeah . . . DIEGO LUNA: It was kind of easy, and when we had trouble, we just looked at Alfonso and Carlos. They're like Rudo and Cursi -- they're perfect for this. A perfect example. They're always fighting. GGB: Whenever we didn't get the sibling rivalry, we were always thinking: "What would Alfonso and Carlos do in this situation?" And still in Ireland, there was also an article about the duo by Fiona McCain in The Irish Times where they speak about Canana Films, their production company that they set up with Pablo Cruz. From the article:There is a childlike element to their teasing that makes it difficult to sustain any sober line of questioning. I am reminded of the fact that several female friends were sent into swoons of envy when I mentioned that this interview was taking place.
“And now you’re going to go back and say ‘nah, they’re not that great’,” says García Bernal when I tell him. Luna slumps with faux-dejection into the sofa at the thought. “Please don’t go back and say the truth,” he pleads. “Keep the mystery.” ITN has a video speaking about Rudo y Cursi; the duo feature briefly during its 2minutes & 19 seconds.
The Mirror also features a brief article! From the article: Diego, who plays a professional footballer, joked: "I am a better player than what you get to see in the film."
Gael continued the joke, saying: "I had to act a lot also, like I had to pretend that I failed and at the end of the day I mean, it's all about acting. And they appeared, also, in The Metro! There was a brief article where Gael laughed off the suggestion he and Diego tried to synchronise the birth of their sons and Diego hit back by saying Gael had needed his go ahead!
In this article, hearts have also been shattered!Diego has shattered the hearts of women out there by declaring to Metro that the pair will never kiss again on screen. Over to the BBC now!
On the BBC’s site, there’s an article about Rudo y Cursi, including something from the boys and what they’ve been doing recently, work wise, and iPOP at indieWIRE has a photo of Diego and Gael, with Carlos, clapping for some Scottish drummers that serenaded their arrival at the UK premiere of the film (photo from June 22 2009).
An article entitled Spreading the love at the EIFF, in the Edinburgh Guide, is about the EIFF and includes a mention of Diego and Gael. From the article: This is the fault of the party that was thrown last night for Rudi Y Cursi, Carlos Cuaron's Mexican tale starring the dimunitive, but hot property, double-bill that is Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna. And remember that above quote from The Mirror where they joked they had to fail at football? The Press Association has an article that includes the quote. There was also another article from the Press Association about how there was no role rift between the two stars. It speaks about whether they would’ve fought for the role and how clear Carlos was in who he thought he should who in the title roles.
There was also a mention on Teletext about their newfound skills: "I find soccer to be a wonderful therapy. It makes me a happier person." Now, to LAFF (Los Angeles Film Festival).
Ambulante was mentioned by indieWIRE and apparently, Diego was in LA the previous Wednesday (from the day the article was written which was June 26 2009). “There are a lot of films today that use the language of documentary,” said Luna, who founded Ambulante along with fellow actor, business partner and friend Gael Garcia Bernal. “The films that I think that stick with people are the ones that relate to the personal.” The boys were also mentioned in an interview by Carlos Cuaron with Rotten Tomatoes. From the article:Are Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna any good at football in real life? Carlos Cuaron: I cannot say they are the worst players... but they are not as good as Rudo and Cursi! We all play in the same Saturday league, although they don't play that often because they're always working or touring. They used to play in a team that I founded 23 years ago. We just have fun.
How much of the salty banter between Gael and Diego is ab-libbed? CC: It's all scripted. There's very little improv, because we didn't need it. Maybe only two or three bits. I was looking for naturalness and the dynamic these two guys have together is just amazing. While over at Rotten Tomatoes, Diego was asked to name his top five favourite movies. Diego bristled: "It's really unfair to have to say only five films," he complains as he picks his final choice. "This barely covers my life; I'm up to about the age of 16 by the end of the list!"

| News: LAFF, Edinburgh and saying no to tell-all interviews! |
[22 Jun 2009|05:47pm] |
Remember Diego’s marriage was being discussed by two of Camila’s aunts in the media? Guess what? They’re back! (Well, one of them is!)
According to Aztec Espectáculos, The Spark Post, People (the Spanish version; be careful, there could be a pop-up if following this link) as well as this being mentioned in Hissip’s weekly Latino Celebrity Roundup, Camila’s aunt Thalía has only had one thing to say:
Ella está feliz y enamoradísima. Él está feliz y enamoradísimo, es lo único que yo sé. Basically? They’re both happy and in love.
And according to Latin Gossip, Camila wanted to say yes to a sit-down interview where they discuss their lives but Diego said no.
In an BBC interview with Hannah McGill, director of the Edinburgh film festival, she mentions that Diego and Gael going to Edinburgh is a highlight of the festival – and that she’s thrilled to have them come over (alongside director Carlos Cuaron) because they’re two of her favourite actors! (For some photos from Edinburgh, check the BBC’s photo gallery.)
Speaking of Edinburgh, there was a photo at (Italian) Yahoo! of Gael and Diego arriving at Cineworld Edinburgh with Carlos for the premiere of Rudo y Cursi.
Over at Wooden Spears, there were a couple photos of Gael attending the line-up announcement for the LAFF (Los Angeles Film Festival). Diego’s in one of them but you don’t really see his face.
Speaking of LAFF, there was a mention of Diego and Gael in the LA Times. Apparently, they’re doing talks.Other non-feature events include various poolside chats at the W, “Festival Conversations” with the likes of Robert Rodriguez, Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal and an intensive film- financing conference. And while talking about the LAFF, The Hollywood Reporter mentions Ambulante, a travelling documentary film festival that was founded by Diego and Gael. From the article:For the fourth year, LAFF will be based in Westwood Village, where it will unspool a program of about 70 features, 70 shorts and 50 music videos from 30 countries around the world. New features to the fest include programming highlights like Spotlight on Ambulante Film Festival: Filmmaking Without Borders, a new sidebar with selections from the Mexican documentary film festival founded by Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, and the panel discussion Post-Gay Hollywood?: Straight Talk About Gay Movies. The latter might seem like a symbolic show of support to those put off by the Raddon/Prop. 8 controversy, but festival officials insist it's not the case. But, wait, there’s more from LAFF!
The last mention is from a blog hosted by FilmMaker Magazine. From the blog: This year’s LAFF offers plenty of newer, more intriguing works as well, including the Narrative and Documentary Features Competitions, a spotlight on the innovative independent Mexican festival Ambulante (championed by Mexican stars Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, both of whom will appear at the festival) .

