About:THE MISSION OF DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE:

"Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. We focus our programs on what scientists consider two of the most serious environmental threats to the planet: the accelerating rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction. Long known for our leadership on endangered species issues, Defenders of Wildlife also advocates new approaches to wildlife conservation that will help keep species from becoming endangered. Our programs encourage protection of entire ecosystems and interconnected habitats while protecting predators that serve as indicator species for ecosystem health."

At the moment, there aren't many rules for this community. It is a moderated community, so offensive posts will be deleted, and offensive comments left in entries will be deleted. While there is open membership and all members may post, I screen all entries posted, so if it doesn't post immediately - don't worry - it will eventually get posted, unless it is deemed offensive or has nothing to do with the environment or animal rights! Offensive = personal attacks against a poster/commenter. If pictures are posted of a graphic nature, please put them behind an LJ-Cut and PLEASE warn people of the content either in the subject line of the entry or in the LJ-Cut title. The organization Defenders of Wildlife is an environmental activist organization, and any and all fundraising done for the organization is done at their website. No one should ask for donations personally in their entries, though you may choose to do so when visiting the sites that are linked to articles. If you choose to donate to any websites listed herein, this community and it's moderator cannot be held accountable for your actions. So please be sure that if you donate money that you are donating to a genuine, well established charity. This community is here mainly as an area for discussion about the organization and environmental issues that are of interest. Posting links to petitions and to government offices with the intent of contacting such officials about concerns are fine. Introductory posts are welcome, but spamming is not. Also, you are welcome to post invitations to join other communities on the condition that they have something to do with the environment and wildlife.

For more information about Defenders of Wildlife, please go to the organization's website! (www.defenders.org) There you can become a member, make donations if you so choose, and read up on all the things going on within the organization. The moderator of this community is a member of the organization, but has no other ties with the people who run the organization or their website. I created this community as a place to discuss issues of the day, as well as get the word out about this great organization.

*****This is a new community so spread the word, and don't be shy about joining!*****

As a side note: Because this community deals with environmental causes as well as animal rights/advocacy, members are welcome to make posts from other organizations with similar causes. So far, articles have been posted from Defenders of Wildlife website, the Humane Society of the United States, Union of Concerned Scientists: FEED (Food and Environment Electronic Digest), ASPCA, as well as the NRDC. As more organizations are listed in entries, this list will expand. If you have any suggestions for more information to be added here to the "interests" section or the user information section, please let me know via making an entry. Thank you!
