I keep on thinking about how much I'd like to go to Abbey Road and see if you can really feel the "Beatles spirit" there, as some people claim. And over that I remembered that I've actually got my own encounter with the Beatles spirit. Listen to this capturing tale.
A couple of years ago there was an exhibition about the Hamburg music scene in the sixties, when The Beatles were here. Which I'm still insanely proud of. My beautiful city, all Beatled up.
I was looking at Stu Sutcliffe's paintings. They had this whole thing set up in one corner, the paintings on easels and old paintbrushes and crumbly tin tubes of oil paint scattered around them. And I felt it, there. It was like having goosebumps without physically having the goosebumps. Eerie but somehow comforting. There was something.
They also had handwritten letters from George to Astrid about some photos when he was about eighteen or something, which are adorable.
Oh, you boys, I'll never get over you.

How adorable was Stephen on Buzzcocks? Calling everyone dear and darling.
I didn't know any of the others, though. The blond guy was very funny. The comedienne next to Stephen looked intriguingly normal. She was sweet. The S Club Junior lass was a bit of an airhead. I couldn't stop thinking about this everytime she was on the screen.
S Club: "Oh, are you the boyfriend?"
Phill: "NO. HE WAS MERYL STREEP."
Simon: "Don't mock our intellectual Greek love!"
Josie: "I would put everything I have on number three. I mean that in several ways."
S Club: "What part of the song is that?"
Phill: "The one with the WORDS IN IT."

i used to listen to this song in our house in highlands. the best place i've ever lived.
when no one else was home, hot summer day, cool inside our house with no lights on. living room next to the kitchen. scratchy cool-against-the-air carpet under my bare feet. take off the talking heads' 'more songs about buildings and food' or ziggy stardust and place this album on the turntable. the few seconds of pseudo-silence as the record needle winds its way around the grooves. the non- hi-fi sound of the speakers and the record crackles on top of the saxophone in the opening. breeze comes in off of the water and through the side windows and in through the screened front porch (past the ruminating wine collecting bugs in its glasses and the over-stuffed ashtrays and past the second hand wicker furniture on the screened front porch (which no longer exists - the porch, i mean)) and through the open front door.

ed. note 1.: my mouth seems to be doing the same thing in both photos. the first is supposed to be silly. the second is a young shy me, on alterating substances. in real life, this is not the truth.
ed. note 2.: the little red stool to the right of my legs/feet is mine from when i was very little. it says in white lettering on the top "stand up to be tall, sit down to be small."

I saw this great movie tonight called "Good Dick", the woman who stars in it --Mariana Palik also wrote and directed it, and she's only a year older than me.
It turned out the screening was only for NYU students and alum (the movie is officially released tomorrow) but I convinced a woman who I was talking to in line to tell security I was her guest. I suppose I can actually be charming now and then. The film is about a woman who was abused by her father and as a result is disconnected from the world and is unable to have sexual relationships with others so she sits at home all day watching pornos by herself until the video clerk more or less rescues her.
Afterwards the director took questions and I asked why she chose such a misleading and provacative title and her costar Jason Ritter said that Good Dick was supposed to mean whatever it is in actuality that you really need to be okay.