| Mod post: Google! |
[16 Jun 2009|11:53pm] |
I just wanted to mention that although the community doesn’t pop up on a general Google search, the community keeps turning up in Google Alerts – especially those set for blogs or to include blogs.
The community turns up a lot when there’s news posted but also when almost anything else is posted in the community like discussion posts, graphics and even when we had graphic challenges? They’d turn up too! It’s been happening for quite a few months and, when I had my alerts set only to once-a-day for news about Diego, the community would pop up quite frequently!
So, I just wanted to pass along my congrats to the community for doing so well!

| News: Camila's family speaks out. |
[15 Jun 2009|05:58pm] |
Laura Zapata, Camila Sodi’s aunt (and if not knowing who Camila Sodi is, she’s Diego’s wife who he married in February), has spoken out about Diego’s (supposed) fooling around (it’s all those stories where he’s been seen with a couple different women and being intimate with them in public venues).
Latin Gossip says that Laura spoke on camera with NXlusiva, reaching out to Camila: “Camila, sweetheart, if you are watching this, the only thing I want to tell you is not to suffer and don’t allow anyone to break your heart.”
Guanabee weighed in as well and backed up Latin Gossip, stating Laura had said the same thing, although without the quote. Lossip includes the quote in its original Spanish.
However, she’s not the only member of Camila’s family speaking out. Another aunt of Camila, singer and actress Thalía, has also spoken out. According to Quien, Thalía has said Camila and Diego are happy*; this is also mentioned in El Porvenir.*
Mega TV, at MySpace Music Video, posted a video entitled ‘Papaazzi 06 10 2009 Diego Luna’. It’s in Spanish but I think I heard Laura Zapata being mentioned (I admit to being distracted). Video’s also under the below LJ cut. ( Video regarding Diego from June 10 2009. )
* Articles in original Spanish.

| News: Diego, the paparazzi & Mexico lives. |
[03 Jun 2009|12:12am] |
Everyone’s heard of the swine flu epidemic that began in Mexico? A state in eastern Mexico will be erecting a statue of a boy thought to be Patient Zero. The article, from The Electric New Paper, Singapore, also goes on to mention how Mexico’s tourist industry is on the ropes and the Mexican government has begun an advertising campaign using Latino celebrities to try and lure back tourists. In fact, the Mexican government began a more conventional promotional campaign on Monday, using Latino celebrities like the actor Diego Luna, the tenor Placido Domingo and the soccer star Rafael Marquez to try to lure back tourists.
Its slogan is 'Mexico Lives.' A Statue of Me?, The Electric New Paper, Singapore
The Malaysia Sun is also carrying an article about celebrities in the Mexican government advertising campaign to bring tourists back to Mexico. It mentions the cost of the campaign as being $90 million and mentions the above celebrities as being part of the campaign.
For those who may not have known, Diego was seen in a bar with another woman until the early morning hours. This time, he’s back in the newspapers again for two different reasons: he’s been getting chummy with another woman at a soccer match in Mexico and he’s saying that the paparazzi needs to face legal consequences for their actions (this story is also at the Huffington Post). From the AP article: Mexican actor Diego Luna wants the paparazzi to face legal penalties for meddling in the private lives of celebrities.
The actor has been hounded by photographers trying to capture images of his daily life since his son was born in August. Mexican magazines have recently published photos of Luna at a bar with a fellow actress and dancing with an unknown woman under scandalous headlines. Diego Luna wants paparazzi to face legal penalties, Associated Press.
And at Minnesota Public Radio, there was an interview with Carlos Cuarón, director of Rudo y Cursi. From the interview: Bernal and Luna loved the new plot line. They even decided who would play which role.
"Gael said, 'No, I must be Rudo,' and Diego said, 'Yeah I should be Cursi.'" Cuaron said. "But I told them I didn't want to make 'Y Tu Mama Tambien II,' that I wanted to make something completely new and original, that I wanted to start from scratch and the way of doing that was to cast them against their types." Mexican director explores sibling rivalry, Euan Kerr
There’s also a mention of Diego, with Gael, at Twin Cities: Daily Planet in another interview with Carlos: Carlos: The reason I ask is that it’s a very specific, Mexican story—but of course it has universal themes in there as well. How were you able to get Diego [Luna] and Gael [Garcia Bernal] back together for these roles? Well, I actually wrote the script for them. The original idea was to make a fake documentary about a soccer player from a humble background who made it big and right at the peak of his success he disappeared. I told Gael and Diego separately about this idea, and they both said they want to be that guy. So I had two actors, one character. And I realized at that moment that I wanted to work with both of them so I made up a brother. I told them. They loved the idea. But Gael said “I have to be Rudo” and Diego said “and I have to Cursi.” And I told them, no, I don’t want to make Y tu mamá tambien 2. I want to start from scratch; make something original. And the way of doing that was casting them against their types. They got it, and immediately started throwing out ideas. Brotherly love: A conversation with "Rudo y Cursi" director Carlos Cuarón, Erik McClanahan
