| Location: | Cicada's come here every 17 years, United States | |
| About: | The Genus Magicicada are what comes to Maryland. The genus Magicicada contains the periodical cicadas, known for their 17- or 13-year synchronized life cycles and dense choruses. These cicadas have striking black bodies, red eyes, and red wing veins. Six species are described from this group, but only one is known to exist in Michigan. Males and females join dense aggregations, or leks, where the males search for the stationary females using short flights and calls. Cicadas are flying, plant-sucking insects of the Order Hemiptera; their closest relatives are leafhoppers, treehoppers, and fulgoroids. Adult cicadas tend to be large (most are 25-50mm), with prominent wide-set eyes, short antennae, and clear wings held roof-like over the abdomen. Cicadas are probably best known for their conspicuous acoustic signals or "songs", which the males make using specialized structures called tymbals, found on the abdomen. CICADAS LOOK LIKE FLYING COCKROACHES!!! I HATE THEM!! - My mother. In order to be a part of this community you have to fill out this: 1.) Do you own a cicada? Or If you did, What would name your Cicada? 2.) What color do you like your cicada? 3.) Do you live near trees? 4.) Aren't Cicada's cool? 5.) Are you prepared for when they come? 6.) Do you have a backup generator in case they chew the electrical plugs? 7.) Do you wear gloves? 8.) Have you lived for 17 years? And post a picture of a Cicada. ..If you dont feel like doing this..dont. To report a Cicada Emergency Click Here http://www.msj.edu/cicada/report.html Interesting Questions: What do adult cicadas eat? --Adult cicadas do not eat solid food, but they probably do drink fluids to avoid dehydration. (THEY DO NOT EAT PEOPLE) Are cicadas harmful or dangerous? --Cicadas do not sting or bite humans, and they do not carry diseases, but they can harm young trees when female cicadas lay their eggs in the tree's new growth. (For all you idiots who think cicada's bite you) MAY 17!!!!!!! Your moderators are: AAHHAHAHAHAH CICADAS CAN HAVE THIER OWN KIND OF AIDS/STDS BAAHHAAHA Magicicada do not have any specialized predators, but periodical cicadas are subject to infection by the specialized fungal parasite Massospora cicadina Peck. During an emergence of periodical cicadas, both sexual and asexual forms of the fungus are present. Cicadas infected early in the emergence develop asexual spores, which become evident as the rear of the infected individual's abdomen breaks off, exposing a white, chalky mass of spores. This infection sterilizes the cicada but does not kill it immediately. These spores spread among the population, infecting other cicadas who will develop a secondary infection and whose abdomens will later break open, releasing sexual resting spores to infect the next generation of cicadas. AND POST PICTURES OF CICADAS!!!! WE WANT TO COMMENT THEM ON HOW HOT..I MEAN COOL THEY ARE!!!! | |
